Edward Farriott, of Elmwood was a visitor in Murdock last "Wednes day, coming over to see his sister. Henry Meierjurgen was called to Plattsmouth one day last week, go ing over in his car to look after business matters. Henry Amgwert and wife were in Lincoln last Wednesday, where they looked after the purchase of goods for the store here. Fred Towle and wife of Wabash were among those attending the fun eral of Mrs. Hattie Miller here last Wednesday afternoon. The Misses Loretta and Rose Shee han. of Manley, were in Murdock Wednesday having some beauty work done by Miss Orland Parriott. Charles Schaefer, representative of the Trunkenbolz Oil company in this territory was making delivery of gas and oil to patrons at Elmwood last Thursday. The funeral of Mrs. Hattie Mills was attended by a large number of friend3 from far and near. Some lelatives came from Wyoming last Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Craig and Miss Orland Farriott, the beautician in the Craig barber shop, were in Lincoln last Wednesday evening on business matters. Mrs. Emily Gonzales, of Elmwood. where she is employed in the Amer ican Exchange Bank, was in Mur dock last Wednesday to attend the funeral of the late Mrs. Hattie Mills. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. McDonald and the children visited in riattsmouth last Sunday, being guests at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Thim gan and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Thim gan. L. Neitzel delivered an address in the local church last Sunday even ing on the theme. "Why the Cross," fitting into the Lenten program of the church conducted by Rev. II. A. Si hwab. Dan Schoeman, who resides near Louisville, was looking after busi ness matters in Murdock Wednes day afternoon. He also made a trip to Omaha on business during the past week. , Rev. and Mrs. C. Jannan, of Elm wood, where Mr. Jannan is pastor of the Evangelical church, visited at the home of their daughter and hus band, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Amgwert, lore on last Wednesday afternoon. L. Xeitzel and Mrs. J. J. Arnold motored to Havelock last Sunday morning to be dinner guests at the O. J. Hitchcock home. A very pleas ant visit was had in the afternoon, and a visit to Morrill Hall closed the day. E. D. Friend, who has been mak ing his home with his daughter, Mrs. Eddu Craig and husband, since the death of his wife several months ago, last week moved back to the home place north of Alvo, where he will reside. It was the privilege of L. Neitzel to address and teach the Adult de partment in the- M. E. church of Havelock, last Sunday, Mrs. O. J. Hitchcock, their regular teacher, be ing indisposed. A very profitable ses sion was held and a return date was asked and promised. Homer Lawton visited his mother in Wabash Wednesday of last week, assisting with the task of getting things about the home in running cider again, as the mother ha'l been visiting in Aurora during tii . win ter, at the home of a daughter. , Gottlieb Baur returned home last Thursday alter spending a few days with his brother Charles and family at Cambridge, Nebraska. Recently his brother from the west visited in Murdock a few days, so Mr. Eaur re turned home with him. He came back in a car driven by a salesman. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Oehlerking was quarantined for scarlet fever last week. Alvin wis quite ill for a few days with the fever. It is hoped that no other rases break out in the community. Nebraska, moved March S onto the farm northwest of town which was occupied by George Lewis last year. The farm was purchased some time ago by Ferdinand Matzke. father of Wesley. The young couple were married early this month and are starting out on their journey through life as tillers of the soil. Mrs. Matzke is a sister of Mrs. Hugo Norenberg, who formerly lived in this community. Chased by Infuriated Bull Eddie Craig was advised during I the past week of a serious accident that occurred while his brother, Curtis Craig was working about the barnyard at his home near Beatrice. An enraged bull charged him and before Mr. Craig could get to a place of safety the infuriated animal had gored him. Being unable to go to see his brother. Eddie called up to ascertain how serious his injuries ;;iight be and was pleased to learn that he is getting along very well, although he was severely injured. Thimgan was called to Lincoln to look after business matters, he was accompanied by Mrs. Thimgan and their little so. Larry, who visited with Mrs. Bryan McDon ald, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thim gan, enjoying the day very pleasant ly. On his return late that after noon, Mr. Thimgan picked her up and they returned to their home in Plattsmouth. 4-H Club Meets The 4-H club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lau on March ?rd, enjoying both the study period and the sociable hour that followed. The lesson subject was "Satisfying Meals." There were 14 members and three visitors present. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cordes on April 7th. Mrs. Herman Gakemeier, v.-ho is news reporter for the club, reports a great deal of interest in the work among the members. They are plan ning on broadcasting a program over station KFOR in the near future. Purchased Bank Property Richard E. The building is much better arranged for the con duct of a banking business and will make a satisfactory place for the Co operative Association to carry on its business , Having Home Improved Mrs. Fred Stock, Sr., for whom her son Paul Stock recently pur chased the property that was tem porarily owned by Elmer Schliefert, to become a home for the mother, is having the exterior and interior re painted and decorated, the work be ing done by Mrs. Williams, cf Alvo. As soon a3 the work is completed, Mrs. Stock will move to Murdock to make her home. Harry Stock will occupy the farm. Getting; Building in Shape F. A. Melvin and Gilbert Carson have been busy altering the oil Farmers Union building, which is to be used as a storage place for the implements which they are handling. The company is doing a very good business, with Paul Stock in the field as salesman and have disposed of a good number of farm tractors this spring, as well as other machinery. Obituary of Mrs. Hattie It. Mills Mis. Hattie Rowena Mills, nee Mayberry, who was born in Casco Village, Maine, May 10, 1SC0, de parted this life at 5:00 a. ni. March 15, 1937, in her country home north west of Murdock. Elementary educational opportuni ties were given to her as a child Inck in her native state. She grew into young womanhood there and met many problems of her youth in a courageous manner. She carried some of these early cares with her westward as she settled in Cass county, near Murdock, about fifty years ago. December 31, 1S94, she married George A. Mills, who had already be come a pioneer settler in this com munity. They lived together on the home place near the village of Mur dock about 42 years when her hus band, Mr. Mills, was taken by death, November C, 1036. This union shared the happy ex perience of a son, James Forrest, who survives his parents today. Besides her son James F. Mills, she has left another son, Edward Jumper, from a former marriage, who resides at Ashland. Samuel Jumper preceded his mother in death several decades ago. One sister, Mrs. Abbie Edwards, resides in Poland, Maine. Six grandchildren also sur vive the departed, as follows: Ilar riette and Edward Juniper, Jr., and James, Stewart, Margaret and Frank lin Mills. Many loyal friends wiir long remember Mrs. Mills as a quiet, unassuming and kfnd neighbor and friend. The departed was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge at Elmwood and a charter member of the Murdock chapter of the Royal Neighbors of America. Mrs. Mills became ill February Community Sales Prove a Drawing Card Over 800 at Sale Thursday at Pavilion North of This City on High way No. 75. The community salea which are being held at the pavilion at the farm of Karl Grosshans, two miles north of this city on highway No. 75, are growing in popularity and in fact outgrowing the present quarters. Thursday afternoon at the sale there were over S00 persons'in at tendance and a large number of these from distant points, some from Ord, Nebraska, Malvern, and Red Oak. Iowa, and other points in southeast Nebraska and western Iowa. The crowd could not all be accommodated in the building. The bidding was brisk and the prices that were offered were excel lent and proved very satisfactory to the sellers as well as the buyers of the live stock, machinery and other articles offered. Some excellent live stock was brought to the sale from various points in Cass county and the de mand was brisk as Rex Young, the veteran auctioneer, conducted the sale. These sales are under the manage ment of Karl Grosshans, who has for the past two years held sales at his farm near La Platte and this year moved to this side of the Platte river. W. E. Reynolds, of Union, is clerk of the sales and he has a real job in handling the various items that are to be sold and in which several par ties are usually interested, doing a nice piece of work and keeping the sale going in great shape. 7, 19117. She experienced great pain during this her brief illness and was compelled to remain in bed prac tically all of the time. Almost fum the beginning of her illness, she had expressed the belief that it would be her last. Kind hands did all that could be done for her. Gradually they saw the once robust life grow weaker until her sojourn ceased at the age of 70 years. 10 months and b days. Those who knew her best, testify to her constant interest and thoughts in behalf of her grandchildren. It was her constant wish that they should be regular attendants of the Sunday school. She harbored good will and kind thoughts for all her h.ved ones and many friends. Memory of her life among us as a kindly citizen, a peaceful neighbor and li good mother will abide for many a day. Funeral services were conducted by the II v. Harvey A. Schwab, at the Murdock Evangelical church on Wednesday, March 17, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Miss Mabel Van Burg, Mrs. Edna Eikli and Mrs. Emma Ward assisted with special hymns..,. . The local chapter of the Royal Neighbors of America were present in a body and formed the lodge "avenue" at the church and the cemetery. The pall bearers were Fred Dwell, Charles Buell, Daniel Schlaphof, Wil liam Lau, Alvin Neitzel and Gust Gakemeier. Interment took place in the Wa bash cemetery. Card of Thanks The sons and lelatives of Mrs. Hattie R. Mills desire to express their sincere gratitude to their many loyal friends and neighbors for the beautiful floral tributes, warm words of comfort, the helpful music, spec ial hymns and other kindnesses which were extended so generously during the recent illness and depar ture of their mother and grandmoth er. G, Johnson was held on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Sattler funeral home, a large number from this city as well as the community where Mr. John son had resided, being present. Dr. II. G. McClusky, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, had charge of the services and paid tri bute to the long and useful life of Mr. Johnson in the community. The Masonic quartet, composed of Frank A. Cloidt, Raymond Cook, H. G. McClusky and Dr. R. P. Westover, sang "Still, Still With Thee," at the service, E. II. Wescott being the ac companist. The escort was provided by mem bers of Mt. Zion commandery No. 5, Knights Templar. The service at the grave in Oak Hill cemetery was conducted by Plattsmouth lodge No. G, A. F. & A. M., William F.
