FLOOD SAVES WPA MONEY
Norfolk, Neb. The person who
first said there's something good In
everything might cite the following
as an example: The forces of nature,
in the form of the recent flood wa
ters, saved approximately $2,000 in
WPA funds by finisning the job of
making a channel for the Northfork
river north of Norfolk. WPA work
ers started cutting the new channel
several months ago, and when the
high waters got thru the Job was
done, despite considerable damage to
property.
EYES HURT IN BLAST
Broken Row. Ne3. -Allan Davis
and Lawrence Brown, young farmers
living near here, are recovering their
eesigi in a Broken Bow hospital
after an explosion. Both Davis' eyes
and one of Brown's were injured
when hot babbitt metal exploded as
they were repairing a tractor. Dr.
G. T. Erickson said both will regain
their sight.
HUNGARY WANTS SHARE
BANK WILL PAY FIREMEN
Omaha. The First National Bank
of Omaha took over the 54S.OOO
judgment obtained by the city fire- bank, and to waive interest from now
iately. About 300 will collect approx
imately $140 each. They will be re
quired to sign assignments of their
shares of the judgment over to the

pay cut ruled illegal by the state su
preme court. Bank officials said fire
men will get their back pay immed-

Omaha. A federal court applica

housing administration employe was
dismissed. The application was with
drawn when it was learned a muni
cipal court action instituted by the
Updike Lumber and Coal company
against the FIIA employe was dis
mieeed at request of the plaintiff.
Budapest. .Newspaper accounts
and guarded statements by officials
concerning - Germany's reoccupation
of the Rhineland indicated Hungary
may also seek to break the restraint
of treaties imposed by the World
war. The newspaper '.'Eight O'Clock"
said "that which Germany forcibly
seized cannot be denied to Hungary."
Cross today, waters of the Floyd river
threatened new losses in the coun
try surrounding northern Iowa. Many
are homeless and in need of relief.
TWO PICKETS ARE SLAIN
Seaside, Ore. Two men were kill
ed and another injured "in a fight
between worgers and pickets at the
Crown Willamette Logging company
Saturday. James Ray, about 3 5,. of
Seaside, and William Blackwood,
about 40, both pickets, were, shot 'to
death. William Weedel, also a picKei,
was critically injured. State police
and sheriff's officers sped to the
scene. A union jurisdictional dispute
has caused friction for months.
