From W'etlnesday's Dally
The members of the Plattsmouth
fire department Tuesday demon
strated their Spartan courage as they
battled for practically the entire day
'the fire that eventually destroyed the
i Paul Wohlfarth home on North Sixth
(street.
Tne ngures . 01 ine nremen re
sembled icebergs as they stood hour
after hour with only brief reliefs,
battling with the elements of de
struction, the water that fell on
them turning to ice in an instant,
while the bitter and strong wind
beat unmercifully - on the faces of
the men. No highly paid or trained
department fought more courageously SI
.a n a "J a -a . . ' '
tnan tnese iccai men who naa lam
down their usual daily vocations to
join in the fight to save a home and
property of one of their fellow citi
zens.
The firemen were served hot cof
fee throughout the day at the August
Cloidt home near the scene of the
fire which proved a real boon to the
cold and tired firemen and a fire was
arranged in a shed at which the fire
men were able to snatch a few mom
ents during the day to try and dry
their ice covered clothing.
A large number suffered frost bit
ten fingers and cars a3 the result
of the hard fight, while Fulton Har
ris, civil engineer and son of Mr.
and Mrs. Creed Harris of Union.
was probably the most severely in
jured by the cold. The face of Mr.
Harris was almost frozen and it was
necessary to have him taken to the
office of a physician for treatment.
Carl Ofe, who just recently recover
ed from an Illness was also one of
those who suffered severely from the
cold and had to be taken from the
scene of the fire.
The firemen were again called to
the scene of the fire last night when
a blaze oroKe out jn the ruins of the
Wohlfarth homo and which was ex
tinguished to prevent spreading to
other properties.
The members of the department
last night were u entertained at a
lunch at the dining room of the
Brown cafe and where the regular
monthly meeting was held.

MAY REMOVE TELEPHONES
From Wednesday's Daily
The board of county commissioners
at their meeting today had up for
consideration the matter of the re
moval of telephones from the offices
at the court house. There are ten
telephones now in: use to serve the
offices and while they are a con
venience to persons wishing to se
cure information, the commissioners
feel that they can save a substantial
sum each month.
The question of the maintenance
of the telephone at the office of the
sheriff or using the telephone at the
jail for general business of the of
fice where communication is neces
sary is one of the matters under con
sideration. The county officials have offered
no objection to the removal of the
telephones which are largely a mat
ter of convenience to the patrons of
the various offices who can avoid a
personal visit to the court house
many times by calling by telephone.
Advertising will keep the wheels
of business turning, even In "de
pression times." Don't overlook
that fact, Mr. Merchant.

Returns
Midland Meet
Wliile Losing in Opening Bound Local
Debaters Have line .exper
ience Hearing Contests. ,
The high school debate team, com
posed of Pauline Hoschar. George
Adam. William . Wetenkamp, and
George Luschinsky, together with
their coach, Mr. Pigley, took' part in
the Annual Midland College Tour
nament last week, hi which thirty-
two teams were entered.
Plattsmouth debated Tilden, Ne
braska In the first round and were
defeated, and then lost the second de
cision to Wakefield In the consola
tion period. Then in order to get as
much benefit from the many debaters
nresent. as possible, the local team
held two practice debates with Fre
mont and listened to i many others
with the result that they acquired a
lot of Information and help wnicn
will be rery valuable to them In ful
ture debates. Mr. Flgley began this
year without a single experienced de
bater, as the members of last year's
championship team .were . lost by
graduation. But despite these facts,
the Plattsmouth ktCud made a fine
showing in the tournament, and will
no doubt develop a strong team be-
for the season Is over.'
Arrangements are being made to
bring ' debating teams representing
ihe University of 'South. Dakota and
the University of Nebraska, here on
March 31 to debate "The Cancellation
of the War Debts." .
