AGE FOUR Alvo News Roy Stuart was looking after some business matters in Plattsmouth and Omaha one day last week. Mrs. Clara Matzen was in Platts mouth last Tuesday, where she went to look after some business matters at the court house. She was accom panied by Roy Stuart, who took her in his auto. Mrs. Carl Hoffman and the child ren have been visiting with her folks in Council Bluffs, Carl taking them there last Sunday. He has been batch ing during their absence and is get ting anxious for their return. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mann were visiting for a few days last week at the home of their daughter, Mrs Howard Brunkow and family. Her man accompanied his son-in-law to Alvo when he was called here to look after some business matters, and met a number of his old friends here. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rosenow de parted last Sunday for a ten days visit in the northwest, having as their objective, Sheridan, Wyoming, where they went to visit at the home of Mr and Mrs. Obed Clarke, and where they expect to enjoy a splendid out ins:. Mrs. Rosenow and Mrs. Clarke are sisters. Joe Bird, who has been living on a farm in the country, moved to town last week, and is now residing in the house where Sterling Coatman resided for some time past. Sterling has pur chased the house formerly owned by John Coleman, who moved to Omaha, and thus the needs of both families are supplied. Mrs. C. W. Jewell, who is at Elm- wood, where she is caring for Mrs. Walter Bartlett, reports Mrs. Eart lett as being quite a lot better and so she can get out of her bed, being able to stand and walk some about the house. This is good news as Mrs. Bartlett has been in a very serious stat of health. Undergoes Operation Lyle Bouton, who has been troubled with repeated attacks of appendicitis, was taken to a hospital in Omaha last Saturday, where he underwent an operation for relief from the mal ady and is reported as getting along very nicely since undergoing the ordeal. Fred Rueter and wife drove up to visit the patient Wednesday and found him making fine progress. Schools to Open Sept. 2nd The Alvo Consolidated schools are to open for the school year on Mon day, Sept. 2nd. Everything is in readiness for the opening, the school house and fixtures having been placed in the best of shape during the vaca tion and the teachers will come back rested and refreshed from their re spective vacations, a considerable part of which has been spent out of doors, so that the return to books and study will be a delightful change for both scholars and teachers. Had Pleasant Gathering In honor of the wedding of Miss Vera Rueter and Wayne Wiles which occurred about a month ago, there was held on last Wednesday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rueter a shower for the newly weds. Home from the West Mr. and Mrs. William Reuter, of near Wabash, were in Alvo last Wed nesday, where they were looking af ter some business matters and visit ing at the homes of Fred Rueter and Daniel Rueter, brothers of , Will. They have just returned from a trip to the west, which included Denver, Idaho Springs and many of the interesting points of the west. They went out by way of the Republican river valley, where the devastating flood of the early part of the season did so much damage and found that nart of the country now as dry as a bone, with crop3 suffering greatly. At Cambridge they met with and visited at the home of Rev. and Mrs. H. A. Norenberg, a former pastor of this vicinity, who is now pastor of a church there. They found them very busy with the work of the church and making a success of it, despite the fact that Rev. Norenberg is in poor neaitn, sunenng irom rneuma- tism. Both Rev. and Mrs. Noren-, berg extended greetings to the friend3 in Cass county whom they had known when working here. Returned to Alvo last Week Mr and Mrs. L. M. Hauptman, su perintendent of the Alvo schools and wife, who have been making their home in Lincoln during the summer while Prof. Hauptman was attending summer school and adding to his fund of knowledge in spite of the extreme ly hot weather, returned home last Sunday, August 11th, putting in the greater part of the past week getting located in their new home which has just been rebuilt by P. J. Linch, mak- ng a veritable new house out of the place. Wins Scholarship in Contest In a contest between some fifty stu dents at Wesleyan University, Donald McKinzie was awarded a scholarship at Columbia University and with the opening of the coming school year this coming month, will depart for the east to enroll as a student in thi3 famous old school. Locks Good for Alvo Alvo is promised a practicing phy sician and as well a new druggist, and sume say a hospital or a place where patients can be cared for and nursed back to health. There is a demand for such an institution in this part f the country some say it is just a rumor, but there are always some who will not believe. Underwent an Operation Mrs. Simon Rehmeier went to the hospital and there underwent an op eration last Thursday on her feet, which have been causing her much grief of late, paining her continually and to such an extent that she has found great difficulty in getting around on them. When she was a girl in the eld country, like many an other maiden of those days and some of the present time as well, was com pelled to wear wooden shoes, which crippled and dwarfed her feet and as a result she has suffered much agony with them for a good number of years past. Hsr trip to the hospital and subsequtnt operation was made in the hope of finding relief and her friends trust she will be able to return home in the near future with her feet in good condition. Attended Funeral of Cousin Last Monday, August 12, John W. Eanning and wife of Alvo, accompan ied by MiS3 Pearle Banning, of Union, and Mr. and Mrs. Marion N. Tucker of Nehawka, were over to Af ton, Iowa, where they went to attend the fun eral and burial of their cousin, Miss Helen Seeley, age 75, who made her home in Lincoln in late years and who parsed away there last Saturday, August 10. Miss Seeley's former home was at Afton and it is there that oth er members of the family are resting. In speaking of the crops there, Mr. Eanning says they are much better than i a the vicinity of Alvo and fully equal to or better than corn in the eastern part of the county, where more rain was received than was al loted to this section. All over southeastern Nebraska the corn is beginning to show the effects of a lack of moisture, and unless rain comes soon, the crop will be badly damaged by the prevailing dry hot winds. TO JAIL FOE CONTEMPT , Dallas, Tex. Judge Towne Young sent eix more striking women gar ment workers to Jail for contempt of court as a result of a riot in front of two dress factories here last week when lour women were stripped and six others partly disrobed.
