Nebraska voter have a choice pre
sented them between two candidates
for United States senator, one of
whom was selected in the primaries
last July by a clear majority of the
voters of his party, while the other
owes his nomination to a small tain-)
jority group embracing lers than 30
.'per cent cf the party to which he
'belongs.
j Senator Cilbert M. Hitchcock was?
J voted for In the primaries by 4 6,752
democratic electors, as shown by the
official fienres compiled in the sec
retary of state's office. He carried
every county in the state. :
Ia the case of Mr. Howell, the re-!
publican nominee, he received 40,254 ;
votes in a total of 123. 7S4 east in the?
republican primary, according to thej
secretary of state's tabulation. Ho j
is therefore, the choice of fswer than i
one out of three members of
f his par -
was b o.. t -
ty. In thitry-six counties he
en. and in a nuvaber of these he ran
third, fourth and fifth.
If the Ioi primary law, under
which Col. Smith Brookhart won his
nomination, had been in effect here,
Mr. Howell would not have had enuf
votes to make Llm the party candi
date. The Iowa law requires 35 per
cent of the total party vote to nom
inate, whereas Mr. Howell did not
have even 30 per cent.
Only the fact that the opposition
to him was badly split up enabled
Mr. Howell to grab the republican
nomination for senator. His failure
to get one vote out of three was not
due to his lack of acquaintance, as he
has been more or less frequently on
the ballot.
Senator Hitchcock has gone thru
many political battles and has in
curred some personal enmities, as all
men in public life do. But the demo
cratic men and women of Nebraska
showed that they have confidence in
him by the overwhelming vote they
gave him in the primaries.
This endorsement was a deserved
tribute to his long service in behalf
of the people of Nebraska during the
two terms as senator and two as con
gressman. There are many voters of
other parties who stand ready to add
their endorsement of Senator Hitch
cock in the coming election, which
they had no opportunity of doing in
the primaries. Lincoln Star.

A WILD BLADE
A woman who is S3 years of age
and who wa3 a friend of Abraham
Lincoln is suing for a divorce from
her husband, who is a giddy young
rounder of 73 years. The husband is
forever making dates over the tele
phone and sending flowers to his nu
merous tweethearts. Staying out all
night has become a regular habit
with him and th2 wife say3 she is
getting tired o his wild behavior.
He doesn't want to settle down and
whenever he settles up it Is with her
money. She says she thinks he only
married her for her money. She hap
pened to have 1400,000 and the' hus
band has been dlggnig into the wife's
fortune ever since the union. It was
the husband's sixth marriage and he
says if his present wife obtains her
divorce he will marry again. Here is
a swain who has De Wolf Hopper
locking like a German mark.
r.o:
All together, the republican ad
ministration's false pretense of sav
ings, economies and surplus has turn
ed out to be a painful fabrication,
both for it and the country. If the
truth had been told and faced last
spring, congress could have taken
measures either to obviate or meet
the deficit which was then beginning
but instead of that the administra
tion deliberately withheld the facts
and predicted that there would be a
surplus at the close of the current
fiscal year.
:o:
The republicans everywhere con
cede that C. W. Bryan will be elected
governor. But still Charley is putting
in hi3 best licks everywhere as tho
such conditions did net appear.
