Xorri.s of Xebraska for President. While without significance so far as the coming presidential campaign ia rnnr-erned. that expression has verv 1 . . . jwhen asked by his son what he did great significance as a commentary J ii;, t. t in Inp war, always replies, "Oh, I upon American politics. It is known J 1 . . . ... . ... , .. guess you mean the Civil War. Well, that Senator Xorris, notwithstanding' . ... , . ne IS I lie siic-tenmn "i ine laie sen ator La Follette as leader of the pro gressive element in Congress, is well aware of his disqualification for the presidency. The reason was admir ably stated in an article reprinted in last Sunday's Post-Disp;itch from the Atlantic Monthly. Senator Xorris is a Jeffersonian in that he favors the rule of the people and is against government for the privileged He wants tiO make the whole people the Jbeneficiaries of government. A Re publican, he ia by this Jeffersonian measurement tho best Democrat in Congress. But our politics, as James Truslow Adams pointed out in the article from the Atlantic, are Hamiltonian. Mr. Adams says we preach Jeffersonian and practice Hamilton. So we do. There is not an institution which Jefferson secured to the republic, or an ideal to which ha gave application in it, that is not either underfoot or about to go underfoot in the United States. Hamilton believed he wanted to put the Government in the hands of the privileged minority. Jef ferson wanted the people to rule. He was afraid of the aristocratic minor ity, afraid of Big Business, afraid of predatory wealth. He made the Am erican Government the world's first practical application of the great democratic ideal that all men are created equal. That Senator Xorris. who believes as Jefferson believed, is disqualified for the presidency by that belief shows how far we have deserted Jeffersonism. Hamiltonism is in the saddle, and woe be unto him who does not believe in it. St. Louis Post-Dispatch. :o: END OF THE BIRGER GANG The wages of crime were graph ically computed in the Post-Dispatch yesterday. A photograph of Birger's gang taken in 1926 was reproduced. Sixteen men, armed with rifles, pistols and submachine guns, posed for that photograph in front of Charlie Birger's roadhouse "Shady Rest." A belligerent crowd it was. the terror of southern Illinois. At the time the gang was at the height of its power, levying tribute upon gamblers and bootleggers, intimidating officers of the law and killing its enemies. What has happened to these 16 tough gangsters? Their leader, Char lie Birger, has just been hanged. His chief lieutenant. Art Xewman, the smart gambler, is serving a lifen sen tence. Rado Millich has been hang ed for murder of his fellow-gangster. Ward Jones. Steve George was mur dered and burned to death in the fire which destroyed "Shady Rest."
