Lincoln were guests for the day last
Sunday at the William Maseman
home in Avoca, where a very fine visit
and an excellent dinner were enjoy

critical condition, although he has
passed the crisis and is given a good
chance for recovery.

company, was a visitor in Omaha last
Friday and Saturday, where he was
attending the annual convention of
the Nebraska Retail Lumbermen's as

time.

the hospital in Omaha, where they
were visiting with the sister of Mrs
Hallstrom, Mrs. J. F. Sindelar, who

Word comes to friends here from

the past few weeks, was taken to an

Had Most Enjoyable Time
. Some fifty people of Avoca and vi
cinity, all friends of Mr. and Mrs.
Lester Hoback, who recently held a
farm sale and expect to move to Ne
hawka to reside, gathered at their
home last Sunday with well-filled
baskets and provided a splendid din
pier as well as a pleasant afternoon
for everyone. It was a fine expression
of the high esteem in which Mr. and
Mrs. Hoback are held by their friends
here, and we trust they will meet the
Eame friendly sort of people in their
Slew home at Nehawka.
Wen Cass County Tournament
Avoca has a reputation for turning
out good basketball teams and this
year secm3 to be no exception, for the
local team walked off with the honors
at the Cass county tournament held
last week at Elmwood and will rep
resent this section at the Class B dis
trict tournament to be held at
Brock. Should they win there, they
will meet the other district winners
at the regional tournament to be held
in Falls City this year. Formerly Ne
braska City has had this tournament
most of the time, being mere central
ly located, but found it unprofitable
and did not extend an Invitation for
this year's regional meet. Should the
local team also- take the regional
honors, it will again go to the state
tournament. Last year's team ran the
gauntlet or southeastern Nebraska
competition and made a nice showing
at the state meet.
Getting back to our account of the
Elmwood tournament, which occupied
the last four days of last week, Avoca
won it3 first game from Elmwood by
a score of 34 to 14; then took Eagle
Jn a very close battle, by a score of 23

and Mrs. Henry P. Smith, north of
town.

Weeping Water last Monday after
noon, as well as meeting with his
many friends while here.
Mr. and Mrs. William Spangler
were visiting in Plattsmouth and Om
aha on Monday of this week, where
they had business matters to look
after, making the trip in their car.
William Homan, living in the
southeastern part of the city, has been
kept to his home and not able to work
during the past week on account of a
severe attack of flu. He is reported as
improving at this time.
Jacob E. Renner was called to
Plattsmouth, where he has some busi
ness matters to look after on last Fri
day, and as he formerly resided there,
he met a host of his old time friends,
making his trip very pleasant.
Lee Howe, who has not been feel
ing the best for some time, was taken
to Omaha to receive treatment for
his health. Mrs. Howe is a daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Engelkemeier of
Plattsmouth and a sister of Mrs. Ster
ling Amick, of Weeping Water.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jochim, of
southwest of Manley, were in Weep
ing Water looking after some busi

that Mrs. August Riester, who makes
her home with her son, Frank Ries
ter and has been very ill, as being
considerably improved.
Miss Isabel Wiles, who has been
making her home in Plattsmouth dur
ing the past winter, where she wa3
assisting in the care of her brother-in-law,
Charles H. Warner, during his
fatal sickness, was visiting in Weep
ing Water last Monday and Tuesday.
Mrs. Warner and Mis3 Wiles are sis
ters. Miss Dorothy Riester, who is the
teacher of the school at Shady Corn
ers, some five miles west of Murdock,
and her sister, Miss Irene Riester,
who teaches just west of Mynard,
were spending the week end at the
home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Riester, northwest of Manley,
last Sunday.
Making Improvements at Cafe
Bill Johnson was making some Im
provements at the cafe, enclosing a
space under the stairway for storage
cf goods and also placing a railing in
the window to make a display, which
adds much to the appearance and
convenience of the place of business.
Home from the South
Starting Sunday morning and mak
ing five hundred miles the first day,
Elmer Michelsen, wife and two child
ren went south, where they visited
relatives in Oklahoma City and .other
points, also going to Wichita Springs,
Texas. They saw many sights of in
terest, among them the Arbuckle
mountains in Texas and Elmer says
they were among the nipst interesting
scenes encountered on the entire trip.
During the week they were gone, they
covred 2,500 mils.
Will Make Home in West
Carl Zessen, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Zessen, accompanied by the
wife and family, departed for Cali
fornia last Monday, where they ex
pect to mako their home in the fu
ture, at the town of Gerber. They
have been out there before and like
the country, expressing confidence
they will enjoy living in the west.
Furchases New Auto
Oscar C. Hinds, the banker, who
has been driving one of the Ford cars
cf an earlier model, last week bought
a new V-8 of the very latest models.
It was necessary to go to Omaha to
get the new car, John Cole and Mr.
Hinds going up Monday after it.
Tock Examination for Postmaster
Five of the citizens of Weeping
Water were in Plattsmouth last Sat
urday, where they took the examina
tion for postmaster here. They were
given their examination by Miss Ger-
to 22, and finally trimmed Murdock
by a 10 to 10 score.
The fans are all hoping the boys
will go on to greater victories, even
to getting a chance at the state Class
B title. Avoca continues to hold its
reputation for turning out good bas
ketball teams.
Considering the size of the town
and the school their showing i3 re
markable, as most towns of this size
are entered in a much lower classifi
cation and when it comes to state
competition, they find themselves up
against teams from towns of two and
three thousand population.
