Sir Robert Peel Lady Peel (Beatrice Lillie)
"Absolutely untrue. Why, it's preposterous," said Beatrice Lillie,
above, famous actress, when she was told in New York City that
Mrs. Doris Draper had testified in a London court that she had
lived with the late Sir Robert Peel, inset, husband of the stage star,
for five years beforo he died last April. Mrs. Draper made her
jtatement during a suit to recover two ermine coats valued at $1,500.

COOPER RESISTS COUNCIL
OUSTER; BRIEF STUDIED
Des Moine, la., March 18. Fur
ther action in the state executive
council removal action ajtatnst Chair
man Harold M. Cooper of the state
liquor control commission was de
ferred today until a brief prepared
by Cooper's attorneys can be studied
by Assistant Attorney General Wal
ter Maley.
Maley said it probably will take
him at least two days to consider the
IS page brief and to prepare a re
port to the council.
Cooper and his attorneys. T. E
Diamond of She-idoh and H. G. Cart
wright of Marsballtown appeared be
fore the council at a closed session
this morning in response to the coun
cil's order that the liquor commis
sion chief show cause why he should
not be removed.
Cooper was convicted February 15
by a Linn county Jury on a charge
cf violating the liquor control act
and refused to resign when Governor
Clyde L. Herring requested him to
do so.
Setting forth the selections of the
Iowa liquor law under which an ap
pointive state officer may be removed
the brief submitted today cited yar-
ious court cases as sustaining the
contention that it is necessary to es
tablish "a bad Intent and purpose
and corrupt motives on the part of
Cooper" before he could be removed.
