LACE INDUSTRY IN BAD WAY! SOME IDEAS C:J PCL!,::iE33
Season's Caprice cf F?sh!on Hrs Re
sulted in Heavy Falling OTf
In Trade.
The caprices of fashion have told
their tale on the lace indu: try at Ca
lais. There is a serious fallliiK off In
trade. Many lace workers are Idle,
and there Is a fear that those who are
in work will have to suffer a reduction
in waj;es. And all because during the
present year It lias pleased fashion
able women to dress like umbrella.
That is to say, they have abandoned
those garments which required lace as
a fitting adornment. At any rate
this Is the reason given at Calais for
the wretched-condition of the lace
trade. I'nfeitunately for the lace mak
ers the outlook for the future is far
from briKht.
Fashion Is plotting asalnst the tlirec
toire mode and in favor of Louis XVI.
pnniers. In order to stand up against
this new fashion the lace manufactur
ers talk of turning their attention to
the making of silk tulle. Hut they
will first of all have to make their
peace with the rival town of Caudry,
in the Nord, where cheap tulle is be
ing turned out. Apart from the freaks
of fashion America Is blamed for the
present distress among the lace work
ers. Formerly America went to Calais
for lace, but now Uncle Sam decks his
womenklnd with lace of his own making.
Students' Use of Morphine.
Opium, as has repeatedly been ex
plained, is committing ravages among
officers and men ln the naval ports,
and now the Paris Intranslgeant pub
lishes a tale of the addiction of stu
dents in the Latin Quarter to mor
phine. It says that tho young men
who have yielded to the influence of
the morphine habit are not content
to satisfy this unwholesome craving in
solitude, but must needs find compan
ions, so that whole groups are cor
rupted, and the evil is steadily in
creasing. Nor Is this deplorable
weakness limited to the male sex.
Young women, us a matter of fact,
have set the bad example In the Quar
ter, and the men have followed suit.
The Journal, indeed, calls on the po
lice to keep a sharp eye on the es
tablishments of various chemists who,
as it alleges, dispense morphine on
the strength of prescriptions which
are manifestly concocted.
Re.ttunc for Display of Gsod Breed

Two Kinds.
Politeness consists in concealing
from other people the fact that they
annoy you, says Thomas L. Massou in
Mpplncott's.
If a man springs up from his seat ln
a crowded car to give it to a woman
that is politeness. If he permits his
wife to drag a chair form one room
Into the other, while he is smoking
and reading the evening paper, that
Is innocent absorpt'.on.
It nays to be polite when it doesn't
cost anything.
Politeness originated in the garden
of Eden, when Adam fell merely to
oblige Eve. (And yet they say that
man is selfish! )
We should always be polite to our
Inferiors in the presence of our su
periors. Nothing is more effective.
The man who Is truly polite never
forgets himself. Such a man. If he Is
obliged to kick another man down
stairs, will always see that his hat Is
sent out to him.
Children are naturaly impolite, un
til they Hre taught that they cannot
hope to make much money without.
Always bo polite when you are bor
rowing money from a friend. Remem
ber that it doesn't cost anything to
give him the Impression that you are
going to pay him back.
There are two kinds of politeness;
politeness to yourself and politeness
to others.
When you come home late at night,
for example, even if you are very
tired, always remove your hat and
coat before getting into bed. It Is
little attentions like that that consti
tute you a gentleman. At the same
time, do not disturb your wife If you
can possibly avoid It. It Is the height
of rudeness to awaken a sleeping
lady.
The polite man Is always welcome
everywhere. That Is, almost every,
where except at a bargain counter, a
fire or a financial panic.
Then he Is de trop.

A young reslanraTit was liTought in
to this city city a few days ago in the
form of a cabbage that is a giant hi
Its class. And there is some rlass
to It, as It fills the lop of a good sized
table and would make a meal for 20
families. The monster Is full threo
feet In height and weighs nearly 20
pounds. It was raised In the garden
of Albert Todesce, of Ilosllndale.
The seed that this cabbage came
from has heretofore never been guilty
of auy such conduct nnd has been sat

of the vegetable that Is commonly em
