Head the Journal Want-Ads. Social Work ers Flower Club of Community Very Interesting Story of This Club Given at the Fifteenth Anniversary Meeting One day during the winter of lf14, some of the friends of Mrs. Peter Mumm gathered at her home for the purpose of quilting a quilt, and while there. Mrs. Mary J. Taylor suggested that the ladies of the neighborhood, formed a club for the purpose of doing all the good we could, in a systematic way, as well as sponsor ing good fellowship among neigh bors, and this seemed to he the motto by which she governed her own life. Therefore this little hand of ten women met again on March If1. If 14 at Mrs. Taylor's home and formed krules and regulations as well as elect ing officers for the newly formed club. The secretary's reports of these early meeting, seems to be very mea ger, until the following November, after which very concise reports are recorded. As on one of these ladies had be longed to a club of this sort before they began very haltingly and timid ly, but doiing their best at all times to cheer the downhearted, assist In case of illness and offer assistance in anv case of need. The first few years, we had very littie money in the treasury for as sistance as our dues were very small, in fact only five cents per month, and we occasionally quilted a quilt for sale, as well as manage a social affair that would would enlarge out treas ury. Even if our funds were very limit d. we tried to ma.ko up by cheer fully helping pirsnnally. the best we could, altho there isn't a doubt, that at times, some one has felt that we might have done better, or at b-ast differently, but surely v have tried to do as nearly right as we know and if m-taks have been made, we are but human. We thought we were doing quite wt 11 by relieving want and distress in (air own community, but when war was declared we exerted our- selves a little more, a; foirt kits for each hoy from our vicinity. More than twenty :rent for the materials. id mat com- who enlisted dollars war then we made tltem all alike, according to specifica t ions. Finding that we might be of more arsis' anoe by taking up regular Red Cr-'ss work, we deided that was the tiling for us to do. consequently we worked with a will of work was always and oud ouota re:.it v when the call for it was in a tie. .Just after the war a call was mad" for our chili to donate money for The starving children of China, but oud .treasury was to depleted by the exactions of the war. that we could give only ?3 0. Then came a call for donations to Nebraska Children'. Home for which wo gave i In all ;il). nit loo people have ! .ioi: c d our ranks at differ nt times, ibut pome ht've mover) away, and some l"r::ve passed so tho great beyond, for ! wi it h 1 would pay tribute, in the 1'intn of the club, which now com j prices about 2 willing workers. Thirteen of our loved members jhave gone on before, and such as we i miss thern. our Joss is but their gain. ! You may not all of you be able i to recall all of these names but the j fact r mains, that they, at one time. worked should"!- to shoulder with, jus. and I will enumerate each, that ; you may offer tribute with me. i Mrs. W. A. Taylor, our organizer, land friend of all: Airs. W. V. Hut ch ison. Fuming a very lovable member; Mrs. . quiet, itnas C. A. Harvey, who did her best uncomplainingly: Mrs. Feter Mumm. one of the loved charter members: Mrs. Wm. Gilmorc. an incentive to better more peaceful living: Mrs. Sarah Goehenour. who always cheered us when the path was rough; Mrs. John Van Horn, always doing all things possible for the club; Mrs. A. E. Smith, one of the oldest and respected members; Mrs. M. Hausladeii. with us but a short time, but ever faithful; Mr.". M. G. Stava. who seemed to appreciate the club the most of all: Mrs. James Lee, whose pleasant face was an inspir ation to all: Mrs. Elbert Queen, who could not be with u.; often because of th" busy life te led, did what she could for the good of the club. A further tribute io these (bar souls, is suggested in this little poem: I'd like toe the sort of friend, that you have been to nit-: I'd like to bo the help, that you were always glad to be; I'd like to mean as much, each min ute of the day. As you have meant, dear friends of mint-, to me along the way And that is why I'm wishing now, I could repay A portion of the gladness that you've strewn from day to day, And could I have just one more wish, this only would it be. That I might be the sort of friend that you have been to me. The Children's Savings Home at Omaha, was benefitted by $10 from our treasury and when the American Legion decided to build a commun ity building in Plattsmouth, we also donated toward that. Soon after this, the terrible flood of the lower Mississippi valley drove thousands" of people from their homes, and ve added our mite of $10 toward their relief. Possibly we were a little selfish, when we bought trays, cups and spoons to be used at club gatherings, but we have derived a vast amount of satisfaction in their possession. Another move that might he call ed selfish, was when we decided not to send all of our money away from home, so finding that the Horning cemetery association could use some extra money, in brushing up the ap pearance of the cemetery we donated $23 for this purpose. In all this time we were managing to send cut flowers or their equiva lent to the seriously ill lu our vic inity, and in these past .tteen years we have tried to follow the teach ings of our organizer, and be as gen erous and kindly as she would have us be, and considering the number of people who have been benefitted in various ways by our organiza tion, we feel that we have done the best we could with the little capital at our disposal. Something more tha.n $S00 hav ing been used to help brightt n some of the dark corners of this life. I-I"I"I-I-X"M-I-:-I-!
