placed tiiB turlniie water wheels. Kuch
uf these wheels tins 110 feet elTietivo
lu'iid uf water over it. Tiie water Im
earned down to I hem in great pipes
seven or eight feet in diameter, called
penstocks. Afh r the water had done
its work mi the wlictils it is discharged
into the big tunnel, which runs away un
derground to the river below tho fulls.
Tiiis tunnel has been tho moat tilth
cult and costly purt of the work so fur.
it was cut through solid limestone rock,
lint the rock was found to crumble ho
badly after exposure that the whole
7,000 feet of the tunnel had to be bricked
up. It is in the form of a horseshoe,
twenty-eight tfet high and eighteen feet
broad, innido diuiensionR. Starting lit a
depth of 100 feet it has a downward
slojie or jiiteh of four feet in a thousand
at first, increasing to seven feet in a
thousand. Its mouth where it dis
charges into tlie rapids is 214 feet below
the brink of the cliffs which form the
ravine. Its cruss Hectiou is 3(!5 sipiaro
feet, and ut the spied of twenty feet a
second, with which the water will rush
ont of it, there will be a discharge of
about 60,000 gallons every minute.
And yet this enormous amount of
water will not how any appreciuhle
drain whatever on the maguificeut vol
ume of Niagara. It will lower the
lerel of the great flood only alwut one
and a halt inches. The extent and con
tancyof tfiis water jiower can be un
derstood wheu it is realized that the
water service of the great lakes, with
the land sloping iuto them aud contrib
uting to the Falls of Niagara, has a to
tal drainage basin of over 240,000 square
miles equal to more than twice the area
of Great Britain and Ireland, about 40,
000 square miles more than the total
area of France, and more than fifteen
times tho total area of Switzerland. The
Horseshoe falls are 158 feet high ami
2,000 feet wide. The other channel, in
the state of New York, forms the Amer
ican falls, which are 109 feet high at
the eastern side, and 1,000 feet wide,
lioth falls comprising 8,000 linear feet of
water.
The extreme limits of variation in the
depth of the river at different times
above the falls are feet, but these
limits are rarely leuched. Theordinary
variation is alout one foot. lielow the
falls the extreme variation leaches fif
teen feet. (i;net.;lly a variation of one
fixit above tho fulls is followed by a
change of level of live feet below tho
falls. These slight changes are of short
duration, and ureditemaiidy to long con
tinued and violent wind or sudden great
accumulation i f ice.
I In average dischargo of water at tin'
outlet of biilie Krio into the Niagara
river is i s' iiiiiiifii bv sumo authorities at
Utl.j lion cubic h i t a second. Moreover,
as far as this or tliu next two genera

It Is Doubtful.
From present indications it is
rather doubtful whether Sixth Btreet
ill be juived before epring. The
rumor to that effect wan circulated
on the Btreet today nnd a llERAbn
reporter aHkeil V. K. White chair
luanoftbe board of public, worka
refjardin the matter. Mr. White
tuiyy that the curbing will be ct
thin fall and that the paving will
probably not be done before
spring. " I be contractor " Nr. lute
Hays he hud bought the Atchison
brick and when be hail
ordered them shipped, found out
that they had been Bold and that
there was a law suit jiending' over
the sale of the brick. Mr. White
hiivb he it-fused to accept anything
t xcept the Atchison brick. The
contractors have brick in Omaha
that the board there refused lo
accept and they with offered here
but Mr. Whitesaid if they were not
good enough for Omaha they were
not good enough for I'lattsinou'tli.
. Mr. White says that the contractor
gave a good bond ami that the con
tractors agreed to stand all damages.
Hint may occur by the paving not
being done.
