An army pilot and his mechanic were killed when a new two-place pursuit plane from Self ridge Field, Mich., crashed near Ot sego while taking part in the west ern Michigan war games of the sec ond army. The plane was piloted by Second Lieut. William W. Harding, Los Angeles, 25. air corps reserve. His mechanic was Pvt. Francis Meier, of Dowagiac, Mich. The local tennis club, represent ed by Ray Larson and James Will, met and defeated Nebraska City, two matches to one. In a thrilling two set match Ray defeated Walter Rottman of Nebras ka City, C-4, 6-2. The match was closer than the score indicates, only Ray's experience and steady play, caused the match to swing in his favor. In the first set Rottman led 4-1, but Ray tame back to win five straight games. He had very little trouble in the second set. In the second singles Jim Will lost to Raymond Frericks, in an interest-j ing three set match, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4. This was a very nice match to watch Frerichs, dominated the play in the first set. Jim came back to win the second set, 7-5, Frerichs w inning the third set 6-4. The match rested on the winner of the doubles, and this was a ding dong affair. Larson and Will finally won C-l, C-S, S-6. After winning set aniece. Nebraska City took the lead 4-1, but Plattsmouth won three straight games. Nebraska City took the 9th game, Plattsmouth took games 10 and 11 and Nebraska City evened it up in a long deuce game, to make it six all. Ray and Jim play ed excellent tennis to take the thir teenth and fourteenth games and the match. In all probability Waverly will play here in the zone finals, Satur day afternoon, August 22nd at 3 o'clock. The message or me death was received here by E. H. Sciiulhof and sisters, Mrs. A. B. Smith and Miss Caroline Schulhof, uncle and aunts of the deceased. The mother of the deceased man was formerly Miss Henrietta Schul hof of this city and the family made their home here for several years before moving to Omaha to make their home. Paul Hebert was born in Omaha and has for a great many years been engaged in the printing trade and was employed as a lino type operator up to the time of his last illness. He is survived by his widow, Vera, five children, Jack, Bonnie, Betty, Billy and Sally, his mother and two sisters, Mrs. Jeanette Satrapa, Om aha, Mrs. Bernice Schrieber, Council Bluffs. 1 . The funeral will bo Thursday at 9 a. m. from the St. Bernard's church, Omaha. Ray Smith and son, Milford, of Weeping Water, were in the city Tuesday afternoon while en route home from Omaha where Mr. Smith had been given an examin ation at a hospital where for several weeks he was under treatment. Mr. Smith was taken to Omaha after he had been ill at home for a short time and his case has been unusual and for several weeks he was kept under constant care and finally recovered to the extent that he was allowed to return to his home. He has lost a great deal of weight and strength but is gradually gaining this back and the checkup at the hospital Tuesday showed that he was doing very well now and it Is hoped would soon be back in his old time health.
