OPENING DAY OF
OLD SETTLERS' RE
UNION A SUCCESS
large Number Present From Cass
and Otoe Counties to Renew
Acquaintances of Years.
I From Saturday s Dally
The opening day of the Old Sot
tiers' reunion at Union yesterday,
was one of the best in recent years
: and a creat many were nresent tr
- jenjoy tne pr0gram and to meet each
, otner in tiie renewal of old times.
The ranks of the old pioneers who
thirty-four years ago promoted the
first reunion, have been very much
depleted but each year the ranks are
filled from the younger generations
who are now becoming the old tim
ers of the county.
There Is no single portion of the
county that has more of the real old
time residents of Cass county than
does Union and there are still many
living in that vicinity who came to
Nebraska in the late sixties and the
early part of the seventies and a
scattering group of the residents who
were here in the day3 before the
Civil war. To these old pioneers the
Old Settlers' reunion is certainly a
rare treat In every way.
At the opening day of the reun
ion the program consisted of address
es by Mrs. Irene C. Buell, city at
torney of Ashland, and one of the
few ladies in the state to be mem-,
bers of the bar, and Attorney W. G.
Kieck of Plattsmouth was also on the
program for an address that he car
ried out in his usual effective man
ner. The dramatic club of Union pre
sented "Our County Cousin," which
was very much enjoyed by the large
and enthusiastic audience.
In the sports program of the day.
i enjoyed by a large and enthusiastic
audience at the ball park.
BRAVELY SAID
A veteran and able republican edi-
tor. M. A. Brown of the Kearney
Hub. writing of the crisi3 In which
xetraska fins Itself. ?av3 in the
.. , .
Lincoln Journal;
"The constitution directs fcow end
by whom the business of the state
shall be administered. The old con
stitution made such provision. The
new constitution is unchanged. Yet
the constitution has been set aside,
and the government of the state has
been stolen from its citizens, and
placed in the hands of a governor
who becomes master over all by vir
tue of his power of appointment, and
is enabled to muster and maintain
at. the expense of the taxpayers an
army of political henchmen who are
responsible only to their chief, and
contemptuous of those who really
feed and clothe them."
These are strong words, yet no
stronger than the situation war
rants. They are brave words, com
ing as they do from a man who has
spent a lifetime in unselfish and de
voted service to the republican par
ty. Mr. Brown concludes his article
thusr
"The determination of. the issue;
for the immediate present, must be
met by the coming state conventions.
If the issue is not determined prop
erly the people have the power to
override it at the polls. Again, be
yond that, the last word for or
against will be the legislature to be
reckoned with next winter. My own
duty is clear, viz., to carry my pro
test against autocratic super-government
to the very last tribunal
where a man and a citizen can be
heard."
