ARE THEY EVER CURED?
ratlent In an Innann Asylum'
-A Very
8rlou OiiNtlun.
Tho otifstion recently raised bv cx-
patieuts of an insane asylum, whether
aane people arc ever kept there after cure
because cruel relatives will not take tho
leal measures necessary to pet thera out,
has cau.seil a rood deal of talk. Every
village has its unfortunate, who is
pointed out as a whilom madman or mad
woman. A terrible name it is to bear,
too, for never can come the day, this side
of the prave, when he who has once been
into the dark valley is safe against a os
siblo return. Ho is always a subject of
suspicion and knows it, and if to this
knowledge is added tho belief that he was
locked up wrongfully his position is
doubly galling.
A reporter asked a young doctor who
lias tserved his timo in the asylum wheth
er sauo'people were ever kept there when
they ought to bo at liberty.
"That is a very delicate question," ho
said, "and very hard to answer. The
dividing line between sanity and insanity
is very narrow and very faint sometimes,
and it In a very delicate matter to say
when a person ha crossed it. Some
times a patient will lo jolly and appa
rently sane fi.T months and then tud
denly fall back intu the depths perhaps
into tho dangerous itage of lunacy, it
may be laid down as a safe rule that a
man who has been once iusane may be
come so again, especially if worried and
fretted, ami facts like these must enter
into any discussion of tho question you
have asked.
"Now it frequently happens hero, as at
all asylums, that a patient reaches tho
state so close to a cure that it would bo
hard to sav- that ho was not nil right, lie
begins to fret over his confinement, and if
he could Imj 1 aken out ami not worried with
Iheeares which invariably accompany a
battle with the world, lie would bo far
setter off. jK-rhaps. than under tho nag
ging influence of tho bolts and bars,
which he knows in an asylum stand be
tween him and liberty. To send such a
man out into the world and compel him to
light for himself would be cruel. Nine
times out of ten he would be back again
very soon, and much the worse for hav
ing left the asylum. N5w that is tho
class of cases which has undoubtedly
been brought to public attention, and
some of them aro sad enough. I will say
this: that if the medical stall of an asy
lum is satisfied that a patient is thor
oughly cured cured so well that he or
she can face tho strain of a battle with
life no heartless relatives would be able
to keep that patient imprisoned."
"Dut how about inebriate patients?"
asked the reporter.
"Well, they are a sort of exception to
tho rule," said tho doctor. Man- a
man is kept in an asylum who is erfeetly
sane, who, if he were allowed the liberty
of the outside world, would bo sure to
drink to excess. The insanity of drink is
; 1:1 hint. Such a man, I ihink, is bettor
1 behind asylum walls." New York World.
V.'oik of si Hotel Chambermaid.
The hotel porter has to move and lift
some heavy baggage. But he has an occa
sional rest. It is on tho muscle and sinews
of the hotel chambermaid that tho heaviest
and longest labors fall. There is one on
my floor who has an average of thirty
five rooms to attend to every day. That
means for each room bod making, sweep
ing, dusting, sheet changing and looking
after the toilet requisites. Tho honso
keeper has a sharp eye, is eternally vigi
lant, and not a room is slighted. Cham
ber work doesn't lock hard, but it's very
wearing. I think the man of average
strength would look tired after he had
bent over his fifteenth bed and tucked the
sheets In properly.
Every other morning this girl must
arise at 4 and sweep the parlors. Siio can
escape from the house and her toils every
other day from 4 in the evening until 7
next morning. The remainder of the
time, when not asleep, she is on tho move.
Sho is of the muscular draught horse
breed, and. though not over 20, her
shoulders aro bent like a bow from years
of stooping over beds while making them
up. She sings at her work, and tells m
that sho never cotild get through it if she
did not sing. Sho will be an old, over
worked woman in ten years. A fresher,
vounirer "helo" will sr.DTilv her rdaeo
at K 1 1
when she tumbles out of the ranks from
sheer exhaustion. Nono but stout girl
can endure here. The landlord naturally
and reasonably wants tho strongest girls,
fpr the same reason we want the strong
est horses tq draw car loads. Prentice

Teutonic Element In Chicago.
CL;cago is one of the largest German
cities in the world, so far as tho numeri
cal strength of tho Teutonic element is
concerned. Even in the fatherland there
aro few centers of population which can
vie in this respect with the wonderful
metroplis of the western hemisphere.
Whatever causes may have driven the
German from the land of his birth it can
truthfully bo said that his first aim on
foreign soil is to create a home for him
self. Then ho organizes a verein a so
ciety. In fact, in populous cities the so
ciety precedes the home. Chicago Times.
