Marcus Poteet, republican candi
date for congreE3 for this district
was a visitor here early this week.
Bert Rorbcr has added to his

rolet which he is sure well pleased
with.

Wood's store and market, was call
ed to Omaha last Tuesday where he
had soir.e business to look after.

in not the very best of health at this
time and is kept from his work on
account of not being able to work.
Frank Ohmes has i con building a
new chicken house and a hog house
which will care the better for the
stock which Frank has in these lines.
Miss Lucille Bueissing of Alvo ic
working at the Farmers Trading Post
in Elmwood, having accepted the
position and is liking the work here
very much.
Ernil IL Halkc who has been liv
ing alone was in town last Tuesday
afternoon and secured some shingles
for the placing of a roof on the
building at the farm.
Mrs. Marion Ffander who was in
Omaha for soir.s time following an

Telephone and Telegraph company

Making Success of Ministry.
Ernest Baker, the pastor of the
Christian church of Elmwood whe
has been here for the past four years
and has ever endeavored to make
the services interesting and worth
while, and which has been with the
co operation of the members of the
Bible school and the church as well
as the community, desires a continu
ance of the co-operation which has
done so much for the work in this
field. There is a place for the min
ister to occupy, a place for the offi
cial board and for every member of
the church, and the entire Bible
school and with these all working in
unison with their trust in the Mas
ter, there is no end of the achieve
ment which the church can accom
plish. Let all work together.
Attendance Record Looking Good.
The taking of the attendance re
cord of the Christian church in the
month of October every year to show
the condition of the church and its
attendance. With the record com
parisons can be made and where
something has caused a loss of mem
bership and where gains had been
made, so that by experience greater
progress may be made in the future.
The idea seems a very good one and
should result in great gains for the
good of the church. Let every mem
ber come and be present at all the
services of the church and as well
bring some-ore along as they will
surely be interested and derive much
good from the attendance.

they got home there was no end in
the praise which was accorded the

tima which they provided the visi
tors. A very worthwhile program
and banquet was enjoyed. They are
now planning when they can return
the very pleasant entertainment to
the Weeping Water members.
Looks Like a Wedding.
Some one in Elmwood received a
clipping from a paper published at
Twin Falls, Idaho, which contained
a notice of Alvin Taylor obtaining
a license to wed, giving the name of
the bride-to-be. but said nothing
about a wedding. Mrs. James Tay
lor ol Elmwood also received a letter
from her son, Alvin, saying that he
would not get married before Octo-
ber K'th, which is not so
Of course this is too soon
congratulations.

tions of pleasure by the ladies.

of young people on Thursday even
ing, the occasion being the four
teenth birthday anniversary of Pa
tricia Cloidt. To assist in the occa
sion of the anniversary a number of
the school friends had been invited
to join in making it a memorable
event for the guest of honor.
The evening was spent in games
of all kinds and dancing that added
to the completion of the delightful
anniversary.

Ptak served dainty refreshments and
which were featured by the birth
day cake with its glowing candles.

Com and Rapidly Growing
Forage Included.
Des Moines, Oct. 12. A "preven-
poiiof" nrnffram designed to
"save millions next year by
pend-
ins thnua.iiids now" was
launched
-
in Inwa Friday, following a
conier-
ence between Governor Clyde L. Her
ring and federal relief officials.
Described as "the cheapest pos
sible means of effecting rural re
habilitation," the program involves
co-operation of state relief headquar
(ers. county committees, and the
state department of agriculture.
It is aimed at preventing a recur
rence of conditions of distress exist
ing on Iowa farms last summer dur-
fnc the iiroutn anu me cnmiu
invasion. Details were being worked
out bv Herring, E. M. Mulock, direc
tor of emergency relief, and two oth
er federal relief officials, I'rof
George Keller and W. J. Albers.
Assures Seed Corn.
Immediate steps include:
1. Buvinsr thousands of bushels
of corn for seed for next spring and
feed for work teams.
2. Development of a fast-growing
tomnorarv forage cron to plant on
bare meadows of southern Iowa coun
ties.
3. Limiting small grain acreage
in southern Iowa to forestall a pos
sible chinch bug invasion in 19
Assurance that enough seed corn
would be available for all southern
Iowa planting needs was given by
Governor Herring and federal offi
cials.
A survey by county committees
was started Friday to determine seed
and other relief needs on all pri
mary drouth area farms.
Distribution of soy bean and other
forage crop seed is planned for next
spring to supply southern Iowa
needs.
Cut Small Grain Area.
Albers said limiting the small
grain acreage is the only way to
save the corn if the chinch bug sit
uation becomes serious.
Cost of the program was not an
nounced, but officials said it would
be far less than expenditures foi
drouth relief in 1934, which were:
Chinch bug oil, $350,000; feed corn.
$34S,000; wheat, $156,725; hay,
$40,750; sudan grass seed. $12,574;
soy bean seed. $127, 000. In addition
costs were incurred to support farm
ers who moved to towns following
the drouth and chinch bug scourges.
