THE RED SOX
PLAY THE FIELD
THE MERCHANTS OF VENICE OR
FLORENCE, OR WHATEVER
IT IS, PLAYED BALL.
PLATTSMOUTH WIN 2 T0 1
Very Neat Game, Though Filled With
Errors "and Striking Good
Plays.
FY!ii Alomhiy's lai!v.
Last Sunday the Rame between the
Red Sox and the Merchants of Flor
ence, was pulled off per the agree
ment, and while we had some of the
regular players off on a vacation,
and others crippled, the j;am which
they put up was one better than that
which the visitors played. We had
a number of slarins errors, which
was only retreaved by brilliant plays
clc-ewhere. In the beginning Stinipson
was a little too strong, but soon
came liiiucr me wire in poou suape.
He walked the first man who made a
. . t i . .
in before the next i!ir.n had been
put out on a fowl . i-oran. amr
having been given his first attempt
ed second, and Ilerold with more
powder in than he had thought. p::t
the ball over Turner on second, and
before Grassman could get it Foran
had successfully navigated with third
and home plate thus making them
a run. the only one during the en
tire game, and this only by the rea
son that the ball went too high and
the sheep failed to eat all the weeds.
There were individual plays of note
for the team' was made up of some
four or more teams, and it was not
possible to tell who were the one?
which represented the Florence Mer
chants.
James Skoumal. who by the way
Is a former IMattsniouth boy, was ;
hummer, as he played on third and
also as batter. Of the seven who
saw first and two of them walk-.;, he
had three of them. During the sec
ond inning. Skoumal made third, and
the cnlv one outside of the incident
of the first inning. The tally shot
shows a record of goose eggs
throughout. The men slipping around
so easily m tne tirst only put ine
boys on their mettle, and in the last
half of the second. .Stinipson got a
swat at the ball which netted him
two bases, and made third when
Grassman got a single to firt
Skoumal kept the ball and Stinipson
not knowing it. stepped off the base
and was tagged out. In the fourth.
Turner was forced to second, but was
caught and put out there, while Kl
wards was treated the same way
when Ilerold made a two bagger, and
came home on Gradoville's hit.
Gradoville was at third when St imp-
son went out on a fly. No one got
past second after that until the hist
half of the ninth inning when Kd-
v.ards a given a walk and "a rued
second, when Ilerold got a fair hit,
and Kdwards came home, and ended
the game, the results being as fol
lows:
Merchant. 1 0 ft O 0 o o 0 0 J
Red Sox l 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 -2
Some of the spectacular plays were
marie by Fd wards on first. when
he caught three hot ones straight
from the bat. and by .McCarthy in
center field. Grassman at short and
Gradoville on third.

THOMAS WILLS DID THE TURN.
From Monday's Dally. '
The matter. of the condition of the
roads between the Masonic home
and the Platte bridge, which has
come in for such a scoring at the
hands of everybody from Duluth to
San Antonio, and from Seattle to
Savannah as well as the people at
home, has been made better. It has
1 1 .C
come trom a source not looweu ioi
but for which the public are grate
ful, nevertheless. Thomas Will who
lives on the road between here and
the bridge took his teams and hired
man, and went alter tne roau, lrom
the .Masonic home to the river,
propably cost him some twenty-five
or t m rt v dollars, nut nc got resuus
in that the road is iti pretty fair
condition at this time. The putting
of the road into passible condition is
erasing a blot from the name of
Plattsmouth and Cass county in her
honor roll among (lie cities and coun
ties of the state. It is an added con
venience to everyone who have to
travel over the road. Thanks to Mr.
Wills fi:r hi kindness, he had no
more obligation to make a road of
t'.iii hind, than a hundred other peo
ple, but be ditl have what those
should have had who did not fix th3
road, an inclination to remove the
?tu'ni:i, of an almost impassable roau
which led past his home.

WEEPING WATER HOME GUARDS
ARE AFTER SOME DELIN

From Monday's Daily.
The mission of the home guards is
to do the things necessary, which the
law in its broader application or
more specific sense, does not take
cognizance of, and the company
which was organized at. Weeping
Water, have not lost the view of
what they are there for. This morn
ing they were in when the boys were
;oing away and desired to take the
matter of the delinquency of a fani-
ilv in that neighborhood, who had
few of their substitute to the hogs,
had boasted that they had gotten two
f their sons out of the draft and
would get the other one out. While
there were a number of the boys
voung men. the father had rented
ine lariii 10 ine fuu, m iun 1 w
keep them the manager of the farm,
and they hired out by the month to
the boys, which they seemed t-.i think
would cover the legal phase of the
matter. The county attorney was
out of town and they had to defer
the matter until his return.
