necessary apparatus for raising tho sce
nery and stretching tho largo canvases.
Thero aro threo very fine rooms in
the older theatres Covent Garden,
Drury Lane, and Her JIajesty's (the lat
ter for some reason is the most agreeable
to paint in of tho three, as thero in no
thoroughfare through it: nerosa Covent
Garden and Drury Lane rooms workers

way). Tho room at Covent Garden is
of vast proportions (90 feet long by 30
feet wide, and about 55 feet high), and
possesses four separate stretching frames
the largest 42 feet by 70 feet. This
enormous stretcher is worked up and
down by means of a very powerful wind

iron chains. Tho canvas to cover such a
frame would cost about 15 with the
sewing. Tho physical strain in covering
so large a Burface, and in walking back
ward and forward from one end of the
room to the other to judge of tho effect,
is exceedingly severe. Tho present ar

vancement upon the older method of
