PLATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOURNAL MONDAY, ' AUGUST 31 1833. PAGE FOUR c i c c I ( I I ? ) 6 AVOCA NEWS Fred Cisco was filling his pit silo last Tuesday. Harrt Stutt, the insurance man, is driving a new Quick car in the pursuit of his business. J. II. F. Ruge and wife and Roy Ruhge and wife were visiting with relatives at Talmage last Sunday. Claude and George Druham look ed after business matters in Lincoln last Tuesday, driving over in their car. William Patterson, of Murray, was a guest of friends in Avoca and also looked after business matters here last Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Kokjer and son, Jordan, were in Omaha last Sunday, where they were guests at the home of Miss Helen Allis, a friend of Jordon Kokjer. Herman Cose, who has found his well slowly receding in its water supply, has been forced to dig a new well to supply water for his stock. Many of the farmers are finding the water supply limited as well as the pasturage. Clyde Bogaard, barber at Otoe, was called to Elmwood to work Tuesday and Wednesday in shop of George Eidemiller, during the time of the death and funeral of the late Wil liam J. Hayes, father of Mrs. Eide miller. The funeral was held Wed nesday of last week. James Johnson, in order to secure and keep an adequate supply of water, and especially to conserve the supply during seasons like the pres ent, is having a large cistern con structed at the home. The work is being done by George Shackley and Charles Farmenter. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Ehlers, of Bertrand, where Stuart Maseman has been staying during the summer, ar rived in Avoca early last week and visited with friends for a few days. They were also present at the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Kokjer. Promise of Fair Corn Crop Henry, John, Elbert and Raymond Koester, of Cisney Park, Illinois, cousins of Alber Koester, who was married last Wednesday at the North Branch church, arrived in Avoca last Tuesday, having driven all the way from their home town in the one day. They report conditions dry in Illi nois, but say there will be a fair yield of corn. That planted on spring plowed land will yield about 25 bush els to the acre, while corn raised on fall plowed land is expected to make close to forty bushels. Certainty a lot better than here, where the corn stalks are being cut into ensilage. Accepts Position with Journal Miss Hazel Baier, who is a gradu ate of the University of Nebraska school of Journalism, has accepted a position with the editorial depart ment of the Plattsmouth Journal, doing city reporting for the daily edition of the paper. She began work last Monday. Celebrated Passing Event August 30, 1911 just 25 years ago Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Kokjer were united in marriage at the home where they now reside. As a fitting ceremonial, they enjoyed a reception from their friends, who called on them yesterday. Mrs. Kokjer was formerly Miss Julia M. Nutzmann. Many Digging Pit Silos The matter of preserving all the feed there is for winter use is re ceiving the careful attention of the farmers, who have resorted to the digging of inexpensive pit silos for the storing of their feed supply. The pit silo came into quite general use in Nebraska during the drouth of two years ago, and was found most satisfactory. This year hundreds of them are being dug all over the state. . Home from the West Stuart Maseman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Maseman, who has been staying on the farm of an uncle at Bertrand, Nebraska, since the clos ing of the school year last spring, re turned home Sunday to again enter school. He was met at Lincoln by his father, Henry Maseman. Not So Hot a Year Ago We have surely been having our share of hot weather and on Tuesday, tfhen the mercury climbed above the 100 mark, J. H. F. Rughe recalled that Mrs. Emma Rawalt began her school west of Avoca a week early last year, and en route home from the opening day stopped to get some groceries, while he had an oil stove going behind the counter to keep the place comfortable. Certainly a lot different than now. Green Pastures Not So Green Fred Marquardt was at Nebraska City and over into Iowa a few days Champion to Wed Charlotte Edwards Sc . . . .;' :.::-::-:::.:-.'.. i J I I w i t tf - - - oX x tN". Miss Charlotte Edwards, above, 21-year-old graduate of Colo rado State college; where the two met when they were in school. ago, making the trip to look after some cattle which he recently sent to the Iowa bottom lands for pas- tucrage. At that time the pastures there were still quite green, but now, with continued dry weather they too are getting plenty short and unless revived it will soon be necessary to make other arrangements for feed for his stock. Gave Reception to Son Feter Jorgensen and wife enter tained at their home in Avoca last Sunday. The occasion was a recep tion for their son, Louis Jorgensen and his bride of a few days. The couple was married at Shubert, where they have both been making their home. WIN FROM LOUISVILLE From Saturday's Dally: The baseball team of the local W.P.A. Recreation Center yesterday defeated Louisville by the score of 10-7. The visiting team was the same one that one week ago beat the locals 4-0. "Dusty" Rhoades, local twirler. was the most effective of the four pitchers who saw service, allowing but four hits and two runs while striking out 10 opponents in the seven innings he toiled. Hiner, who relieved him allowed but four hits, but numerous walks, followed by timely hits accounted for the runs. All locals played a fine game, field ing and batting well, especially L. Hiskett who hit safely four times out of five. CALLED ON H0LC0MBS While en route home from Michi gan this week, Robert Reed stopped for a brief visit with Garold Hol comb and family, at Kankakee, 111. He report "Hoke" as geting along fine in his position as manager of the water plant at Kankakee, and declares he has the best lawn he saw anywhere between here and Michigan. Garold admitted it took many thousands of gallons to water to keep it that way, for it has been dry in Illinois, too. But then, water doesn't mean anything to the mana ger of a waterworks system. Drought, grasshoppers, and day after day of scorching heat have nearly destroyed some of the spring's most promising yards and gardens. The Yard and Garden Contest has become a battle against the elements. Rather than attempt the raising of rare and delicate plants, a struggle has been made to keep only the most hardy alive. Two judgings have been made thus far. The third is scheduled for September. This rating will ter minate the contest. Judges will probably be selected from out of town. Rev. G. A. Pahl, Jr., chair man, announces that prizes will be awarded and the winner will enter the national contest during next month. Many surprises and difficulties may face the judges in determining the winners. Some of the most at tractive gardens and lawns in the city were the first to shrivel under the heat wave. At the beginning of the summer there were 150 contestants. The city was divided into five wards and a chairman appointed for each ward.
