One of the pleaaant episodes ol life, is making plans to spend money that you never get. :o: Gasoline price advances always Eeem to happen just before spring coaxes the motorists out on the roads. :o: David Lloyd George would nave England adopt our NRA. But do they have any Hugh Johnsons over mere, or would they borrow ours? :o: A cerious and hard-working scien tist has found that when a bee stings you it uses twenty-two muscles. We forget how many muscles a person has, but when he has been stung lie u.:es virtually all of them. :o: We wish it had been made clearer, in the account of Al Smith's disagree ment with Publisher Frank A. Tich cr.or over the administration's avia tion policy, whether Mr. Tichenor's criticism was too violent or not vio lent enough for Mr. Smith's taste. :o: It appears that the settlement of the motor car strike was pretty simple, after all. When the manufac turers and the laborers couldn't agree on who should drive, the President put 'em both in the front seat and took over the back seat driving job himself. :o: A new sleeping powder has just been invented. It produces sleep in twenty seconds or less. It is an il logical time to bring out a sleep pro ducer. Spring days are at hand and something to awaken folks and keep them that way would be much more appropriate. :o: Probably one reason for college professors who have been transplant ed to Washington feel slightly handi capped is because they are unable to give 'ptlddlc tjiiizzes 'over the1 subject matter they have been teaching. In stead it appears that they themselves may be quizzed. :o: A Cleveiana grocer whose store v.as robbd wa3 beaten and bound with hi3 own shoestrings and left lying on the floor for five hours. That is the only good time on record for a shoestring to break, but of course it wouldn't. -'A fine 4 C J4, Kif fan li 'jm i-jthu roefwl I J t. 1m : li ..v., -v- -easmssL ire& MT- ... ;--.-. . - HARNESSING THE SUN At the geophysical observatory of Tashent, Uzbekistan, the soviet scien tists have set up a boiler which is heated by the sun's rays. So far as we can determine from the meager description that has reached this country, the apparatus serves the prosaic purpose of heating water for laundries and for outdoor bathtubs. The underlying principle of this method of harnessing the sun proves to be simple enough. Also very old. The water trickles in a thin film un der glass. From the "boiler" it flows into the bathtub. Boiling water can hardly be expected; yet it is warm enough for its purpose. What we need is a trap to catch the sun. The first man to invent one was John Ericsson, who built the Monitor. He devised a huge concave mirror which reflected and concen trated the sun's rays on a blackened boiler at the focus, and which me chanically turned to follow the sun. Ericsson generated steam in hid boil er and succeeded in driving pumps and other machines. The late Frank Shuman modified Ericsson's plan by causing water to fllow in a thin layer in a long glass covered trough on which concave mir rors concentrated the sun's rays. Thus he managed to drive a pump and to irrigate land in Egypt. What the soviet scientists have announced is, therefore, nothing but Shuman's old plant, and this on a very modest scale. New York Times. :o: We have but one life here and what come3 after it we cannot with cer tainty say, but it pays, no matter what comes after it, to accomplish something in thi3 life and not have a dreamy time. :o: SL Paul staged a hcrse and buggy parade Saturday and fifty genuine; horses were in line after a vigorous scouring of the countryside. Twenty thousand people gathered to see the sight. :o: Tariffs and dollars are intimately related, requiring skill and quick de cision in their management. The study of economics requires mora and higher mathematics than the text books have yet rendered available. time to start ifcs old Yv LARGE AMOUNT OF CORN SEALED IN CASS COUNTY The report of the number or bush els of corn sealed in Cass county as revealed by the figures at the office of County Clerk George R. Sayles at the close of business March 30th, shows that 2,043,S14 bushels had been sealed. The. largest single sealing was that of Carl Walter and Jona3 Meierjur gen, of near Murdock, who have 13, 000 bushels. The corn reduction plan has been accepted by farmers all over Cass county and will greatly reduce the acreage of this crop the coming year. New tars or old, the attitude of the telephone pole i3 unchanged. It holds fast to the principle of self defense. :o: Reform wave: Congress is taking rambling out of the stock-exchange, and the city councii of Garnett, Kas., has forbidden penny-matching by the boys on the corner. A young woman who worked in a Brooklyn hardware store at 1,203 metal objects under twenty-four classifications recently, and had to go to a hospital for an operation. Ev erything is fixed up now, however; the girl will recover, and the hard ware store can now begin to make a profit again. feudl" ill jMilfZy- Item '-' for Choice Farm Loans Immediate Closing SEE earl S.
