fellow Townsman. J. S. Shannon, writ
ion to his brother John shows that Mr.
Shannon haj lost none of his taste for
quiet humor, aud that. he has formed a
definite opinion of that portion of Cen
tral America in which his mining em
ployers here sent him, especially if the
inhabitants of Honduras.

things whereof you will make inquiry.
I find this Country pretty healthy con
sidering the latitude; there is very little
sickness since I came here. There is
some gold here, but I dont think these
mines will pay fur the working, there
are a great many other mines and I
think some of them may be good, but
I have not yet seen any that I would
consider good.
The inhabitants here live principally
on rice and corn cakes; they are a mix
ed race of Indians, Negroes, and Span
ish and . about as worthless as our
American Indians. They are friendly,
but have no honor or credit; they are
too lazy to steal.
The government is a Republic; they
say modeled atler the constitution oi
the United States. It resembles our
United States as much as a mule re
sembles Mary's little lamb. It is call
ed Spanish Honduras. The climate is
not as warm as I supposed when I came
here; but it is warm enough; this is
winter here now; the thermometer
indicates at 6. a. m. 78 to 84 degrees,
at 1 p. m. 84 to 90 degrees of heat: the
nights arc cool and pleasant one can
sleep comfortably under a heavy blank
et. There are poisinous insects' here
such as Spiders, Centipedes, Madacola
vra, and venomous Snakes; there are a
few boa-constrictors; but they are very
6hy. Fish are small and 6carce and of a
very poor quality,; plenty of small al
ligators, - armadilloes, tigers, punds,
with a few rabbits, and deer, plaaota,
mountain cow, wild hogs, and other
animals, but no elephants, lious or
grasshoppers, and very lew fleas.
It is a timbered country, thick with
vines and underbrush, the large trees
are scattering, and are tbe resort of his
ordship, the monkey. Tho soil is a
black loam and very fertile; corn, cot
ton, coffee, chockolate, sugar, rice, ban
anas, plantain, and pine apples, are the
staple products, produced with a very
small amount of labor. Plenty of hor
ses, mules, goats, sheep-and hogs, but
of a yery inferior grade. Plenty of
chickens, ducks, turkeys, of very fair
quality ; the most inferior and worth-
ess of all are the natives they are not
worth killing; most all ether animals
are.
State's Attorney.
An Evening's Enjoyment. As eve
ryone expected, the Academy of Music
was crowded and overflowing last night,
drawn there mainly to see John Dillon
as "I'iljrrim Boggs," ia tho play cf
-State's Attorney." The audience was
agreeably disappointed la the fact, that
although Dillon is an old time favorite
here, his inimitable acting last night,
wreathed fresh laurels to his old time
chaplets of popularity; the other mem
bers of tho company demonstrated that.
collectively, they arc a galaxy of stars
in their various specialties. The hon
orB were about equally divided between
Mr. Dillon, as the petti fogglug, eupho
nious and effervescent attorney, and
Mis. Walters, as the sympathetic, frol
licking, good natured school uiirm,
ancj, Mr. McVeagh, as the ideal, old time
bluff representative miner, a typo ol
men rapidly disappearing from the real
stage. Tho audience were kept busy
wavering and ctauging from uproari
ous laughter, to tears aud sympathy.
State's Attorney abound! in extremes
of character, which affords a pleasant
and recreative evening's enjoyment,
uh as is rarely offered the amusement
going public. Council Bluffs Nonpareil.
Tho Extension of the Telephones.
Mr. Flemou Drake, general manager
of the Nebraska Telephone company,
has returned from'a trip over this state
and Western Iowa to close up the con
struction for the year, the line- between
Fremont and Columbus, which is to be
built in Ncveiriber, only excepted.
Since the first of August tho eompa
nv have done a vast deal of work.
They have up a second wire between
Omaha and Lincoln; built a line from
Ashland to Wahoo; aline from Lin
coln to Seward taking in Milford; a
line from Lincoln to Crete ana Wilbur;
and best of all, a line from Lincoln to
W ymore. This line is fifty-four miles
long, constructed of No. 6 wire with
thirty-five poles to the mile, forming the
strongest; line in the west. Over this
wire connection is as easy as between
the Herald and the Omaha central of
fice, the large gauge of the wire insur
ing great distinctness.
In Iowa the company has built from
Coucil Bluffs to Avoca, a distance of
forty miles.
The Nebraska company has now al
together 420 miles of lines connecting
different cities and towns in this state
and in Iowa. They now afford com
munication via Plattsmouth and Glen
wood with Red Oak and Atlantic ana
propose to open a line through to Des
Moines in December. Except under
the most favorable conditions it will be
impracticable to telephone through
from Omaha to Des Moines, but the
messages will be repeated at Atlantic.
It would be possible by building a line
through from Omaha to Des Moines
without intermediate stations to speak-
directly, but such a line would not pay.
Omaha Is now connected witn asys
tern embracing Lincoln, Plattsmouth,
Blair, Arlington, Fremont, ilk
horn City, Papilliou, Springfield, Lou
isville. Soutn liend, Asniana, wanoo,
Greenwood, Waverly, Milford, Seward,
Crete. Beatrice, Blue Springs, in Ne
braska; aud Council Bluffs, Weston,
Underwood, Neola, Minden, Avoca, Pa
cific Junction. Glcnwood, Malvern, Em
erson. Red Oak, Atlantic, Griswold,
Hastings. Hillsdale, Malvern, in Iowa.
All of these except to Avoca, and the
towns named after it, which belong to
the Iowa union Telephone company,
are built and controlled by the Nebras
