FARM BUREAU NOTES i
Copy for this Department
! furnished by County Agent
T A i A i f .
Cost of Poisoning Gophers.
The Cass County Farm Bureau
and the Bureau of Biological Su--'
vey have proved that the cost of
poisoning gophers is less than one
cent per acre. Two sections were
poisoned and found that one man !
could poison one section a day. allow- j
ing the man $3 for work and 50c
for poison and bait, the total isj
$3.50, less than one cent per acre, i
About three quarts of bait are used.
The poison used was a compound
of Strychnine Alkaloid, Saccharin,
Baking Soda which is sold by the
farm bureau for 20 cents a box :
which is enough to make one gal-;
Ion of poison bait. Sweet potatoes!
and carrots were used. I
shipped from Cass " county and
slaughtered, have been retained be
cause of Tuberculosis. .There were
17G6 hogs shipped to the Kansas
City market up to March 1. Not one
was retained and no legion of the
disease was found. Of the 4.SS81
shipped to Omaha, only two -were
found to have legion of tuberculo
sis. Of the counties that are . ac
credited in Nebraska, the premium
paid on hogs from these counties in
March was 3,555. For January.
February and March $9,935. Does
it pay to have an accredited county?

Whv Alfalfa Winter Kills.
I have found in traveling over
the county in the last two weeks,
that such alfalfa seeded last spring
and fall winter killed badly. Un
hardy and unadapted seed seems to
be the main cause of all the trouble,
altho late fall seeding has probab
ly caused some of it.
I believe that Cass county farm
ers will be interested in some of
the latest information along the
line of unhardy seed. For the past
two or three years the agricultural
college at Lincoln has been doing
a lot of testing of alfalfa seed of
different varieties and from different
sources.
It is surprising to most of us to
know that an average for the past
6 years we have been Importing
about 8 million pounds of alfalfa
see, this coming chiefly from Argen
tine, Italy, Spain and Africa. This
is about one-fourth or one-fifth of
all the seed used in the United
States each year. Tests show that
the imported alfalfa seed is not
hardy and winterkills badly.There
is no question but that a lot of this
imported seed has been and still is
getting into Nebraska.
Another source of poor, unhardy
seed is from the southwestern states
in this country. Arizona is an im
portant alfalfa seed producing state
but seed from there has killed
practically 100 per cent in testing
at Lincoln and in tests in other
parts of Nebraska.
Many folks have asked me about
Grimm and Cossack and Baltic al
falfa seed. These varieties are call
ed variegated because the blossoms
vary from the ordinary purple to
yellow and almost white. The vari
egated alfalfa varieties are more
hardy. At Lincoln, however, com
mon alfalfa has proven very satis
factory, and there has been no ap
parent difference between it and the
Grimm and Cossack. For average
conditions the average alfalfa from
this stat or from free states with
equally severe ' climatic conditions
should prov satisfactory. Grimm
and Cossack alfalfa seed is more
costly than common alfalfa but may
be worth the extra cost where
farmers want to escape any possible
winterkilling. Farmers who are go
ing to buy alfalfa seed for this year
should insist on getting hardy seed.
