Rex loans, the auctioneer, was over from Plattsmouth last Saturday to conduct the sale of A. II. Kate's household goods. Mr. Race will leave for California soon. N. D. Bothwell was in Lincoln last Tuesday, where he went to se cure a truck load of grocseries for t lie store and also to look after some business matters while there. A dainty little blue eyed baby girl came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Brackhage Tuesday of last week to gladden their home. Moth er and little one doing nicely. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Tyson were pleased when their son. Dr. R. W. Tyson and wife with their little daughter came for a visit last Sun day. All enjoyed the day most pleasantly. Mr. and Mrs. Winkler, who have been making their home on the farm of his sister in the country, are moving to Klmwood, where they will occupy the home of the late Grand mother Listen. With a good wheat crop and the bright prospects for a bumper corn crop, a number of farmers and oth ers are buying cars. One local deal er reports the sale of three new cars during the past week. Emily Gonzales recently purchas ed the Mrs. Wilcoxson home which is directly across the street from the Christian church. This property was built by Dr. W. A. Alton many years ago and is one of the choice proper ties of the town. Henry Monning departed for the western portion of the state, where he will look after some business matters and will be employed at his trade of builder for a limited time, at Scottsbluff, where there is consid erable building activity under way just now. Mr. and Mrs. William Fleischman were over to Lincoln last Tuesday, where they were looking after some business matters and bringing home supplies for the cafe home with them. They will be host and hostess to Mr. and Mrs. Max Fisher, of Santa Monica, California, who are cousins, for the coming two weeks. L. F. Langhorst, who is superin tendent of the vftrious ports of entry into .Nebraska, having a total of some thirty of these ports at differ ent Nebraska cities, was at lilair, South Sioux City and Yankton, South Dakota, looking after business for the state. Mr. Langhorst has not been feeling the best of late, having a touch of lumbago. Alfred II Race, who has made his home in Elmwood for some time, held a sale last Saturday at which he disposed of his household goods and w ill leave 'the latter part of the week for California, where he e pects to make his home. Turner and wife and daughter were guests last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. N. I). Bothwell and Jean Adair, as well as Grandfather Oscar Turn er. They tame especially to visit with Mrs. Bothwell, who has been kept to her home for several weeks with an illness caused by an attack of flu some time since. Mrs. Both well is now much better but has not regained sufficient strength to re turn to work at the store. To Reside in Kansas City Mrs. Joseph Douglas, widow of the late Judge Douglas, who has been making her home in Lincoln, moved to Kansas City recently and will reside there in the future. She was accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Sever. Her son, Dean Doug las, who is connected with the Ne braska Highway department, will re main in Lincoln. Surprised on Her Birthday Mrs. George L. Brinton was pass ing her birthday anniversary last Sunday and was surprised when her mother and a group of other rela tives from Avoca and Weeping Water came to help her celebrate the occa sion. Heme from the West Albert Kuntz, daughter Miss De loris and niece, Miss Marjorie Kuntz. who have been visiting at Imperial during the past ten days, returned home last Monday and report the country rather dry out that way. The wheat yield was fair, but pros pects for a corn crop are pretty slim. Miss Amy Hoffman Better Miss Amy Hoffman, who has been at the hospital in Omaha for some time, undergoing an operation and receiving treatment since, is report ed getting along very nicely and is hopeful of being able to return home ii- the very near future. She is a sister of Frank Hoffman. Visited Parents in Kansas Russell Reedcr and wife, who have been spending the summer va ration season in Elmwood with- the parents -of Mrs. Reeder, visited last week at the home of Mr. Reeder 's parents at Bolin City, Kansas. They will return to Plattsmouth in the near future to get ready for the opening of the public schools there early in September. Mr. Reed-j er is high school principal. Methodists Hold Conference I The third quarterly conference of the Klmwood Methodist church was held last Saturday and Sunday. Re ports from the various auxiliaries of the church showed all are working together in harmony for the common cause. Reports were rendered for the Ep worth League, the Bible school and the Ladies Aid society. This or ganization has been very active and recently ins-.alled an eight hole gas range in the kitchen of the church, which is of ample size to care for all the functions which the church may be called upsn to serve from time to time. Jr., will occupy the residence of Mrs. Rohlmann, which has been unoccupied for some time. Sam Thimgan, of Elmwood was visiting friends in Avoca for a short time on Tuesday afternoon of last w eek. t, Mrs. Rertha Kuntz and family were in Elmwood last Sunday, where they were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George L.. Brinton. Miss Helen Mefzger, a former teacher in the Avoca schools, who resides near Wyoming in Otoe coun ty, visited friends here a short time last week. Mrs. Rachel Everett and son Silas and daughter Clara and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Tyrrell were visiting at the home of Mr. and' Mrs. George Li. Brinton at Elmwood last Sunday. Dick Xeumeister has been feeling quite poorly but has stuck tenacious ly to his work, not wishing to give up. but finding the 'going pretty tough, nevertheless. He is somewhat improved now. Herman Sudman, of Lincoln, was a visitor in Avoca Tuesday of last week, meeting many of his friends while here and also looking after business matters. Mr. and Mrs. George Shackley and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Morley and daughter Mueller, were guests last Sunday at the home of the mother of Mr. Shackley at Xorthboro, la., where they enjoyed a most pleasant day. Dr. J. W. Rrendel was called to Plattsmouth Tuesday of last week, where he had some work to do as County Physician regarding the en forcement of the health laws of the state, which is a part of the duties of his office. Frank Jones, of Lincoln, was here last week visiting the. Betts broth ers and when he departed was ac companied by Frank Betts, whom Mr. Jones was taking along with him, as he was Utking a vacation trip to the mountains of Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. George Shackley have received a letter from friends at Houston, Texas, with whom they spent a portion of the winter, ex tending them an invitation to come down again this winter and enjoy the mild climate of the southland. William Maseman and wife wero in Nebraska City last Sunday. Ac companying them were a number of Avoca boys, who enjoyed a swim in the pool at Graham Mill, and in the evening attended a show at the Over land theatre. Needless to say, they all enjoyed a good time. George Shackley, the painter, waar to have painted the Conant Wolph home during the past week but when he went out to see about beginning the work, Mr. Wolph advisedhim he needed a hay rack more than he needed the house painted just now. and so Mr. Shackley returned to the lumber yard and built the new hay rack so the threshing could proceed without interruption or inconveni ence. Painting the house comes later. J. H. V. Ruhge, the merchant, who has been making some exten sive repairs on the home, has just concluded the same with the paint ing and decorating of the porch. A cement floor on the porch and the cement walk leading to the street, insure permanence. Indian designs in the porch floor make it very strik'ng and a sunburst in the con crete walk also makes a tasty and pleasing design. Seady for Opening of School The Avoca consolidated school will open Monday, August 30th, with an enrollment of about 100 pupils who are expected by then to be ready to I V "resume their studies and carry thru the coming year in fine manner. Fishing in the North Mrs. Emma Rawalt and son, Verne Itawalt departed Tuesday morning in their car for the northern portion of Minnesota, where they will put in several days, avoiding the heat wave that has been bearing down on this part of the country just now. They expected to find not only cool temperatures but a few days of very fine fishing and a general recreation period. They started out at four in the morning, hoping to avoid as much of the ntid-days heat as possible. Mrs. Bohlman, of Otoe, visited in Avoca the fore part of last week. During her stay she was busy as sisting her sister, Mrs. Anna Meyers, with the setting of her house in or der as well as looking after her own. Mrs. Meyers has been consid ering moving to Lincoln to reside, but taking into account the expense necessary and ,the fact that her daughter Clara has been in the hos pital, has decided to remain here Married atSeward in July According to a clipping from a paper published at Seward, the wed ding of Edward Shackley and Mrs. Myrtle Clarke of that place on July 17, which, by the way, was also the birthday anniversary of George Shackley, brother of Ed, who was just turning his 67th year. The bride is a very accomplished oung woman and the groom is one o: the staid citizens of Avoca. Friends of the groom have been extending congratulations and best wishes to the newlyweds. Church is He-Dedicated Last Sunday the Congregational church in Avoca1 which was recent ly purchased Irv the local congrega tion of that faith from the Nebraska Missionary Society, was re-dedicated to the continued worship of Almighty God. Rev. Tyler of Lincoln, secre tary of the Nebraska Congregational association, was the principal speak er for this occasion, which was par ticipated in by almost the entire membership of the church. Negotiations for the purchase of the building were carried on for a long time before the sale was con cluded and now several months have elapsed before the re-dedication. Mi I UMb AT THE LITTLE BRICK SCHOOL This particular school is situated now about a mile and a half west of Mynard, ajid in the winter of 1SC9 1S70 was taught by Charles D. Handy, although butfev now would remember the school days of the lads and lasses who then attended this particular country school. But Charles I. Long of Murdock, son of Abraham Long, one of the scholars in that school, found among his papers three reports issued to Abraham Long, rather, Silas Long, uncle and Willie Long, another uncle of Charles which showed the studies and percent of these three lads, near seventy years ago. Abraham and Willie Long have long since passed and Silas Long is now past S3 years of age, and makes his home at Ve-Ro Beach, Florida. Mr. Charles I. Long was kind enough to furnish us a copy of the reports of these school boys, which follow. Many people in Cass county will re member them.
