Stradley was shelling corn for Ole Olsen and William Bolder Friday and Saturday of last week. Gust McNurlin was called to Lin coln on Thursday ot last week, where he had some business to look after, and also was visiting with friends as well. John Mick and Gerald Stewart have been busy with their paint ing contracts in Greenwood. They re port having considerable work ahead. Henry Wilkens and Harold Mason are working in Nebraska City, where they are painting the residence of Kay Frederick, the seed man, who formerly resided here. A slight blaze at the home of Rex Peters caused much excitement last Thursday. However, the fire depart ment was there in a short time and extinguished the fire. Mrs. Fred Etheredge was visiting with friends in Lincoln on Thurs day of last week, making the trip via the Burlington bus and return ing home in the evening. S. S. Tetersen, the blacksmith, has been enjoying a fine business of late and is kept on the go all the time from early morning till late at night, with everyone wanting their work out at once. Mr. and Mrs. Goodhard Vant were in Lincoln last Thursday, where they were looking after the settlement of the estate of the parents of Mrs. Vant who died a short time since and the probation of the estate is now in the courts. R. E. Mathews was over week end visitor near Torrington, Wyom ing, where -he went to look after some business matters, will remain in that country for a number of days, as his business there will take up considerable time yet. Walter E. Tailing, who has been making his home in Lincoln for some time past, was spending a few days with his friends, Fred Etheredge and wife, in Greenwood, and was also visiting with his many other friends here during the past week. John Downing has been having a new farm residence built at the farm two and a half miles southeast of town, which is now nearly completed and this along with many repair jobs now being done has kept Mr. Headley pretty busy at the lumber yard. The Ladies Card club of the Green wood General Kensington were en joying a meeting last Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Clymer, where the ladies enjoyed a one o'clock covered dish luncheon and a social hour with cards, preferably Five Hundred, and all enjoyed the afternoon most pleasantly. Building Trailer House Lawrence White, who i3 employed by the Burlington railroad to weld the battered ends of rails, and whose work carries him over much country, is having a trailer house made that he will attach to his auto and thus be able to take his home with him wherever he may go in the handling of his job. Frank Welton and Ed Montgomery are building the new trailer cabin. Preparing for Memorial Day The American Legion post of Greenwood, which is one of the most actfve Legion posts in the county, has begun making preparations for the observance of Memorial day. The graves of the soldier dead will be decorated and all honor be paid to the men who served in any of our country's wars. Part of the observ ance includes the firing of a military salute at the open air ceremony at the cemetery. William Ritchie, of Omaha, a former state Legion com mandcr, will be the speaker of the day. There are sixteen members in the gradua tion class. The baccalaureate services were held last Sunday evening at the parlors of the Christian church, the sermon being delivered by the Rev. Alexander, pastor of the Methodist church. A large and interested con gregation was on hand for this fea ture of the year-end exercises and the church building was crowded to capacity. Commencement exercises will be held Thursday evening, with Judge E. D. Perry, of Lincoln, as the speaker. The members of the class who are to graduate and will receive their diplomas are Llye Armstrong, Bur ton Blauvelt, Lewis Tyler, Julia Coleman, Aurel Cope, Marie Halke, Vernon Hurlbut, eHlen Kelley, Har ley Kirk, Alda Kyles, Roy Norton, Wayne Maroff, E. F. Rodgers, Doro thy Smith, Eddy Whitlach and Ralph Witt. Standpipe Looks Very Fine With the completion of the paint ing of the standpipe of the Green wood water plant, the tank can be seen from afar as the sunlight plays upon it and the black letters "Green wood" stand out, advertising the town to all who pas3 this way. The body of the truck is painted aluminum. Making Speedier Track A large force of workmen are en gaged in changing the location of the interlocking block signals here, which are operated from Ashland. The switches are being moved a block esst of their present location in order to lengthen the curve where the trains cut across the other tracks. As it has been in the past, east bound trains were able to hold up a speed of sixty miles an hour, but those going west have had to slacken their speed to around thirty in order to make the curve. When the change is made and the curve widened it will be possible to main tain a sixty mile speed in either di rection Junior-Senior Eanquet The members of the Junior and Senior classes of the Greenwood high schoolfi slipped away to Lincoln last Friday, where they enjoyed the fine banquet that the Juniors were giv ing the Seniors. Needless to say, the members of both classes enjoyed a very pleasant evening. Makes Great Improvement The Rearle-Chapin Lumber com pany, which is represented in Green wood by Dewey H. Headley, have completed changes in their building that will enable them to carry a stock of hardware. Since the clos ing of the hardware store of White & Bucknell, Mr. Headley has put in a small stock in order to accommo date those desiring rame. Now, with the changes in the building, he will be able to add considerable to his stock. His office is now located in the rear of the room, which makes it more convenient. The Burlington Zephyrs After a year or more of service be tween Lincoln and St. Joseph, Mis souri, the original Burlington Zephyr which made the round trip run prac tically every day, has been tempor arily withdrawn from service in ol der to have the coaches air condition ed throughout. In the meantime a fast steam drawn train is making the run. Two additional Zephyr trains are being constructed for service in Kai - pis -1936 U v the west and are being listed on the new time cards. Should completion of the two new trains be delayed be yond the anticipated time set for their completion steam trains will take their place until they are ready. At most, it will not be long, however, until the old original Zephyr will be back in service and two news ones in operation as well. A New, Improved Sheller J. V. Stradley and two sons, Ed ward and Earl, who conduct the Stradley machine shop in Greenwood and who have been making the Stradley ball bearing corn sheller, having sold many of them over the country and having one which they are using for their own work about Greenwood, are now building a new model, which is mounted on a truck, so arranged that power from the truck motor is used to operate the sheller. This enables the owner to drive to the exact spot where shell ing is to be done, getting about over the country with all the speed of truck transportation. The cob car rier on the new sheller is so arrang ed that the cobs are delivered to a truck on one side of the sheller, as the corn is being delivered at the other side. The first one of these to be completed, will go to a dealer at Randolph, Nebraska. Work will be started on additional shcllers of this type at once, as there should be a good demand for this kind of a light, compact sheller. I. 0. 0. F.
