of the ci.i-ritij-Uiou committee of the
east- bound tariff association is in ses
sion htifc today, and considered a prop
osition to change the classification of
drebst.'d beel, meals and other articles,
heretofore carried together with a view
of giving each a beparate classification
so that mutton, beef, pork, etc., will be
no longer carried uuder the same head.
No action was taken pending a visit to
thesioctc yards, which will hs made to

General Greahaai made the following
ruling: The reduction on the 4st iu9t
of domestic rate of postage from three
to !jwo cents reduced also from the
same date, from six to four cents per
half ounce, the double postage charge
made in pursuance with sectiou 391,
Revised Statutes, upon letters for de
livery in the United States commonly
called "ship letters,'' which are con
veyed to this country by vessels not
regularly employed in carrying the
mails.

Peoria, Oct. 17. The grand lodge of
Knight 8 of Pythias occupied this morn
ing with a gi and parade, ond this after
noon with a prize drill. In the latter
the first prize of $300 to the best drilled
and disciplined division of uniform
rank was awarded to Ft. Dearborn di
vision of Chicago, and the second prize
of $100, to Lochiei dision, of Elgin.
Galesburg nivision was instituted this
evening.

gation of the Tivoli disaster, wherein
th-i lircs of sixty-five excursionists
were lost. They find a presentment
of manslaughter against Lawrey Al
bert, proprietor ol the Tivoli grounds,
and Frank De Bilens. '

Vandalia, III., Oct. 17. A passenger
train goiug cast jumped the track at
Ilagenstown, killing the fireman and
wounding the engineer. A dofeclive
spring was the cause of the accident.
No passengers injured.

Chicago, Oct. 17. Warrants were is
sued today tor the arrest of C. F. Van
Winkle and William Atkron, at the in
tinceof tbe Western Union telegraph
company, on charge of conspiracy.
The trouble dates from last May, when
the Western Union refnsed to furnish
market quotations to bucket shops,
and removed its tickers. As a consc
quence. the bucket shops have since
een working all sorts of schemes to
secure the reports, with varying1 suc
cess. For a time it was supposed they
managed to receiv the quoations by
means of signs from the board of trade
until the fact became known that they
were quotations not only us fully but
just as sent over the Western Union
wires, aud au investigation developed
the fact, as alleged, that Van Winkle
and Alkorn had tapped the Western
Union wire a the Uni n stock yards
a id run a bianth w.re into a small

to all the bucket hop. Van Winkle
was held in $1,000 bail until the 23d
for examination. Alkorn hs9 not yet

' FATAL EXPLOSIOX.
Okaloosa, la., Oct. 17. Last evening
a central Iowa freight train on the
ttack four miles north of this citr, tbe
boiler of the engine exploded, causing
a bad wreck, nineteen cars bcinft piled
tip in a space ol 140 feet. The engin
eer, Edward Uagley, was instantly
killed. The fiireman, Charles Brunem-
an, and Elnitr Blanchard, were proba
bly fatally injured. The boiler was
Ci'rried forward 150 feet, and the wreck
piled up ihir'y feet in height.

at Wolf, who was hanging about the
place, but the ball missed him. Her
husband took the revoluer, and follow
ing Wolf, shooting him in the head

hit will cause death.
