For three days ChiiMjo is to he
H'ivcn over to pageantry and pleas
ure, and the indications are that the
attending; eereiiionie, formal and
informal, official and social, will he
witnessed by nearly half a million
pwoplc from abroad. Idalinrate ar
rangments have been made to ;i ve
the rrrctiinaica of dedication that
official character which should at
tend an enterprise of such inter
national ami representative im
portance, and the Wor1d' fair city
is attired in a costume of tunny
colors. From every important edi
fice in Chicago, from every peak
and pinnacle, from every balcony
and window, are suspended the
colors that have been invoked for
the adornment of this occasion.
The sta.-s and stripes naturally pre
dominate, but the colors of all tia-'
tions mass in producing iherand
ajrj;rci:ite result. The municipal
colors of Chicago, a new fad called
into beintf by the supposed exig
ency of the occasion, are seen on
every hand, mid, although now and
then some representative merchant
may be found who has omitted to
suspend the stars and stripes over
his portal, the triangle- banner of
terra cotta and while is never want
ing' t at test his municipal pride.
Some of the decorations that
adorn the reat buildings of Chi
cago display considerable taste,
and the variety is such that the ob
server is spared the monotony so
frequently attending occasions of
profuse ornamentation. The city
hall makes a pleasant appearance,
with its vast pillars enveloped in
the inevitable terra cotta and the
municipal coat of arms suspended
at the main entrance, crowned
above by the shield of the I'nited
States; ami the emerald reen that
finds a place in the tine- ll i n from
the balconies and windows i -j a d,
ieate compliment to the aldermen,
which they cannot fail to appre
ciate. The postollice and the
I'nited States government build
ing are other representative build
ings that present a wealth of orna
mentation, but in the dccorafoiis
here the stars and stripes and the
varied colors of tin- national em
blem play the most conspicuous
part.
Portraits of Columbus are seen
everywhere, and for the fust time

familiar features of political lead

heretofore. Already so many discredit
able actions, not to use a stronger word,
havo been conuiiitted in lairopo by
means i.f hyjmotisiii that in Italy, Arts
ti Hungary , parts of Switzerland, Co
penhagen and other ninniciplilitius laws
have bi-eu enacted prohibiting its public
praeliec by any except physicians. So,
on the other hand, the police, without
uny st;it uto on the Mibject, havo treated
traveling mesmerists as disorderly char
acters. Thus Donato was expelled from
Italy, and Hansen, another hypnotist,
from Austria, v;is notified never to re
turn under penalty of arrest, fine and
imprisonment.
This Donato (whoso real niimo, by the
war, is liliont) hypnotized an Italian ar
tillery oflieer, who immediately became
half crazy. From t une to time ho would
o into KoHii'tnbulisni at tho sight of a
bright object II would follow carriage
lamps, iiiyl unless prevented would walk
toward locomotive or steamer lights.
An architectural st udcnt was mesmer
ized by stilling at his com passes, Hf tor
which it was impossible for him to draw
without going to hleep.
A young girl of Milan, of beauty and
character, was hypnotized and impressed
with the notion that tsho was married 'o
a man she had never seen but once, and
then in thu darkness. Sho went crazy
nad died in a hospital.
Another young girl (of Paris, this
time) was pu under a similar hpell and
was ruined. Shu finally entered tho
Saltpctrii re hospital, where, after a long
and painful remedy, what was left of
her former self was pronounced cured.
In Now York a hypnotized person was
made to believe that ho had taken slow
poison. lie fell sick and wasted away
to a shallow. Not until the attending
physician tiscovered tliettuo nature of
the hallucination and rehypnotized the
subject was there any (symptom of con
valescence. In Turin, at u series of hypnotic lec
tures and public experiments, a largo
proportion of those who attended were
taken sick with headache, insomnia and
other nervous ailments. A few of those
who were ( f a hysterical temperament
remained id for a long time.
In tiie foregoing easis the hypnotizing
wis done with no e il intent, hut there
ai'e hundreds of recorded instances where
it was done with intent of evil. Phila
