DaTiB and wife, of Lincoln, were visiting with friends and locking- after business scatters in Murray and Nehawka the past few days. Harvey G. Manners and W. E. Rosen cram of Plattsmouth were in Nthawka last Monday afternoon lock ing after some business matters and meeting with friends. Mercuriue K. Smith of Nebraska City was a visitor in Nehawka on Monday afternoon of thi6 week, call ed here to look after some business natters for a short time. Mrs. Frank Lindner is enjoying the conveniences of a new power washing machine, which is a very fine addi tion to anyone's laundry equipment, especially these hot days. Messrs W. O. Troop. Roy Gregg and Ray Creamer were at Weeping Water last Monday, where they went to se cure the first payment of their IS 3 5 corn-hog reduction contracts. Donald OpP. who has been visiting lor the past week with his sister, Mrs. Knos Plunkett and husband, of n-ar Weep?ng Water, for some time past, returned home last Sunday and Gerald Opp went for a visit of a week. Herman Smith last week installed a new windmill at the home of State Senator Fred L. Caretens, near Avoca. The new mill is giving splendid ser vice these Lot cays, pumping an abundance of water for the stock on the Carsten farm. J. B. Mast, of Taponah. Oklahoma. v.Lo attended the funeral of George Coziah at Omaha and the subsequent burial of the remains at Glenwood, Iowa, as a g-uest at the home cf his sister. Mrs. Ida Lopp, of Nehawka, before returning home. John S. Vallery and family are en joying a new Chevrolet which they purchased a few days ago. j traska City, was a visitor in Nehawka last Monday afternoon and was look ing after some business matters for a time among the merchants of Ne hawka. Alfred Anderson and family, of Omaha, were guests for the day last Sunday at the home of Mrs. Ander son's mother. Mrs. Albertina Ost, be ing joined there by Charles McCar tney and family, of Union, they all having a very fne visit with Mrs. Ost and each other. Mrs. Ella Troop and daughter, Lavina, are at Cedar Creek this week assisting with the work of cooking for threshers at the home of George Lohnes, uncle of Mrs. Troop. A large amount of small grain was raised this year, and considerable time is requir ed to get the threshing done. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Case and their daughter. Miss Beuie, were guests for the day last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Opp, where they enjoyed a very fine visit. They can; especially to see Mrs. Opp, who has been very sick and still re j::ains so, although they found her some better. Mrs. Lo lines is en joying better health than for some time past, which will be good news to her many friends. Betty and Keith Ost, children or Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Ost, entertained a large number of their friends at a party at their home last Saturday j night. The Smith family were also pleased to have their daughter. i Violet (Mrs. Charles Souls) and her little daughter of Council Bluffs here for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Smith took the latter back home Sunday night in their car. While here, the children discovered a large bull snake sleeping en top of the automobile. Vacationing in the TTest Clarence Hansen and family are on i vacation trip at this time, visiting the mountains and other places of in terest in the west. Tbey expect to be gone about ten days and are seeing some interesting tights as well as en joying the cool climate of that part of the country, where the mercury goes down at night to a point where one can sleep comfortably under a blanket. Tbey were accompanied as far as Tork by Mrs. Emma Chris weisser, mother cf Mrs. Hansen, who will visit relatives there until they re turn to pick her up while en route home. Kany Enjoy Family He union On last Sunday, August 4th, there was held at Beatrice a gathering of the descendants of Andreas Sturm, grandfather of A. F. Sturm, a well known Nehawka citizen. There were present at this reunion in the neigh borhood of one hundred descendants of their early pioneer, and their fam ilies, they coming from various points in Nebraska and Kansas. A picnic dinner was served during the noon hour, the assemblage being held in the park at Beatrice. The afternoon program that had been planned was cut short on account of the storm that came along, canning many to leave for borne. However, a most pleasant time was had by all. Those from here who were present Included A. F. Sturm and family, Fred Schumaker and family, John G. Wun derlich and wife and Leo Switzer and family. Eidn't Like His Companion While John L. Smith, who resides with his son, Herman Smith, north of town, was sleeping on a sanitary cot in the yard during the excessively hot nights of the past week, and was just slipping off Into a sweet slum ber, a six foot bull snake that had been resting in a tree above him lost its foothold, or whatever snakes have, and came tumbling down, falling across the head and chest of Mr. Smith. Instantly he was wide awake and sensing tte situation with a flip of the sheet wrering him threw the snake to the ground, where it struck with great force and crawled away ia the darkness. Mr. Smith, when be heard the pe culiar sound being made by his strange bedfellow, was-prompt In de ciding be did not want it for a com panion. There are a large number of bull snake this year, and although quite harmless to mankind, no one wants them around. Tbey do. however, de stroy many Insect pests and are said to be valuable on a farm In more ways than one. Advised Father Very Poorly A. B. Rutledge, whose father is a veteran cf the Union army, having attained the age of 88 years, is in very poor health at this time, being confined to his bed and not expected to survive. He is being given excel lent care, bat is in feeble condition. Stimbert of the Nehawka schools is Scoutmaster, and accompanied by Mr. 1 Stimbert and Glen Rutledge. member of the town toaJ.d an(J .ditor of tbe xthawta En- two weeks' trip to the Rocky moun tain country cf Colorado, where they expect to have a most enjoyable time. They will visit many places of inter est along the way, pausing at Inland, where Mr. Stimbert'B parents reside, to pick up C. T. Stimbert. father of the Scoutmaster, who will make the trip from there with them. They have secured one of the 6Chool buses used by the Nehawka schools, drawing a map of Nebraska on each side of the bus, on which is shown the location of Nehawka. indicated J by a large red arrow pointing to thiB particular section as the "Garden Spot of Nebraska." We admire their loyalty to their home community and can see how much good advertising will come as a result of their trip to ;the west, bearing this inscription and fmap. They plan to be gone a full two weeks and will rough it all the way, pitching camp wherever night overtekes them. Among those making the trip are Eurntll AdamB. Dean Nutzman. "Wesley Stone, Maurice Undner, Lester Stef fens and Eilly Rosencrans. the lat ter of Plattsmouth. and a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. John Wunderlich. Billy has been on two similar trips before with Rev. Murphree and his group from Louisville that took thera one year to Jacksonville, Florida, and points in the south and another year to Washington. D. C. and points in that part of the country.' j It will be a wonderful trip for the boys privileged to go. made possible only through the sacrifice cf elder leaders who are willing to "bother themselves" with looking after the welfare of a gToup of boys while out to enjoy a vacation themselves. Not all adults are qualified to supply such leadership, and those who are and do are entitled to a vote of thanks on the :art of parents whose boys are thus given opportunity of seeing the out side world. The gipsy trail is growing in favor as part of the up-to-date boys' pro grain and is recognized and given in creasing attention each year by alert Scoutmasters and other leaders in boys' work. Veterans' hospital where he was operated cn late Thursday night. They found Mr. Reed very cheerful and while his condition is still very serious he is making a strong fight and it is hoped that he may soon be able to show definite im provement. Mr. Reed has had a veryj severe case of appendicitis that has caused a great deal of apprehension to the attending physicians. Mrs. Reed, who had been visiting at Paw nee City with relatives came Friday to Lincoln to be with the husband. While at Lincoln the Legion mem bers also visited with Claude Rich ardson, who Is now improving and it is hoped will soon be able to return j home and relieved of his condiaon that has caused him a great deal of suffering.
