The Perpetrator of the Burns
Murder Safely jailed.

Bums, who had been employed as a
domestic in the family of O. A. Car
penter, a prominent and wealthy resi
dent of this city, and who wad found
one week ago, her lody bearing all evi
dences of a desperate murder. Her
throat bad been cut from car to car,
her skull crushed in aud her arms bore
evidence thai .she had- fierce struggle
with her assailants.- Ever since the
discovery of her body the entire com
munity has aided detectives in the
search for her murderer. It was learn
ed that she had ;been engaged to a
vounjr farmer named Dukes, and sus
picion pointed somewhat toward him,
but the past two days a chain appar
ently connecting the circumstances,
has been wound around her former
employer, Carpenter, which resulted
in his arrest this afternoon. Investi
cations disclosed the fact that Zora
had left his employ and and returned
home to her father in the vill.ige near
Lincoln, and on the day preceding her
death, came to this city and paid a vis
it toJCarp enter's office, remaining with
him an hour alone. He was the only
person she yisited so far as known while
here. As to the nature of her visit
Carpenter related the story plainly,
aud denied the facts subs2quently dis
closed. It was also discovered that the
deceased girl was eccentric, and the tes
timony of various letters. The bar ten
der of the Nolte house here, testified
that Carpenter purchased from him a
half pint of whisky the day of the
murder. An examination of Carpen
tar 's buggy today disclosed that the
cushion, lines and shafts were plainly
marked with blood, and on this discov
er)- a warrant was immediately sworn
out for his arrest, he was followed to
jail by a large and excited crowd. The
accused is credited with being the
wealthiest man in Lincoln, owning a
large grain elevator here, a farm near
the city and other property, and he has
a wife and two daughters.

Ocean's Springfield, Illinois, special
says that the sheriff of Logan county
this afternooon applied to the governor

HECEIVEH APPOINTED.
Toledo, Oct. 20. The application of
the Cincinnati Northern, and Cincin
nati division of the Toledo, Cincinnati
& St. Louis, for a separate receiver for
that portion of the road was heard be
fore Judge Baxter at Cincinnati today.
The prayer was the usual one for mar
shalling of liens for the appointment
of receivers for the sale of property,
this being the day for the vacating of
the receivership of E. E. Dwight, and
the action becomes imperative. Judge
Baxter appointed W. J. Craig, of To
ledo, receiver for that portion of the
line in Ohio, and reqired $7,000 bond
authorizing the repairing of that por
tion of the read necessary to keep it in
a (rood condition. The hearing that
was to have been had before Judge Len
man in this city today for right of
