BATES, Publisher SUBSCRIPTION PRICE $2.00 THAT WHICH ENDURETH Labor not for the meat which per- isheth, but for that meat which en durtth until everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. John vi. 27. :o:- Many Chinese women have become distinguished poetesses. :o:- The men with cold feet always pre tend it is a cold head. -:o:- All women's shoes were made without heels prior to 1S25. :o:- Trouble with getting rich quick Is you may get caught quicker. :o:- You can drive dull care away lots easier by singing than by reasoning. -o:o- Two-thirds of the cheese made In the United States comes from Wis consin. :o: The custom of decorating soldiers' graves once a year originated on the battlefield of Gettysburg. Pa. :o:- IIow can charity begin at home these days, when the family is out in the car most of the time. -o:o- Luther Burbank has produced a new peach but we suppose it would j be too much to expect that It hasn't fuzz on it. -o:o- "Story Writer Attacked by Irate Rival in Love" says a headline from Oregon. Apparently the author split an affinity. to: Some day the church organist may jump up to beat a drum and kick the cowbells. But We shall be dead, thank God! -re In the confusion of adjournment the London conference neglected the usual form of fixing the time and place of the next conference. to: The hands off policy in disputes af fecting essential industries has been given a long, thorough trial. It has failed. The public is ready for some thing else. :o: Skirts are lower, but we guess the women haven't heard about it yet, as we used to say of our 100 per cent American grocer when sugar was ru mored to be declining in price. to: More horrors of travel are brought out every day. A California women, on her way home was forced to lay over in Lawrence for several days on aecount of the railroad strike. :o: "No man likes to stay at home all de time." said Uncle Eben. "He wants to git some place where he has a chance of being took serious when he brags a little 'bout hlsself." 4 tot "Congress will be asked to insure fair coal prices." That's a queer task to ask of congress just after It has spent all summer trying to insure unfair prices by means of a tariff bill. :o: Well, it didn't take long for the Bill Hart marriage to run its course, and we are beginning to wonder whether Jack Pickford will deliver Marilynn's Christmas present in per son or through a lawyer. to: We tried so hard to be neutral in the controversy between Mr. and Mrs. William S. Hart, until it was said that Mrs. Hart had on several occasions in public, spoken of two- gun Bill as her cream puff. to: There'll be a world Sunday school convention In Glasgow, Scotland, in 1924, and perhaps those over eager to become delegates should be exam ined carefully to find whether their fervor is religious or thirsty. :o: A Chicago woman asks for a di vorce, .because her husband hasn't taken a bath since 1920. That's just like a woman gets it into her head that she wants something done, and it has to be done right then, or she flies off the handle. to: The editor of the Judge says that magazine favors light wines and l.cer as a "morality measure," and means of freeing the country from the bootleggers. We suspected it was something like that when we heard that Bill White had left the maga zine. PER YEAR EN ADVANCE Golf may not be a disease, but whatever it is, it is contagious. :o:- The poor we shall always have with us, and they have to live. -:o:- What a country this would be, if we could all live without work. :o:- A wise man never laughs at a woman or shoots at a policeman. :o: Russia and Germany are planning, but two heads are better than one if they ache. o:o Answer foolish question patiently. You never know when you may wish to ask one yourself. -:o: An Ohio man lost $10 on a horse race and says he could have bought the horse for $5 more. -o . Funny things happen. A man nam ed Clarence on a Fhiladelphla team is knocking home runs. to: We'd rather be right than presi dent of a railroad or of a railroad men's brotherhood these days. to: We see republicans almost every day who propose to vote for Hitch cock, Bryan and Morehead. paying for the war might be even more burdensome. We might be wear ing spiral puttees while doing it. to: Wish some wireless wizard would devise an amplifier for money; ours still talks too low to be heard very far. -:o:- South California now claims it has discovered a glacier, but we suspect that's just another of those climate rhapsodies. to:- "Strikers and executives make fin al try for peace." We don't like that word final, with everything else looking bad as at present. -:o:- The Atchison Globe's notions is that there should be two ceremonies when a woman marries a man and money at the same time. to: The taxpayers demand relief, and that is one reason why the farmers will not vote the party ticket that endorses the McKelvie code. -o: o- At last a grand jury has been sum moned to investigate the alleged mas sacre at Herrin, 111. There were some grounds for that rumcr, then? :o: Parole boards apparently inke one charitable view that boys will be boys, and curiously that seen.s to be the view of the boys themselves. to: In the old rhyme, Jill came tumbl ing down the hill after Jack. But Jill, now gone into business for her self, plods up the hill for the jack. to: Jud Tunkins says every man is en titled to his own opinion, but most of U3 would rather get into an argu ment than enjoy peaceable posses sion. :o: What is described a3 a wave of fi nancial depression has struck Ger many as a result of the failure of the London economic conference. Before the news came, We suppose, Germany was enjoying a financial boom. o : n What expert chauffeurs some of the newspaper editors would make We allude to those who are more or less successfully trying to steer a middle course between the demands of la"bor and the rights of the public to coal and transportation.
