A. Steinauer farm a half mile east of Steinauer. Conservation of all the 14 inches of rain that fell last spring after the ridges were con structed is believed largely respon sible for return of the bluestems, side oat; grama and blue grama. Restrict ed grazing and weed control on the pasture have also helped. The pas ture was mowed in June to destroy moisture wasting weeds. With ten miles of contour ridges located from 15 to 25 feet apart on the 60-acre pasture, Steinauer says the ridges caused but little incon venience in -mowing the weeds .He ran the mower parallel with the ridges. All pasture ridges on the farm were constructed with a 10-foot blade pulled by a tractor, the cuts and the ridges each being 4Y2 feet in width. The cuts were blocked at 100-foot in tervals to keep the water from con centrating at any one point and caus ing overtopping during a downpour. To control erosion on his pasture land, Steinauer has fenced all badly gullied areas and planted them to trees and shrubs. Last spring 5,700 trees and 2.300 shrubs were planted on the 60-acre contour ridged pasture. WANTS LEGISLATIVE PROBE Omaha. Ernest Jacobberger, chairman of the Douglas county board of commissioners, said he will ask a legislative investigation of re lief spending in the county by the former Douglas county relief admin istration. He then instructed E. F. Magaret, director of county relief, to begin taking affidavits for use in connec tion with the investigation. The Douglas county relief administration, which went out of existence last spring, functioned as a combined county, str.te and federal organiz ation. Magaret made a statement Tuesday, charging the former DCRA with "reckUss squandering of money." Soon after Magaret began an in vestigation to trace missing office equipment he says was used by the DCRA and which he values at $20. 000. He obtained permission from the city commissioners to engage a pri vate detective for one month. Norman Durfee, in charge of the federal emergency relief administra tion office at Lincoln, said the equip ment formerly used by the DCRA is now in use at FERA offices in Doug las county.
