higher priced hogs with a profit
but if they pack $-")'7o to $0 hogs and
the market goes down, then they
will be losers, and this is no part of
the packers' business. As soon as
the prices get down to a steady and
reliable basis the reports will show
that packing has been inarerially
increased.
Those who think that there has
been no stock received at this point
will be convinced by looking the
matter up. From January 1 to De

(101,882 cattle, 1,50.-1,112 hogs, 170,787
sheep, 13,310 horses and mules;
showing a gain of 145,180 cattle, a
gain of 150,884 hogs, a gain of 17,3)G
sheep, of 5,400 horses and mules as
compared with 18U1. Theindications
are that the year 18J3 will see very
prosperious times for the South

the receipts will be much larger

space is given by the secretary to
the discussion of this very impor
taut and pressing business.
Considerable space is devoted to
the territories and their govern

is the subject of an extended para
eranh. The report is replete with
information as to the great bureaus
under the control of the interior de

and thus preserve the nation, l lie
fears of disaster and a bankrupt
treasury as a result of a continu
ance of the republicans iu power
will be seen to be groundless, and
the only fear now in the minds of
the people is that the party for the
first time in thirty and more years
has had control of the government
will lead it to financial and political
ruin by the performance of the ab
surd promises of their platform."
Senator Paddock said:
"Like all of Mr. Harrison's tnes-
sages, it is lurid and comprehen
sive. It sums up the record of pro-
grew under loyal and intelligent
republican leadership iu the inter
ests of the nation. It is an incom
patibly able business ntatement,
covtring four of the greatest and
most successful business years
known in the history of governmen
tal jdministration in this country,
froti one of the ablest, it not the
ablest, of all our presidents."
