"The Rock" to Be Presented.
As the closing play of its season,
the Religious Drama club of the
Congregational church at Wenping
Water has selected Mary P. Ham
lin's three-act drama, "The Rock.''
r.ecause of the in-portance cf the
production and in order tc give as
jnany people of the county as p .s
sible the opportunity of seeing it,
the play will be given on- two suc
cessive nights, April 2 8 and 29 at
8 o'clock. As usual with the offer
ings of this club, the play will be
presented in the church auditorium
in an atmosphere cf worship, and no
admission will be charged. There
will, however, be a silver offering re
ceived each evening in order to cover
the expense of the play's elaborate
out-of-door oriental settings and
costuming.
"The Rock" has been given hun
dreds of successful performances in
the churches of this country. It will
be ouered at Weeping Water in a
modernized and heightened version
which promises to bring the strong
est dramatic values of the play into
relief and to emphasize its already
proven religious worth. Taking a
long leap back through the centuries,
"The Rock" brings into sharp focu3
the character development and per
sonality of that most colorful of the
early disciple3 of Jesus, Simon Peter.
It makes real and compelling the
story of hi3 call and of his hard-won
victory over his Intensely human
weaknesses. Though the person of
Jesus is net represented upon the
stage, the influence of his ministry, of
hi3 sufferings, and his trumph per
vade the entire action, making of the
production virtually a passion play
of deep spiritual power.

'SCO Millions
to be Allotted
to Housing
Rural Rehabilitation Also Is Slated
to Come Out of the Five Bil
lion Relief Fund.
Washington. Plans for the use of
upward of S00 millions in low cost
housing and for putting persons in
rural areas on a self sustaining basis
were disclosed to have been worked
out by public works and relief ad
ministration officials. To what extent
these projects are carried out, how
ever, d.epends upon the allocation
that President Roosevelt makes of
the 5 billion work fund.
The contemplated division of the
fund would be about 400 millions
for low cost housing under public
works and between 400 and 500 mil
lions for helping persons on farms
back on their feet.
The PWA was revealed to have
applications from seventy-seven cities
for low cost housing projects. On
half of these preliminary ground
work has been done and officials be
lieved within a month the projects
could be put in shape for sending
the money forward.
They estimated some 200 millions
might be used in these. Two or three
months would be needed to put proj
ects in shape for final approval. All
however, could be put under way by
November when the president has
said he expected the work fund to
reach its peak of activity, officials
estimated.
Figures available on the number
of farm families on relief listed 1,
029,000 families receiving help from
the government. Of these 843,200
were classed as capable of being
helped back to their own economic
feet. There were 185,800 families
classed as not likely ever to be self
sustaining. The relief administration figures it
costs from $300 to $700 to rehabili
tate one of three families, depend
ing upon location and the type of
help best adapted to the family. At
an average of $500 a family, it was
estimated $421,600,000 might be used
in this manner.
One reason why officials expect
plans to be approved by the presi-
dent is that to a large degree these
projects are regarded as capable of
returning the money to the treasury.
On the housing projects, in which
135 millions is now being spent in
thirty-nine slum clearance develop
ments, officials expect a large share
of the money to come back in the
form of rents, paying for themselves
within forty-five years.
TUGWELL PLACE HELD OPEN

year of leave from Columbia uni
versity having expired on March 1,

fered to extend his status as professor
of economics on leave for another

mated that he would continue the
present arrangement, remaining as
undersecretary, but keeping the door
