Meanwhile, there is no dis- position in any of the French political groups to lessen the demands of France at the naval conference. Even Chautemps. the radical Socialist. whose premiership lasted but five days, supported the demands of the delegation sent to Lor.d.m by his predecessor. The world will be disposed to c. n sider that the naval parley is exactly when the Young plan was before t ;e conference made up their minds t'..at they could not bluff one another. There is no cheer at London, but it is too early to be discouraged. In a matter of such momentous concc" n to all the naval Powers as their ovn security the difficulties could not he exaggerated. There are in the coun tries represented at the conference elements which, like the Chicago Tribune, are opposed to any conces sions. In France no other sentiment is articulate. Rear Admiral Hilary jP. Jones, one of the two chief naval experts of the American delegation. lis said to resent so strongly the con- cessions offered by our delegation that he is withdrawing and return- States . as a patriotic duty. j If resentment of the conference and ?ts aspirations is so strong in our own 'country, which has less to fear from 'other nations than any other country in the world, it is easy to understand the apprehension of Englishmen, '.Italians and Japanese. It is the will of nations to disarm that is being put to the test at London. BRIDGE AND I1TFERI0RITY We learn from Dr. Alfred Adler, father of tbe "inferiority complex." that a desire to conquer is a symptom of that ailment. Thus bridge is the ! resort of tim!d souls who are forever (attempting to satisfy a striving for superiority. "If you see a bridge jj player who has won," says the Doc, you j:oti3e a nice expression oi superiority on his face." Why a de sire of conquest is a sign of inferior ity is one of those psycho-analytical puzzles that involves much subtiety of thought. In the end. we suppose. Dr. Adler will convict of the infer iority complex Napoleon, Caesar, Leonides, Catherine of Itussia and Alexander the Great, to say nothing of Jack Dempsey and Art Shires. But if Dr. Adler came all the way from Vienna to tell us that a winning bridge player pockets his profit with a smile of superiority lie is certainly carrying psychological coals to New castle.
