The taxpayers of this city should go to the cbuacil chamber in a body to night and help veto the last act of the Water company fiasco. The treasury is being looted, not by tens, but by hundreds of dollars. Matthew Cor ing, who claims to have been hired to Alaska has paid us to date $103,000, 000. This enormous sum has been de rived from furs, herring, salmon, cod, ivory, whalebone and gold. At the time cf the last census the United States had taken out $76,000,000. Since then we have been enriched by $27, 000.000. Of this. $20,000,000 has been defend the city in the Water company , goi Jind the remainder from other products. These aro giant figures, but they are the exact truth. The first actual settlement of that wonder ful country will beffin next Brrint. The fum total of what il will add to Iho world's wealth in the coming years passes conjecture. It will be a pile of money, mountainous and sublime. C:ise, hts drawn i IU.uu as expenses, a cost bill in tho federal court estimated at over $100 must be paid, and now another raid is made, or attempted, by Matthew Gering filing a claim for at torney fees of $G00. Over $1,100 to ho paid out, and for what? Tho city was defeated in the federal curt ri umana, men tiering took an appeal to the wrong eourt and the city was beaton again. If he had taken an apeal to the iroper tri bunal we might have gotten a different settlement. His failure to do what ho promised to do may have cost the citv several thousand dollars, and now on top of that comes this bill for itouu more, mere seems to do no limit so long as a dollar remains in the treasury, unless the taxpayers go ind demand their rights.
