An almost workless world within fifteen years perhaps it could be called the "push-button" era- is the inventors' dream. All the works says Albert Burns of Oakland, Calif., will be done in an infinitessi mal fraction of the time now requir ed, machinery turning the trick. Burns is the grand impressario of invention, president of the National Inventors' congress meeting here. The congress has as its idea the find ing of markets for those who think up something to make man's burden lighter. The trouble is, he mused, that most of them want a million dollars or nothing for their devices. Still oth ers have ideas but no money to make them realities. That's why the con vention will discuss, among other things, proposals to have the federal government finance invention and discovery. AN APPRECIATION I wish to thank my friends over Cass county for their support and interest taken in my candidacy at the primary election. I shall always feel very grateful to them. J. E. LANCASTER. As.in Dreiser Novei y V i. f' I ,w , K I? I j? -if- 1 Robert Edwards Twenty-one, - a church-goer and "nice young man", Robert EcU 'wards, above,: of Edwardsville, Pa., is held as the slayer of a sweetheart, Freda McKechnie, by black-jacking her and leaving her body to float on Harvey's lake, near Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Doctors said Miss McKechnie was an ex pectant mother. Entrance into the case of Margaret Crain, of East Aurora, N. Y., who consid ered Edwards her fiance, makes the story parallel Theodore Dreiser's famous noveL "An American Tragedy"- COST OF ROOSEVELT TRIP Washington. President Roose velt's trip to Honolulu and back cost him less than $400. Anyone else, traveling in similar style, would have paid about $150,000. His ride on the cruiser Houston from Annapolis to Portland, via Honolulu, didn't cost anybody anything. Salaries of the crew would have continued and the ship would have been steaming some where, anyhow, so the navy figures there was no extra cost going to Honolulu. A private citizen couldn t hire a battleship for his use, let alone two destroyers as convoys. He might, however, charter an ocean liner and a couple of smaller boats to go along to Hawaii for $100,000 or so. Telegraph executives estimated that official wireless messages to.and from the Houston totaled about 150, -000 words. That didn't cost Mr. Roosevelt anything either, because he used the navy's wireless facilities. A train awaited -President Roose velt at Portland. He rode home in a private car, but all he had to pay was $180.42 for two fares and $111 to the Pullman company for a draw ing room. To hire a special train from Portland to Washington, would cost anybody else $11,364.10. On most of his stops, he was in vited out to lunch. His dinners and breakfasts aboard the train cost him regular dining car rates. A generous estimate of the cost of meals is $50. Another $50 would take care of his incidental expenses. DAWES BANK CAN PAY OUT Washington. Chairman Jesse Jones expects the RFC to collect all of its 90 million dollar loan to the Central Republican Bank and Trust company if it takes ten years. Al ready, he said, $58,211,937 in prin cipal and 3 millions in interest was in arrears on the loan made in June, 1932, and due six months later. But he added: "We've collected more than 29 millions, and that isn't so bad." The Central Republican bank has long been known as the "Dawes bank" because it was once headed by former Vice President Charles G. Dawes. The loan to the institution, Jones asserted, was "well secured" by "good collateral." "There remains," he explained, "either 14 or 28 millions in securi ties as well as other substantial property. We've got every bit of it in our hands. There's quite enough to secure the balance." Jones said some of the "substantial property" consisted of notes by Chicago mer chants and businessmen, adding that "we consider these good," too. The liquidation process, the chairman as serted, would continue until it is completed. RECEIPTS OF SILVER Washington. Receipts of newly mined silver at the mints for the week ending Aug. 10 were reported by the treasury as 254,457 ounces, bringing total receipts to that date to 10,671,000. Gold imports amount ed to $27,910,867 with acquisition of secondary gold totaling $1,771, 491 and newly mined gold $1,655,-155. NOTICE OF PROBATE In the County Court of Cass coun ty, Nebraska.
