PART of the Joy of eating fruit
comes from the lovely sur
roundings in which you find it.
What a good time Adam and Eve
must have had in the Garden of
Eden eating the first apple! Even
after they were evicted by the An
gel with the Flaming Sword it
must have been an exceedingly
agreeable memory! At any rate,
their descendants have gone right
on eating apples.
We're all out of the Garden of
Eden now. We don't even know
where it is. And unfortunately,
most of U3 can't pluck and eat
our fruits in either gardens or
orchards. Someone else does the
plucking in the sunshine and
sweet surroundings, and the best
he can do for us is to see that the
fruit reaches us in our homes with
as much of its original taste and
aroma as possible.
A Swell Job
The commercial canning indus
try doe3 a swell job for us in this
respect. Who of us hasn't men
tally glimpsed a branch of apple
or peach blossoms when opening a
Buperfine can of one of those
fruits? Who hasn't sensed the
warmth and romance of far-off
Hawaii when the lid comes off a
can of pineapple? Who hasn't . . .
But all this is apt to make us
homesick for leaves and sunshine
and outdoors. Let's eat some of
the fruit and see how it tastes.
Put, first of all. let's consider
?hat fruits are available in cans.
The list is long. There are ap
ples appl'3 butter! sauce, sliced
and whole apricot halves, black
berries, blueberries, and cherries
Wabash News
Sherman Hardaway, manager of
the L. Ii. Stanley stcre, accompanied
by Clarence Reuter, were looking af
ter some business matters in Murdock
os last Tuesday afternoon.
Harold Richards was looking after
some business matters in Nehawka on
Monday of last week, driving over to
the neighboring town in his car.
Elevator Stockholders Meet
The third attempt of the members
and stockholders of the Wabash Co
operative Grain company to hold the
annual meeting, was successful last
week, when a goodlp number turned
out to hear the reports cf the past
year's business and elect the 1935
directors and officers. Those chosen
to fill places cn the board of directors
include L. R. Stanley, Carl Schlap
hoff, Albert Tool, I. C. McCrorey,
Ralph Dorr, John C. Browne, and O.
II. Allen, the latter of Omaha.
The reports of Mr. Browne, as man
ager, were very pleasing and he was
re-elected to continue in that capacity
during the coming year.
Former Citizen Buried Here
Miss Abbie Van Every, who spent
her girlhood days in and near Wa
bash, attending School here and later
being engaged as a saleslady in the
L. R. Stanley store prior to resigning
her position to wed the Rev. S. A.
Jaccbson, a minister of the United
Brethren church, was killed in an
auto collision last week near her
home town of Vermillion, South Da
kota. After leaving here, they were
located in numerous towns to which
his work as paster took him, and for
eome time have resided at Vermillion,
which is net far from Sioux City.
Three sons and one daughter were
born to Mr. and Mrs. Jaccbson, who
with the father survive her passing.
The funeral was held from the Bap
tist church in Wabash last Sunday,
with interment in the Wabash ceme
tery, where the parents of the de
ceased are buried.
Mrs. Jacobson was so well known
here that the church was not able to
hold ell who came to pay tribute to
her memory.
New Living; in Wabash
Grandfather II. P. Hinds came to
Wabash in 100 4, thirty-one years ago.
and says he likes to make his home
here where he has lived so long bet
ter than any place else.
FRUITS IN CANS
black, red and white. There are
cocoanuts, cranberry jelly, figs
from the Orient and Texas, mixed
fruits for cocktails and salads, and
also gooseberries and grapes. Then
there are grapefruit, loganberries,
peaches in halves and sliced
pear halves, pineapple crushed,
sliced and In tidbits plums,
prunes dry and in syrup rasp
berries black and raspberries red.
Finally there are rhubarb, strained
fruits, strawberries and fruits put
up in wine for salad. If we got
them all, we would almost have a
regular Garden of Eden from cans.
Take Your Choice
At any rate, we can choose the
ones we like best of all these at
any time in almost any place.
Why not break with habit and try
a few new ones that it hasn't oc
curred to you to eat before? Take
cherries, for instance, which come
to mind because Washington's
Birthday occurs in February.
Here's an excellent cherry recipe
for cream tarts which will make
a sure-fire hit with your family.
The ingredients are:
2 egs A few drops vanilla
12 cup sugar 1 No. 2 can red
13 cup Hour pitted cherries
A few grains salt 23 cup sugar
2 cups milk
Beat the eggs slightly, then add
the sugar, flour and salt mixed
together. Add the scalded milk
slowly, and cook in a double boiler,
stirring constantly, until thick and
smooth. Add the vanilla, and
cool. Add the two-thirds cup sugar
to the cherry syrup from the can,
bring to boiling, add the cherries,
and cook gently until the syrup is
Mr. Hinds was born at Shabbia
Springs, Indiana, where he spent his
early life, and frcm there moved to
the vicinity cf DeKalb, Illinois, where
he was engaged in farming for a num
ber of pears. In 1875, when he was
25 years of age, he came west, ar
riving in Sioux City early in April.
It had been a very severe winter and
the river was still frozen over and
he recalls having crossed the ice at
Sioux City to the Nebraska side, be
ing located in that vicinity for some
time. Later he removed to Decatur,
Nebr., where he remained for about
ten years and says he liked it there
very well. Pushing cn further west,
the family moved to Banner county
in western Nebraska, where they liv
ed for seventeen years. It was here
that they attained their greatest suc
cess, living a happy contented farm
life, but with the children growing
up, greater educational advantages
were desired and they moved to the
vicinity cf Schuyler in 1902. After
spending two years there, they came
to Wabash in 1904 and purchased the
hotel, where he has made his home
ever since. During the intervening
years his wife and helpmate passed
on, and it is but natural that he de
sires to spend his remaining days
here where so many happy years have
flitted by.
At the time they located here in
1904, Wabash was one of the livest
cf towns and had many stores. Mr.
Hinds remembers among some of those
who lived here and were engaged in
business, Mike Cavey, Janjes Clarke,
B. F. Allen, Silas Greenslate, Brick
Swearisgen and George Hay. Later,
the Rock Island railroad was built,
locating a station at Murdock, and the
territory was divided with Wabash
beginning to lose population and some
of its business houses. However, as
Mr. Hinds puts it, "Wabash is a good
town yet," and he wants to spend his
remaining days here among the old
scenes.
FAVORS POTATO PROGRAM
Washington. William Morrow of
Alliance, Neb., secretary of the Ne
braska Certified Potato Seed Grow
ers association, endorsed the proposed
potato control legislation as bene
ficial to western Nebraska's commer
cial growers.
He said the drouth had reduced
seed supplies sufficiently that west
ern Nebraska probably would not be
able to plant a normal crop and that
the reduction proposals thus should
not affect the district's growers.
rich and thick. CooL Fill tart
shells half full of the cream mix
ture, and cover thickly with the
glazed cherries. This makes eight
tarts.
Try These Desserts
Or combine two of these fruits
in a dessert which Is delicious
such as the following Pineapple
Rhubarb Ice. The Ingredients are

2 cups water 1 cup water
Dissolve the gelatin in the boil
ing water. Boil the two cups of
water and sugar for two or three
minutes, and add to the gelatin.

rhubarb should be cut in small
pies and then cooked till very
soft in the one cup of water.
Press through a sieve, and add to
the first mixture. (There should
be two cups of rhubarb juice.)
Freeze in refrigerator trays, stir
ring often at first, then occasion

A simpler dessert for children
is Peach Junket. Its ingredients
are:

Heat the milk to lukewarm and
dissolve it in the junket. Do not
stir after dissolving. Drain th
peaches well and lay half of them
in the bottoms of individual glass

set in refrigerator to chill and
set, being careful not to agitato
it, or it will whey.' ,When ready
to serve, lay the remaining
peaches on top. Serves six.
LONG SLASHES AT FARLEY
Washington. Slashing at Post
master General Farley for the third
day in a row, Senator Huey Long
sought vainly to have the senate di
rect Secretary Ickes to make avail
able information which Long said
the secretary had about the postal
chief. The Louisianian has proposed
a deep investigation of Farley by the
senate, but rather than wait for that
inquiry he tried to have Ickes act.
Long contended that Farley was in
vestigated by agents of the interior
department.
When Senator Clark (d., Mo.) ob
jected Long moved to suspend the
senate rules and then talked for the
rest of the day before withdrawing
the motion. He said he could bring
witnesses from West Virginia and
perhaps from the senate itself to sup
port his charge that Farley used an
application for an RFC loan from
the Baltimore & Ohio railroad last
fall as the basis for seeking support
from an official of that road for Clem
Shaver, candidate against Rush D.
Holt for the senate.
Senator Clark asked Long if he
had read a denial of that charge from
John J. Cornwall, former West Vir
ginia governor and general counsel
of the B. & O. Long said he had not,
but could furnish witnesses and
'some of 'em ain't so far from where
the senator is sittin'."
