Nickel of near "Elm wood, came in yesterday overland and re ports the corn very backward in his section, but it looks much letter than was anticipated several weeks since. Carl A. Sax, a well-to-do farmer of near Greenwood, was in the city Fri day, on business, and while here en rolled his name for the Journal. He is also a democrat of the tirst water and a splendid gentleman. John Krager, one of the Journal's staunch supporters, and a prominent farmer living seven miles southwest of Mynard, called Saturday and re newed for another year. Mr. Kraeger reports an immense rain in his section Friday niht. II. ifestor was in the city Saturday, and it wasour pleasure to take him by the hand for the tirst time in several weeks. IJert Shultz and wife came down from South Omaha Saturday morning for a brief visit with rela tives and friends. Bert is employed by the Burlington as switchman at South Omaha. William Neville, who has been en gaged in some railroad work for the Union Pacific railroad near Oieyenne, Wyoming, arrived in the city a few days ago on a visit to his family. He will go to Missouri next week. Mayor F. J. Morgan and II. II. Tartsch and wife returned from Bro ken, Bow, Neb., Sunday evening. Mr. Morgan has lecn there for several weeks disposing of a stock of goods, in which he was assisted by Mr. Tartsch. Superintendent E. L. Rouse and family returned Friday evening from their six weeks outing in Colorado. During their alsence they made their headquarters at Emma. The Prof, reports a most pleasant time, and lias the appearance of being greatly bene fitted. Miss Louisa Smith returned from Central City, South Dakota, Sunday evening, where she was visiting her sister, Mrs. W. E. Coolidge. She was accompanied by MissTheda Coolidge, who will visit her grandparents sev eral months. Ii. II. Patton, of the B. & M. paint shop, accompanied by his family, de parted Saturday morning for Grant City, Worth and Gentry, Missouri, to visit a few weeks with relatives and friends. Bob formerly resided in that section and so did the Journal family, and we know he and his family will enjoy their visit with the hospitable Missourians. Mrs. Mollie Alien, of South Fork, Ky., says she has prevented attacks of cholera morbus by taking Chamber lain's Stomach and Liver Tablets when she felt an attack coming on. Heroldand child ren are visiting the former's parents in his city Mr. and Mrs. Herman rold. O. F. is foreman of one of the departments of the B. & M. shops at Holyoke, Colorado. J. M. Kiser, of Mynard, and Bar ker, of near there, took advantage of the Burlington's cheap excursion rates last week to visit points in the state of Washington, for which they depart ed Friday niglit. Heil, of the Pleasant View Stock Farm, in Eight Mile Grove precinct, was-in the city Monday, and made the Journal a pleasant visit. Prof. D. K. Luthy, of the Ashland public schools, in company with Superintendent Wortman, gave the Journal a call yesterday. Mr. Luthy was in charge of the Weeping Water schools last year, and will have charge of the Ashland schools the ensuing school year. J. T. Gillespie, of Eldorado Springs, Mo., is in the city this week advertis ing some splendid bargains in Missouri farms. Eldorado Springs is situated in Cedar county, and right in the midst of the finest fruit section in the state, besides the land is well adapted to the growth of all kinds of cereals. Eldo rado Springs is one of the great health resorts in the west, and some of these farms are located near that city. See him if want a good farm, and one with in your means. D. W. Foster, living three miles southeast of Union, came up Tuesday night to hear Gen. John B. Gordon on the "Last Days of the Confederacy," and was highly pleased with the lecture. Mr. Foster gave the Journal a pleasant call Wednesday morning, and while here renewed for tlie Old Reliable another year. In conversa tion with Mr. Foster, we were pleased to learn that be formerly resided in the same county (Madison) in Ohio, the writer's birth place and knew all the pioneers of that section, including many relatives of the writer. His daughter, Mrs. Turner, is attending the institute, but will teach in Otoe county the coming year. In the eastern portion of the state the temperature has averaged about 8 degrees below normal and in the western portion about 3 degrees below. Except on the northern boundry and in the extreme western counties, the rainfall has been generally above an inch and in a good many localities the amounts have been excessive. Several stations report over 4 inches. The cool, wet week has been un favorable for the best growth of corn; the earlier fields are generally in the roasting-ear stage; late . corn needs much warmer weather for the best results. Very little stacking or thresh ing has been done because of the heavy rains; in the northern counties thresh ing has been done because of the heavy rains; in the northern counties threshing has hardly begun. Some injury to grain in shock is reported from about a dozen of southeastern counties. A fine crop of hay is being secured. Pastures are in excellent condition.
