IlKi'rr.LifAN rejoicintr over Mr. (forinan's return to the senate was brought to a sudden end. Scientists tell us that the jirip tferm is one-sixteent h-thoiisandtli of an inch wide. Hut people who have had the grip think it is as hit; as a bat. Tiikkk are indications that after twice failing to seen ie the approval of the senate for his nomination of ('rum as collector of the port of Charleston, Mr. House Tel t will apHiint him any way. A I'knshy i.v a n i a loRislator follow ini; the president's lead, has int rod need a bill providing cold medals for mothers of lare families. Why not reward them with cradles or sewing machines? Sknatoic IIanna may have lost the key to the side door of the White House but as lone; as there is a Payne in the cabinet the Ohio senator will not have lost his intluencc in White House counsels. Sexatok f Sokm a n has aiready or ganized the democratic forces in the senate and that organization has forced an unwelcome but constitu tional amendment onto the Cuban treaty. Wonders can I e accomplished by organization. England and fSermany are becom ing seriously wrought up over the question of whether Emperor William did or did not swear at his royal neph ew, Edward VII. on the deck of an ! American yacht. We are inclined to suspect Edward said Mime hard things aliout his roval uncle during the Vene zuelan episode. Have Mkkckk did not win out in his efforts to secure the directorship of the census bureau at Washington, and now assumes the attitude of "a politi cian out of a job." Poor Dave is now almost dead enough to skin, and Hose water is tickled almost unto death. Hosey gets 'em good and hard every time lie goes for them, even if it does take time to do it. St. Lor is pastors have lieen agita ting white and black lying lxHh lieing a necessity on certain occasions. We wouldn't be afraid to wager that there is not a man or woman in Plattsmouth that could start out in the morning and tell the solid truth about every thing they see and hear during the day without rinding themselves in hot water and very hot at that by the time the sun goes down. If the opposition to republicanism as displayed in the legislature of Ne braska during the past w inter, do not find enough to convince them for all time to come that that party is not a friend of the people then there is no use trying. Jf tlieycan go to the polls and indorse their acts by voting the re publican ticket after knowing what they liave done in the interests of the railroads to the detriment of the common people, they deserve such pun ishment as has been meted out to them by the tools of the railroads in legisla ting directly in the interests of the railroads. Whither are we drifting? Some time ago a wise fellow discovered that It is unhealthy for two people to occu py the same bed. Lateranother found out that it was unsafe to ride on a car with other people, to attend church where other people attend: later an as sociation of eminent physician de cided that to kiss was to tempt death in all manner of hideous diseases. The very latest is the discovery of a French scientist that the practice of hand shaking is a prolific source of speeding disease. This is a warning Ut prospec tive candidates; awl if things keep up It w ill soon le unhealthy to be buried in the same graveyard with other people. Tiikkk is another big scandal invol ving the chief law ofljeer of the post- otlice department. A few fraudulent get-rich-uickconcernshave from time to time been put on the rrana when thev are unable to nab the gullible millions through the mails. Hut the lanre majority of Uuse con cerns are untouched, although tlie attention of the postofilce departnu-nt has been called to them again and again. They are known to everybody except the astute detectives of the postottice department whose duty it U to find and Droteeute them. Now it aDDears that a brother 'la-law of the oCteer of the department who Juty it u to bring these concerns to jusiiee, has beea connected with one of the Jaxgest .of these fraudulent concerns. CoNGKER.s has paid Soufh Carolina a claim due since the war of 1812. And yet I'cpreseritativc Cannon character ized the Insistence on the payment as "legislative blackmail." I'tKiu old democrat ie Missouri! She is entirely free from debt. The event was celebrated at Jefferson City, the capital a few dayssincc by the burning of bonds, specchmaking and I looming of cannon. When will a like event oc cur in Nebraska? Not as long as the republican party are allowed to run t be affairs of government. IAViD 11. Fkancis, former governor of Missouri, now president of the St. Louis exposition, returns from his Eu ropean trip with a presidential bee buzzing in bis bonnet. The same ob jection to Francis w ill lie made as is to Cleveland, Hill & Co., as he was an occupant of the same Ixiat in the last two presidential compaigns. Well does the writer- remember; the struggle he made in the democratic stale conven tion held in Kansas City in May, 18!)!. We was one of the three delegates from the county in which we then resided. Mr. Francis was there with a full force of his friends determined to incoriM ir ate a gold standard plank in the plat form which was opiosed by the late lamented Kichard 1'. I'.land, Senator W. J. Stone and ot hers. I lot 1 1 were memliersof t he commit tee on plat form, which was comjMiseil of fifteen, one member from each congressional dis rit It wasa fiilter lik'bt, and the ses sion cont uhkmI for nearly twelve hours, and near the hour of midnight, when the final vote was r ached, the commit tee stood eioht to seven in favor of Sil ver hick. It wasa hot tik'ht forsuprema c; lictwccn I'.land and Francis, and caused the defeat of the entire state ti-ket and most of the democratic can didates for congress, including Mr. Illand, W. II. Hatch and Champ Clark. Such disasters st ick in the craw of the average democrat, and we don't believe the democrats of Missouii are quite ready yet to give Mr. Francis a boost for the highest position in the gift of the American people. Railroads vs. Farmers. There Is no longer any doubt that the railroads are solely responsible for the "car-famine," if such a thing reallydid exist. Hut we do not believe there is, and the farmers of Cass county, many of them, are of the same opinion. It has leen surmised by the Journal all along that the railroads have a few special favorites in the grain business along their lines into whose hands they are and have lieen playing, and recent events denote this fact. Take Murray grain dealers for in stance. One firm is supplied with all the cars it can handle, under the pre tense that they are private cars owned hy the starch factory at Nebraska City, while the other lirm gets on an average one or two a week. This looks very much like a game of "freeze out to some people, and that it is simply a question of time when some of the "really home dealers" w ill be compell ed to cease business entirely. Only right here in Nebraska is such discrimination shown so plainly, and the farmers compelled to suffer in con sequence, as the yeomenry of Cass county can fully testify. The facts in the case are simply these: The railroads own Nebraska, and have the people of the state right where they want them, and as long as the republican party hold the reins of government such a state of affairs will not only continue but get a great deal worse.' The present legislature has shown by its acts that it prefers the railroads to the people, and with a "people be d d"' air cont inue to let them hamper the farmers under the false pretense of "a car famine,' virtually backing these corporations in their outrageous conduct. Tragedy Averted. "Just in the nick of time our little boy was saved" writes Mrs W. Watkins of Pleasant City, Ohio. "Pneumonia had played sad havoc with him and a terrible cough set in licsides. Doctors treated him. but he grew worse every day. At length we tried Dr. King's New Discovery lor consumption, ana our darling was saved. He's now sound, and well."
