et. You've been sick, haven't you?'
"'Yes,' said I. 'Stomach trouble. I
guess I won't get to the Easter blow
out. The doctor has ordered me to
give up champagne.
'"You haven't paid his bill, yet, eh?'
said Mr. Rogers, and he walked off
chuckling."

While work on a new building was
going on in a southern town not long
ago an old negro employed as a hod
carrier suddenly Bllpped while near
ing the third story and plunged head
long to the ground. Several passers-
by rushed over expecting to find a
man dead with a broken neck, as the
old fellow had struck squarely on the
top of his head. Finding tho old man
still alive some one emptied the con
tents of a whisky bottle down his

negro sat up and looked around.

asked a bystander kindly.

CROUNSE IS AT REST.
Ex-Governor of Nebraska Passes
Away.
Omaha. Former Governor Lorenzo
Crounse died on the stroke of mid
night Thursday. He had been 111 for
a long time, and at different periods
of his illness had seemed on the verge
of death, but had rallied in rather re
markable fashion. For the last few
days the former governor has been
fulling rapidly.
Ixirenzo Crounse was born at Shar
on, In Schoharie county, N. Y Jan.
27, 1834, of German descent, both his
grandparents being born across the
water. He was the youngest of seven
children, and when a boy worked In
his father's tannery. He was educated
In the common schools and attended
two terms at the New York Confer
ence seminary, teaching school In the
winter to earn money for his expenses
during the summer terms.
' W'jsa 21 years of age he began the
study of law and was admitted to the
bar in 1857, at Ft. Fluln, Montgomery
county, N. Y., opening an office in
that town, where he practiced until
the breaking out of the civil war,
when he raised at Ft. Plain Battery
K, First roglment, New York Light
artillery, being chosen captain of the
company. He served four years and
was engaged in several battles, being
severely wounded while holding Bev
erly's ford on the RappahannocK river.
When partially recovered he resigned
his command and In 18G4 moved to
Nebraska, settling at Rulo, In Richard
son county.
In the election In October of that
year the future governor of his stato
was chosen as one of the county's
representatives in the territorial leg
islature. Two years later he was ap
pointed a member of the committees
on Jilclary, revision of the statutes,
and to draft a constitution to be sub
mitted to the voters of the territory
at the next election. In October, 18Gti,
Jie was elected a justice of the su
preme court, being nominated by
unanimous vote in the republican
state convention held in Flattsmouth.
He assumed this ofllce in March, ISO",
when the state was admitted, and
served a term of six years and was
assigned to the third, or northern dis
trlct, comprising nil the states north
of the Flatte river excepting the couu
ties of Douglas and Sarpy.
Governor Crounse declined a re
nomination to the bench at the ex
piration of his judicial term, but in
1872 was nominated on the third bal
lot In state convention for member
of the lower house of congress. He
was elected that fall against General
Silas A. Strickland and John Taffe.
receiving 17,000 of the 27,000 votes
cast. He was re-elected to congress
In 1874, but In 187C was defeated for
th senate.
At the close of his congressional
campaign, Mr. Crounse took up his
abode on a farm in Washington coun
ty and in 1879 was appointed Internal
revenue collector for Nebraska by
Fresident Hayes. Twelve years later
Fresident Harrison appointed him as
sistant secretary of the treasury. In
1892 he was elected governor, serving
one term and refusing renomination
As private citizen lie resided on his
farm in Washington county until 1901
when he was nominated and elected a
member of the state senate.
PHILIPPINE BILL IN HOUSE.

Washington. The house Thursday
was again in the throes of a tariff dls
cussion, the entire day being spent in
the consideration of the Philippine
tariff bill. It encountered no serious
opposition, however, although Mesws.
Harrison (N. Y.) and Underwood
(Ala.) criticised It generally. After
the reading of the bill had been con
eluded further action was deferred
until Monday.
Taft Will Review Case.
Chicago. President Taft will r&
view the case of Marion Gray, the
young matrimonial agent whose
metnod of conducting her business
led recently to her being sentenced
to one year In the house of correction
according to an announcement made
today. The woman's attorney stated
thut a stay of execution had been or
dered by Attorney General Wicker
sham, In order to give the president
time to look into the case.

Des Moines, la. While making the
Initial trip on Thursday down the Des
Moines river to determine whether It
Is navigable or not. the steamer Hor
net, under command of Major Meigs
of the United States army, met with
an accident by the breaking of tho
main shaft of tho engine. The boat
was finally lodged at Red Rock, pend
ing repnlrs. Under an act of congress,
the War department Is making a sur
vey of the Des Moines river nnd the
steamer Hornet is making the run
from Des Moines to Keokuk.
