Since the president has finished
his laborious task of writing that
"war" message he might easily find
time to give us a republican district
attorney in place of A. J. Sawyer,
whose term expired several days ago.
Italy refuses to sell her best war
ship to Spain on account, she says, of
her regard for the belligerent powers,
but we opine it is chiefly on account of
not getting cold cash for her boat. It
seems to be a question of money
everywhere.
A GOOD share of tho glory resulting
from the Spanish-American affair has
fallen to Gen.Fitzhugh Lee. But the
south must not appropriate him en
tirely. The northern people know a
good man when they see him and are
not disposed to ask what 6tate he hails
from.
Governor Holcomb is getting a
great many suggestions as to how he
can use Senator Allen in case of war,
In pursuance of the request of the
latter. The most sensible suggestion
yet made is that he bo made Fog
Horn Extraordinary of a regiment
to sound the reiveille and alarms Ex.
The government has adopted a new
uniform for the boys in blue who aie
expected to land on Cuba in the sweet
subsequently. It will be of brown,
about the coior of dead grass, and will

which has been the standard for many
years.
WHEAT and silver are getting far
ther .apart every day and Fitz Hugh
Lee is already a much bigger man
than Bryan. Thedemocratic nominee
for 1900 will not be a man who feeds
on dead issues, or earns his money
from rear platforms of passenger
trains, when not on duty dividing gate
receipts at county fairs.
Spain is trembling in her boots and
prayerfully hopes the great powers
will intercede and call off the United
States. Your Uncle Sam is hurrying
up with his munitions of war and very
soon the Dons will hear an argument
from the American cannons mouth
that may cause them to stop before
the war is carried very far.
The EDglish press is as badly
divided m sentiment on the Cuban
matter as the U. S. senate. 'The
Chronicle is loyal to America and
cherishes the Kindliest feeling, while
the London Times, and Gazette are
apparently very jealous of any pies
tige which this country might gain
by a successful resort to arms.
J. he resignation of Dr. Cook from
the school board and the prompt selec
tion of Dr. Cummins to succeed him,
by the republican members of the
board, shows that partisan feeling is
not known and that only the good of
the schools is considered. Dr. Cum
mins is always active in whatever he
undertakes and we predict he will
make a useful member of the board.
Col. Ross Hammond, postmaster at
Fremont and editor of the Tribune is
very much enamored of the president's
message and uses plenty of warm ad
jectives in showing the good qualities
and statesmanship of McKinley. We
are glad to know that he has a few de
fenders for that message evidently
needs both an interpreter and defender.
EVIDENCE OF PROSPERITY.
County Recorder George Hay in
forms us that hlB ofllce shows three
times us many transfers of real estate
as this time one year ago and about
ono-third as many mortgages are ro
cortled. This Is a remarkablo show
ing and is one that proves better than
pages of argument, what tho condi
tions of tho wesiorn country really
are. Over 300 deeds of transfer have
boen recorded since tho first of the
present year.
Maduid dispatches say the Span
ish minister deems war inevitable,
and the Queen has culled the Cor tes
in special session for next Wednesday.
General Woyler, tho butcher who laid
the mine which blew up tho Maine,
when questioned yesterday said: "I
have indeed offered my services to the
queen. I consider war with America
inevitable, or Cuba is lost to Spain.
I believe war is prefenable to a con
tinuation of the prolonged tension be
tween Washington and Madrid."

ler to the front and make him the

under the guise of a savior of the na
tional hon- The general undoubt
edly has numerous followers, and even
the newspapers which since his re
turn from Cuba, have violently de
nounced him, are now lauding the
former captain-generp.l of Cuba, as the
one man who can save the situation.
NOW THAT the country is face to face
with a war proposition, it must be
gratifying to the average citizen to
know that its financial condition is
highly satisfactory and to contrast it
with "what might have been" had
the free silver proposition carried in
189G and the country been placed up
on a silver basis. The money in cir
culation in the United States today is
more than at any time in its entire
history, the April treasury statement
showing the total to bo $1,756,038,045, not reached the president or the gov-

cultivate tho idea in tho public mind
that he is the logical candidate of the
democracy aiid its allies in 1900. Gen.
Leo has made an admirable record in
Havana, where he was continued by
the present administration, and could,
no doubt, arouse a great deal of popu
lar enthusiasm if he should decide to
make tho race for the presidential

The new wire trust organized in
Cleveland, Ohio will control about 75
per cent of the country's total output
of rods, wire, wire nails and wire pro
ducts "in the interest of improved
methods of manufacture and the con

The Howard and Baker families in
Kentucky have long nursed a feud
which resulted in a pitched battle Sat
urday, in which ten were killed. The
roost unfortunate feature is the fact
that a few members were left to fight
again.
Senator Allen's resignation, given
to the galleries a few days ago, had
while the gold in circulation is also
greater than any previous report, be
ing $5S2,129,742. And all this in the
face of the assertion made by the Chi
cago convention twenty-one months
ago that the money of the couutry
could not materially increase without
free coinage of silver. In these twenty-one
months the increase in money
in circulation has been over $246,000,
000, while the increase in gold alone
has been over $125,000,000.
The general impression, both abroad
and in Washington, is to the effect
that war between this country and
Spain is certain unless the United
States should back down. It must
make the administration feel very
proud, backed by 70,000,000 people
with unlimited resources, to think
that foreign nations believo we can be
bluffed by a poverty-stricken nation of
17,000,000 people. The American peo
ple will not back down, and it is
thought Mr. McKinley's spinal col
umn may receive some needed
strengthening before many more days
of useless talk are indulged in.
TnE people of the United States are
today in better condition to supply
the money necessary for war than on
any former occasion. The money in
circulation in the United States today
is more than ever before. It has in
creased $246,333,445 in the twenty-one
months since the Chicago convention
took the ground that money of the
country could not increase materially
without free coinage of silver, and
stands today at "high water mark."
TniKTl four life insurance compa
nies transacted business in this state
last year, and their reports to the aud
itor show that they received in policy
fees $1,149,079 and paid in losses only
8387,857. In other words the life in
surance companies made a profit of
. $761,222 in Nebraska, a tremendous
sum of money to be withdrawn from a
western state. No wonder our people
are poor! The only romedy Is to build
up mutual home companies.
Tom Reed exploded a mine under
the port bow of yellow journalism by
steering the resolution for interven
tion and the independence of Cuba
through the house in about an hour
and a half the day after the presi
dent's message came, notwithstanding
the yellow journals reported the bet
ting at great odds that the resolution
would not even be reported until next
week. A Czar is sometimes useful.

Ed. Howard, of the Papillion
Times, the bell wether fusionist, is
showing signs of repentance. He has
hinted that if the state auditor really
rides on a pass he will not support
him on the purity platform this fall.
This is a sad condition of affairs, be
cause the auditor is guilty of the of
fense suggested, hence we may safely
expect trouble in the camp as soon as

department shows that at least 80,000
acres -will be planted this year in su
erar beets, yielding 180,000,000 pound
of sugar. Seventeen factories will be
in operation, eight of them new ones
According to the editor of the Holly
Chitftain a little girl of that place
who has been taught to include every
body in her prayers, startled her
mother with the following: "Now, O

lose you we would have only McKinley
left to take care of us, and he is not
doing as well as papa expected he
would."

Hack Adams in Jail.
Constable Hartshorn brought Buck
Adams in this evening from Louisville
and landed him in jail. He broke all
of Miles Drake's show cases and fron
windows, and was bound over to dis
trict court.
The war feeling in Omaha is not
so rampant as it was, since the peo
ple up there have concluded that war
might ruin the exposition. Uncle
Sam, if given a chance, without too
many patriots (?) pulling at his coat
tails would lick Spain to a fare-you
well, before the time arrives for the
great show to open.
Presinent McKinley's actions do
not seem to be exactly in line witn his
message. As commander-in-chief of
the army and navy the activity and
preparation going on for war must be
the result of his orders, and those who
have thought the honor of the country
would not be sustained by him are
likely to chancre their minds on that
score.
