The lecture by Dr. Eugene May at the Presbyterian church Sunday even ing was largely attended the church being entirely filled. The lecture was quite entertaining to those posted on the early history of Rome and its art development, though to people who had no knowledge of ancient history it was rather prosaic On Tuesday evening ho will again lec ture at the Presbyterian church on a subject that will interest everyone. Mr. May has been a great traveler, a close observer and is quite an eloquent, forceful speaker. His descriptive pow ers are good, and with such a subject as "Yellowstone Park," with its myriads of natural wonders, his lecture is cer tain to prove intensely interesting. The air-ship epidemic, which has a fllieted Nebraska and Kansas for sev eral weeks, struck NebiasKa City night before la-t, as is evidenced by the following from the News of that place: R. M. A Scrap of l'aper." A News reporter had the pleasure of attending the rehearsal last even ing of the above piece, by tho senior class, and we can say that the work done was simply surprising. A real treat is in store for our people who enjoy a comedy, as this will be put on far better than is usually done by amateurs. Mrs. Geo. Dovey has had the class in training for several weeks acd they show the effect of her skillful management. They have their lines perfectly, their 6tage presence is good and some members of the class will surprise their friends by showing dramatic ability of a;high order. Where the Fremont, Elkhorn Sc Missou.-i Valley branch of the sys tem crosses the river at IJlair the bridge is on a big bend in the course of ihe stream. The cock is narrow B'(d low. Since the flood came this spaing the river has shown a decided tendency to change its course at this point and make a eut-ofT. If it does the bridge will bo left over a lake three miles from the channel, of the stream. Today tho angry current washed away a strip of land forty feet wide at the threat oaed point, carry ing down some of the Elkhorn tracks and some cars. The Elkhorn people have a force of men at work making every effort to save the bridge. A special from Pierre, S. The waves have washed away miles of grade that had been spared hitherto. Many miles of railroad will have to be reconstructed entirely. CASS COUNTY'S CLAIM. A 15111 Presented to the Legislature Is Favorably Passed Cpon. This county paid to the s'ato at sundry times taxes -since lSUO to the amount of several thousand dollars. In many instances parties came in and showed to tho commissioners that his or her tax was a double assessment, or was wrong, and in such cases the board refunded tho amount. By going through the books carefully from 1S60 down to the present time it was found that the sum of $940 had been re funded, which had beforehand been paid to the state as the state's share of the tax. A cliim was presented to the legis lature to pay this sum back to the county, and today Commissioner Fal ter received a telegram saying the bill bad passed. Cass county will, therefore, be nearly $1,000 better off. The claim was refused in the house. but the senate, it seems, brought them to time. .NEltKASKA NOTKS.
