Gumbel. Mr and Mrs. Harry Anderson and family of Waverly spent Sunday even ing at the Leo Peters home. Mrs. George Welton and children of Colon spent Sunday here visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Welton. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Armstrong and Miss Roxanna Allen were Lin coln visitors on last Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rauth of Weeping Water spent Sunday here visiting Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Witt. Mrs. Ethyl Armstrong and son of Davey were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Armstrong on Sunday. Mrs. W. P. Willis, Mrs. Mabel Ham ilton, Miss Ella Johnson were shop ping in Ashland on last Saturday. Mrs .Walter Holt, Mrs. Goodhart Vant and Mrs. Ben Howard were shopping in Lincoln on last Tuesday. Mr. Odgen of Colville. Wash., came in Thursday for a few cays visit with hi3 sister, Mrs. Ed F. Brunkow and husband. Mrs. Nellie Van Doren of Lincoln is here helping care for Mrs. L. M. Mowery who is quite poorly again at this time. Mr and Mrs. R. E. Mathews and son spent Sunday afternoon and evening in Lincoln with Mr. and Mrs. O. L Holland Miss Florence Beighley who teaches at Plattsmouth, spent the week end here visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Armstrong. Mrs. A. E. Leesley and daughters. Beulah, Dorothy and Vedah visited at the Walter Jacobmeier home at Eagle on Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Marolf went to Council Bluffs, la., Friday morn ing to attend the funeral of her cousin, the late Mr. Wright. Misses Rhoda and Mary Carnes and Mrs. Philips all of Lincoln, spent Saturday here visiting their sister, Mrs. Niles Coleman and family. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Peters of Lin coln visited at the Fred Etheredge home the first of last week. Sirs. Peters is a cousin of Mrs. Etheredge. Mrs. Jennie Farmer and son Harry of near South Bend tailed on Mr. and Mrs. Lou Sniffer Sunday evening. Mr. Shiffer's condition remains abou the same. Ruth Harmon was a supper guest of Dorothy Leesley on Tuesday even ing and then thy attended the Greenwood-Eagle basketball game at Eagle that evening. Mr. and Mrs. I). S. Rogers and son. D. S., drove to Omaha last Saturday to visit their daughter, Mrs Edgar Plager of Brock who is confined to the University hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Evans, June and Gene of Lincoln, Mrs. Hagerman, Lawrence and Hannah of McCool, Ne braska were dinner guests at the John Lambert home on Sunday. Mrs. James Mercer left for her home at Etterville, Missouri the lat ter part of last week after spending about a week hero with her daugh ter, Mrs. Frank Hurlbut and family. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Vance are the proud parents of a son born Monday, Dec. 1C at the Bryan Mem orial hospital in Lincoln. Mrs. Vance will be remembered as Miss Lillian Low. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gribble went to Beaver Crossing last Friday where they visited Mr. and Mrs. George Bridenball and also helped them move into their new home. They returned home Monday evening. Mrs. Alvin Rcitcr of Cuperlino, Calif., who is here visiting her sons, Robert and Harold Mason and other relatives and old friends went to Elm wood Sunday to visit her sister, Mrs. Ray Parscli and family. - - I Mrs. Mahel Hamilton and son, Ger ald and Mrs. W. T. Willis were Lin coln visitors last Thursday. Mrs Hamilton and Gerald coiiwUilcd the doctors in regard to Gerald's health and he is getting along nicely. Ernest McGill. the small son of Mr. and Mrs. Win. McGill had the isfortune to break his left arm just I above the wrist while playing at i 'school last Friday. Dr. Talcott was called and he is getting along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kupke and family of near Murdock, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Jardine of Sioux City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Landou and son and Mr. and Mrs. Win. Renwanz, Jr., and family were guests of Mr. Wm. Ren wanz, Sr., on Sunday. Mrs. Helen Lemon and Mrs. Harry Schroeder arrived last Friday from i Long Beach, Calif., and then went on 10 Rochester, Minn., to visit Francis Lemon who is at the Mayo hospital at that place. At the latest report he is getting along nicely. Friends here received word the first of the week that Mr. Herman Erun-ko.s- had been able to leave the hos pital in Lincoln the latter part of the week. Sir. Brunkow had been in the hospital almost five months from injuries he had received in an auto mobile wreck. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. White and Mr. and Mrs. G. E Bucknell and sons went to Lincoln Sunday afternoon where they attended the Presentation of Oratorio, "The Elijah," by the University Choral Union at the uni versity coliseum. The members of the Epworth League met at the church basement Friday evening at which time they enjoyed a Christmas party. There was a good crowd present and the time was spent playing games. A locely lunch was served at the close of the evening. Rev. and Mrs. B. E. Gideon of Carleton visited over Wednesday evening and Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Warren. They had accom panied her mother, Mns. Lucy Marsh to Lincoln to consult the doctors. They all returned to their home Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Curtis and son, Bobbie and Mrs. R. C. Wright and Kenneth Schneider stopped last Fri day for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stradley and family as they were on their way home from an ex tended visit in Pennsylvania. They left for their home at Ilemingford on Sunday. IJr. Lorenzo Lemon and his sister, Mrs. Harry Schroeder returned home from Rochester, Minn., the first of last week where they had been at the bedside of their brother, Francis Lemon who is at the Mayo hospital. They reported him as getting along nicely, although it will be some little time before he is able to return home. On last Thursday a number of the neighbors and friends of Herman Brunkow, who has been in a Lin coln hospital for the past five months from an accident in an auto wreck, gathered at the farm which he was farming and husked his corn. There were about fifty men and twenty teams and wagons and the job was scon completed. Hold Birthday Party. Mrs. Zola Hoffman entertained at a party Sunday afternoon, Dec. 15 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. I. McCartney near Waverly in honor of her daughter, Nancy Ann's fifth birthday. There were six teen boys and girls and their moth ers present. The time was spent playing games and in visiting. The guest of honor received many lovely gifts. A nice lunch was served late in the afternoon. All departed for their homes at a late hour wishing Nancy Ann many more happy birth days. Christian Church Notes. Sunday school at 10 a. m. Morning services and communion at 11. The Christmas program was given Sunday evening and was very well given and all those who took part and those who had the directing are to be complimented upon their fine work. The program was greatly en joyed by the large crowd present. Juniors Enjoy Birthday Party. Thu members of the Junior class of the Greenwood high school and a few friends and their sponsor, Mr. Warren and Mrs. Warren went to the home of thir class president, Eliza beth Martin on last Saturday, De cember 14th where they enjoyed a party in honor of Elizabeth's birth- iday. The time was spent playing games. The guest of honor received a number of lovely gifts. A nice lunch was served late in the even ing. All departed at a late hour wishing Elizabeth many more happy birthdays. Spend Day Quilting. Mrs. Earl Iden entertained a num ber of friends and neighbors at her home on last Wednesday. The day was spent quilting and at noon a lovely dinner was served to the guests at one long table. A nice lot of work v. aa accomplished during the day. Those present were Mrs. Wm. Blat tler, Mrs. Wm. Bloom, Mrs. Frank Welton, Mrs. E. E. Mathis, Mrs. Lou Hurlbut, Mrs. Louise Hanson, Mrs. Harry Marolf, Mrs. L. F. Peters, Mrs. J. E. Lambert, Mrs. L. J. Dimmitt, Mrs. W. A. White, Mrs. P. A. San born of Omaha. M. E. Church Notes. Frederick Anderson, pastor Sunday school 10 a. m. Morning worship at 11. Christian Endeavor at 7 p. m. Evening services at 8. Guild next Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 31 at the church with Mrs. E. E. Mathis and Mrs. Walter Woitzel as hostesses. The Christmas program was given last Sunday evening before a large crowd and was greatly enjoyed by all. Those who had charge of the di recting and practicing and all those who took part in it are to be compli mented upon their fine work. The Christmas sermon entitled "The Seven Birth Titles of Christ" given by Rev. Anderson was certainly very interesting. Legion Auxiliary Entertained. The American Legion Auxiliary unit was pleasantly entertained Wed nesday afternoon, Dec. 18 at the Le gion hall by Mrs.' Earl Stradley and Miss Edith Landergren. There were 12 members and four children pres ent. The regular business meeting was held, after which a short pro gram was enjoyed and an exchange of gifts around a beautifully lighted and decorated Christmas tree. The rest of the time was spent working on their quilt. After this a lovely lunch was served by the hostesses. The next meeting will be January 15 at the Legion hall w ith Mrs. Len nie Bowers and Mrs. J. D. Bowers as hostesses. Rcbekahs Hold Reguar Meet. The Greenwood Rebekah Lodge No. 240 held its regular meeting Thurs day evening with a good attendance. After the business session a Christ mas party was enjoyed and the hus bands of the members were also pres ent. There were five tables of play ers present and the time was spent playing pinochle. Mrs. L. C. Marvin won the royal prize for the ladies. Mr. J. S. Gribble won the royal prize prize for the men with the second high score A lovely lunch was served by Mrs. L. C. Marvin, Mrs. Wilbur 1'aulus and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Peters as the committee in charge. L. C. C. Kensington Entertained. The L. C. C. Kensington was pleas antly entertained Thursday after noon, Dec. 19 by Mrs. R. E. Mathews at a one o'clock luncheon at her home. There were five tables of play ers present. The time was spent play ing five hundred. Mrs. Harry Schroe der won the royal prize. Mrs. L. C. Marvin "won the second high prize. Mrs. P. L. Hall won the guest prize. Mr3. O. L. Holland of Lincoln and Mrs. Glenn Peters were also guests. An exchange of gifts was enjoyed around a beautifully decorated Christ mas tree The next meeting will be in three weeks, January 9 with Mrs. E. O. Miller at a one o'clock luncheon. Honored at Linen Shower. On last Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Mike Sheehan of near Manley, Mrs. George Leaver and Miss Mary Kelly entertained at a linen shower at the I. O. O. F. hall in honor of Mrs. W. F. Keckler. There were about twenty five prseent The time was spent visit ing and with games The guest of honor was presented with many love ly gifts. A nice lunch was served at the close of the afternoon. Missionary Society Meets. The Missionary Society was pleas antly entertained Thursday afternoon by Mrs. Ben Conley at her home. There were fifteen members and visi tors present. The regular business meeting was held, which was follow ed by the devotionals led by Mrs. Wm. Blattler and the lesson study by Mrs. Elmer Mathis. A short Christ mas program was then enjoyed by all. The rest of the time was spent socially and a lovely lunch was served at the close of the afternoon. Death of Infant. TIid infant of Mr. and Mrs. George Brandcs of O.ua'ja, which passed away Wednesday at their home was brought here Thursday afternoon for burial in the Greenwood cemetery. Mrs. Brandes will be remembered as Miss Tatsy McNurlln. M. E. Guild Entertained. The M. E. Guild was pleasantly entertained Tuesday afternoon at the church by Mrs. N. D. Talcott and Mrs. Wm. McGill. The business meeting was held after which a short' of gunshot wounds inflicted by rob program was enjoyed. The rest of bers. The Men's Brotherhood of the Methodist church met Thursday even ing at the church. There was a good crowd present. The regular business meeting wa3 conducted by the prcs-, ident, Mr. W. E. White. Mathis and Fred Etheredge. 'TIHED DEGEEiT CLAIMED Wichita, Kas. W. F. Wiebeck was awarded judgment of $5,330.21 by a district court jury on a charge that two officers had applied "third de gree" methods to wring a "confes sion from him in a murder case. Wiebeck, a produce salesman, charged George Caraway, former sheriff of Barton county, and Don Thrasher, former Wichita policeman, subjected him to harsh treatment dur ir.g questioning about the death of Otto Reiter, a farmer.
