If any departed spirit cares more for $5,000 than for even a few min utes of time in the region where it now abides, no matter which one, it can pick up that amount right off the bat by merely returning to earth and making itself known to the pub lishers of the Scientific American. This offer does not include depart ed spirits which were banished by the Volstead act. Even in New York, just before Christmas, they were not offering quite that much for such spirits in small lots. It would take a whole gallon to cost that much, ex clusive of the fine and the funeral expenses. "' The offer is made only for the de parted spirits of human beings, the idea of the Scientific American being to prove or disprove all the beliefs of spiritualists, both amateur and pro fessional, by this one swashing swipe of its sword at the glummy Gordian knot. This causes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to rise up on his hind legs and emit a protest. Such an offer will not attract sincere spiritualists, he as? serts. but will attract a horde of fak irs. And, no matter whether he is right or wrong in his belief in spirit ualism, Sir Arthur certainly is right in that. - What will any self respecting spir it care for $5,000? The first thing- folks are supposed to learn after they shuffle off is that the most wasteful thing-they did in life was striving to accumulate money. They find that Charon runs one passenger line on which no tip ping and "positively no gratitudes" really mean something. They can't buy any reserved seats from St. Peter; or, if they pass through the door over which, according to Dante, is written 'A11 hope abandon, ye who enter here," they are supposed to at once begin regretting that they ever had any but the most honestly and aruously earned money. They not only are believed to realize wealth and all it brings are but childish toys, but to pity their de luded friends in the world they left behind. So how are they going to be appealed to by an offer' of $5,000, cither for their own use or that of their friends? About the only chance the'.Scien- ific American's offer has of bring ng out anything but fakirs is for ome departed Potash or Perlmutter linging to the acquisitive faculty even after death, to come back and cop that $5,000 for the benefit of "the firm."
