Mrs. Gertie Stradley, cf Waverly, Is here visiting her son, John Strad ley and family. Mrs. Stevens of Lincoln entertain ed her guests at Shorty's lunch room at Sunday dinner. Raymon Newkirk, of Omaha, was home visiting his parents over Satur day night and Sunday. The Misses Daisy and Anna Hurl hut were dinner guests of Miss Lucille Reese on last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ba tiers and daugh ters of Omaha visited Frank Lapham and sons Sunday afternoon. Misses Florence Beighley was home over the week end visiting with Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Armstrong. Mr. and Mrs. It. E. Frederick, of Murray called on Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilkens Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lapham and sons of Waverly were dinner guests of Mrs. Dora Leesley Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Rrandes, of Omaha, called on the Misses Anna and Daisy Hurlbut Sunday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harger and two children, of near Lincoln, visited Mr. and Mrs. John Elwood Sunday after noon. Mrs. Emily Sayles spent several days cf last week visiting at the liome of Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Arm strong. W. S. Karns made a business trip to Missouri and Kansas the first of last week. He returned home Wed nesday. Miss Lucille Leesley was home from Lincoln over the week end visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Leesley. Miss Minnie Palmquist was home from Lincoln over the week end, vis iting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Palmquist. G. W. Luneeford came in Saturday from the CCC camp near Manitou, Colorado, for a few days' visit with home folks. Mr. and Mrs. J. 15. Burris, of Om aha were dinner and supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ilillis on Sunday of last week. Mrs. Frank Wendt has been recov ering nicely at an Omaha hospital and will be able to return home in the near future. Mrs. G. W. Luneeford. who is at the St. Elizabeth's hospital in Lincoln, is recovering nicely and will soon be able to come home. Mi. and Mrs. William Armstrong. Miss Florence Beighley and Mrs. Emily Sayles were business visitors in Lincoln last Saturday. Mrs. Dave Behrens, of Yutan, Mrs. Dora Leesley and Mrs. Anna Apphum of Bradshaw were Lincoln business visitors on Wednesday. Mrs. Hazel Miller, Assembly War den of the Rebekah assembly of the State of Nebraska, called on Mrs. Joe Kyles Tuesday afternoon. W. A. Armstrong built some cement steps at the Christian church parson age one day last week and is doing some repair work this week. The Dorcas society of the Chris tian church will meet Friday, October 12 at the church with Mrs. Frank Rouse and Mrs. C. W. Newkirk as the hostesses. Mr. and Mrs. Charley Martin and daughter, Elizabeth and Rev. W, E. Goings were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nels Jensen r.n Sunday. Lloyd Lapham, who has been vis iting his sister, Mrs. Earl Hightshoe, at Ashland for sonic time, came over Sunday for a visit with his father, Frank Lapham. Mr. and Mrs. George Bobbitt were callers at the Fred Ethrege home last Sunday afternoon, driving over from their heme in Lincoln for a short visit with their friends here. Mrs. Dora Leesley. Frank Lapham and sons, Lloyd and Foster, and Rev. W. E. Goings were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lapham, at Waverly on Monday evening. Mr. and Mrs. William Buck and children left the first of last week for Grand Forks, North Dakota, where Mrs. Buck and children will spend the wintor with her relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Vern Shepler and son of Springfield came over Saturday af ternoon to visit her mother, Mrs. Ruth Dyer and other relatives. They re turned home Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Kelley and son, of Walnut, Illinois, drove out in their car to Greenwood on last Friday and have been enjoying a visit with Grandfather J. M. Mefford for a few days. Messrs and Mesdames W. P. Bailey cr.d Lyle Bailey, of Ashland, were guests for the day last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Wright, where they all enjoyed a very pleas ant visit and an excellent dinner. Mr. and Mrs. N. O. Coleman and Lawrence were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Carnes and the Misses Rhoda and Myar of Lincoln on Sunday. Mrs. Carnes is improving slowly, being able to be up and around. J. P. Mefford and daughter, Lovina, of Kansas City, were visiting in Greenwood, guests at the home of John M. Mefford, father and grand father, over last Sunday. Miss Lovina remained for a two weeks' visit with the grandfather. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Haney, William Haney and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Ellison, all of Omaha, were guests for the day last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Etheredge, where all en joyed a very fine visit, they being friends of long standing. W. E. Draper, accompanied by John1 Meyers, drove to Kimball, Nebraska, a weke ago Sunday, where Mrs. Mey ers visited relatives. They returned home Wednesday and Mr. Draper brough back a truck load of potatoes for sale in this vicinity. The potato crop there was quite good this year Mrs. Fred W. Ethredge was called to Omaha recetly, because of the ser ious illness of her son, who was in an Omaha hospital, where he underwent an operation for appendicitis and where he is now reported as getting along very nicely. The mother is re maining with the son, following the operation. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hoenshell took a ride in the country last Sunday, driving to Verdon, where they visit ed for a short time and later went to Pawnee City, where they visited over night with their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hoenshell and on Mon day morning returned via Nebraska City, bringing with them a quantity of apples. In all they enjoyed a very nice time. Entertained Pinochle Club Mrs. Ray McNurlin entertained the Louisville pinochle club last Thurs day evening in honor of Mr. McNur lin's birthday. The time was spent in playing pinochle, with four tables of players present. A delicious luncheon was served at the close of the even ing. Entertained at Dinner Superintendent and Mrs. H. E. Warren entertained the teachers of the Greenwood schools at a six o'clock dinner at their home last Thursday evening. Those present included the Misses Helen Marvin, Leonora Lar- sen, Tnelma Leesley and rreda ou zel and Mr. Lee Knolle. A most pleas ant time was reported by all. Stopped Here for Visit Mrs. Gillman and two sons, Ralph and George, and Mrs. Newton, all of Chicago, and Mrs. Cina Hall, of Mc pherson, Kansas, stopped in Green wood last Thursday for a few days' visit with Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ilillis. They were on their way home after a trip that had taken them through the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kan sas, Wyoming and Nebraska. They left for Chicago early Saturday morn ing. Pleasant Birthday Surprise Mrs. Lyman Mowry gave a surprise party last Saturday afternoon, Sep tember 29th, at her home in honor of her sister, Mrs. Mary Landon, of Omaha. The occasion was in honor of Mrs. Landon's birthday. A very pleasant afternoon was spent visiting together and with fancy work. Later a delicious lunch was served by the hostess, a large birthday cake being among the edibles provided. Those present included Mesdames A. E. Leesley, Elmer Mathis, C. I). Fulmer, Lee Walradt and William Kelley. Entertained the Guild The Guild of the M. E. church was pleasantly entertained on the after noon of September 25th by Mrs. L. M. Mowry at her home. There was a large crowd in attendance. The regu lar business meeting of the society was held, after which the rest of the time was spent in visiting and with their fancy work. The hostess served a delicious lunch at the close of the afternoon. The Guild will meet again on Tues day afternoon of this week, with Mrs. Frank Hurlbut and Mrs. I. A. San born as hostesses. Boreas, Society Entertained The Dorcas society was pleasantly entertained Friday afternoon, Sep tember 28, by Mrs. Arthur Anderson and Mrs. Gus Brockhaga as hostesses. There was a large crowd present. Dur ing the business meeting it was decid ed to hold a "Sunset Social" on Tues day, October 23rd, open to the pub lic. Further announcement concern ing this will be made later. I ne rest or tne alternoon was spent quilting and visiting, after which delicious refreshments were served by the hostess. The next meeting will be held on Friday of this week, October 12th, Mrs. Surprise Birthday Party Mrs. W. F. Willis and Mrs. W. L. Ilillis gave a surprise party at the Willis heme on Friday evening of last week for Mrs. Mabel Hamilton, in honor of her birthday. There were eight tables of guests present, the evening being spent playing pinochle. Mrs. Richards, of Ashland, won the rcyal prize for ladies and Mrs. Gus Gustafson won the low prize. J. S. Gribble won the royal prize fo:: men and B. Gill the low prize. Delicious refreshments were served at the close of the evening. The guests presented Mrs. Hamil ton with a beautiful handbag as a gift in honor of the occasion. Sunday, October 14 Court J. Lemcn Poorly Mr. C. J. Lemon, who for the past half a century has been one of the leading spirits of western Cass county, in looking after the best interests of this section of the state, and who has ever done his best fcr everyone in this section, is at this time making his home in Ashland, where he has re tired after a half hundred years of hard labor, and while he Is not re tired from his life's work, he is not enjoying the best of health, but is sure pleased to see and hear from his many friends whom he made during the years he was endeavoring to make this portion of the state the best in which to live. Anything: in Dates We Wonder Some two weeks ago. Sophus Peter sen, the village blacksmith, was out fishing on Salt Creek and at that time secured a nice quantity of carp, there not being any other variety of fish in his catch. Last Sunday lie went out again on a similar trip and this time secured all bullheads. He is wonder ing why this difference in catch on different dates. Can any one answer? Nebraska Pioneer Dies at Lincoln James Greer, who for more than a half century resided in Cass county, and who was in poor health for some time past, being confined to the Bail ey Sanitarium at Lincoln the last few weeks, died there last Sunday. Mr. Greer was 72 years old and had spent the past 52 years in Nebraska. Born in Ireland, he came to this country when a young man. He was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic lodge and the Eastern Star here. Surviving him are Mrs. Betty Clarke and Mrs. Mary James Smith, sisters, and Robert and William Greer, brothers, of Ireland; Miss Mag gie Greer, sister, cf Alvo, and Mrs. Hannah Anderson, sister, of Hacken sack. New Jersey, and Henry Greer, brother, of Alvo. The funeral was held at the home in Cass county at 1:30 last Wednes day, followed by an additional ser vice at the Methodist church in Greenwood at 2 in the afternoon, be ing conduc ted by the Rev. J. J. Scheaff of Lincoln and Rev. Bruce Gibson, pastor of the Greenwood Methodist eh urch. Interment was in the beautiful Greenwood cemetery. The pallbear ers were selected from among his old friends and neighbors, being William J. Althouse, Ivan Althouse, John Sny der, Walter Collins, William Kitzel and William G. Hoffman. In Greenwood 22 Years October 1st, 1912, E. L. McDonald, who had been in the employ of the Burlington railroad in their train service, running through Greenwood, being dissatisfied with working for someone else, came here and pur chased a small meat market on the north side where he entered business for himself and a short time there after the business had grown to where he found it necessary to seek other and better quarters. His initial ad vent into business here was under a debt of some $700, which he paid off as the business allowed. There were good times and others not so good, but Mac stuck to the business, treat ing everybody the very best and by dint of hard work and application to the business, he succeeded and now owns the store and also has some five pieces of property in Greenwood, 130 acres of excellent farm land near town with feed yards and the stock of goods which" comprise the store, all accumulated by close application to business and taking care of the interests of his friends and patrons. Mac says to his friends "Good morn ing." we are hoping you are well and prosperous and say this is not the worst town on the map either. Come, let us all try and make it the very best. Such is the spirit that wins. Ladies Met at Ashland The ladies of the L. C. C. kensing ton met last Tuesday evening with their member. Mrs. Harry Schroeder. at the J. C. The ladies enjoyed a very fine after noon together with cards and visiting to while away the time and a very delightful luncheon was served at the close of the very pleasant afternoon. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Harry Schroeder, C. W. Newkirk and Ralph Clymer. Held Family Reunion On September 27th, John M. Mef ford was passing his 86th birthday anniversary and with a large number of the members of the family was celebrating the occasion, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bauer, the latter a daughter of Mr. Mefford. There were relatives present from three different states and a most de lightful time was had, with an excel lent dinner provided. Mr. Mefford has resided in Green wood for more than sixty years and has a host of friends here who are pleased to extend to this honorable gentleman their best wishes. There were gathered here for the occasion the following members of the family: J. P. Mefford and La vona, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Kelly and son, Jess Chapin, Mr. and Mrs. How ard Gartner, S. E. Mefford and son, Mrs. Lela Rung and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Laughlin, son and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. Clay Hanson and son. G. G. Mefford. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kirk and family, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Iloman and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bauers and Uncle John himself a total of forty. All departed at a late hour wish ing Uncle John many more happy birthdays. RENEWS CAMPAIGN Mr. J. R. Reedt-r, one of the suc cessful nominees on the non-poiitical ballot in the primary for county superintendent, has announced that he is renewing his campaign look ing toward the general election No vember 6 and will make a complete canvass of the county within the next five weeks. Entering the primary race com paratively unknown outside of Platts mouth, Mr. Reedcr made a splendid race polling oveV 1300 votes. This coupled with the very effective cam paign which he made and the many friends which h- won for himself over the county, he states, makes the outlook very bright for his election November 6th. During his long period of service in the high school. Mr. Reeder has won a place for himself as an out standing teacher is the class room and as a capable and dependable ad ministrator. He holds a Nebraska First Grade and a Nebraska Life Cer tificate which entitle him to teach in any school in the state, which are evi dences of his training and exper ience. IN CRITICAL CONDITION Advices received here by the rela tives announce that A. C. Tulene for many years a resident here, is in critical condition at his home at Orang California, where he has made his homo in recent years. Mr. Tulene has been a sufferer from heart trouble for a number of years and in recent weeks has been in very criti cal condition. Mr. Tulene is n brother of W. A. Tulene of this city, who visited the brother several nnnths ago while in California called by the fatal illness of another brother, Wesley Tulene. VISITS IN THE CITY Mrs. Robert H. Patton of this city has had the pleasure of a visit from her sister, Mrs. Nancy Burger, ot Berkley, California, who stopped here on her way east to visit the sister and family whom she had not seen for some time. Mrs. Burger from this city goes to Chicago to visit her brother. Dr. William Walker and enjoy the last days of the Century of Progress exposition. She also ex pects to travel in the south to visit relatives and friends before return ing to her home on the west coast. RETURN FROM SYNOD Dr. II. G. McClusky, who ha: been at the synod meeting of the Pres byterian church held at Superior has returned home. The synod proved very interesting and with leaders of the church over the state in attend ance. Mrs. McClusky accompanied her husband to visit with friends at Nelson. Now on this 22nd day of Septem ber. 1934, there was presented to the court the petition of W. H. Coffelt, administrator of the estate of Martha S.
