The B- Sl M. Band's Excursion to
Denver and the Rockies.
CO.NCLUDED.
As mentioned in my previous letter,
the last day of our visit was devoted
to a trip up the mountains, to George
town, and this was by fur the most in
teresting part of our trip occurring
on Sunday, the lCtti iuit.
During the summer mouths excur
sion trains leave Denver every .Sunday
over both the D. fc K. ii. and Colorado
Central roads, the former detiued
southward for Colorado Spriug, Mnui-
tou, Pueblo, etc., aud the latter through
the niouutains westward for Idaho
Springs aud Georgetown. We chose
this route, as it promised to afford us
greater scope of scenery and a brucing
mountain breezo. The readers of the
II KitAt.D will probably censure us fur
our seomiug violation of tho Lord's
duy in the pursuit of pleasure; but al
low me to assert that perhaps a day
could not have been much better spent
by a novice in the realistic beauties of
nature, than by witnessing the great
works of the Creator displayed on ull
aides iu that far-famed country, and
evidently praising the great author of
all the wonders. To each and all of us
it seemed nothing less than a holy Sab
bath, and the repeated ejaculations of
wonder, as we passed upward through
the mo intains, gave evidence of the
sincerity of our feelings.
A long train of cars left Denver at
8 a. m., consisting mostly of observa
tion cars, especially adapted to facili
tate sight seeing, over a narrow gauge
track, behind on of the peculiarly
built engines of bucIi roads. Nothing
of particular interest occurred as we
parsed over the vast plain between
Denver and the foot-hills of t be ltocky
mountain, until we reached G !deu.
uoted for its great smelting work, and
beautifully situated at the base of the
mountains, immediately west of the
oot hills. Here another engine was at
:hed to the rear end of the train, and
'V we thundered to the mouth of
C ar Creek canon, where wc nntprpil
the mountain, and commenchd "snak
ing" upward .toward the summit. I
use the word "snaking' advisedly, for
such another twisting ot the road bed
between the mountain sides is seldom
seen, bometime on one aud then on
i he other side of the rapidly rolling
stream, now and then around the harp
ssi of curves, up, up, we go, along the
clearest of streams, the mountain sides
lowering high above us on either hand,
with the occipital boneof our cranium
constantly resting on the spinal verte-
Ime, and wondering why that heavy
mass of solid rock does not come
thundering down into the narrow vallev
ielow. We see an eudless array of
great boulders, piled up promiscuously
on either side, and in such variety of
shapes as to give the beholder the idea
that some great eruption of nature had
atone time upheaved this ponderous i
mass and left it iu the pell-mell condi
tion n now presents to view. Then
again we wonder at the awe inspiring
sight of "Mother Grundy," a place
where a vast amount of rock had to be
cut away to make room for the road
bed, leaving the mountain side very
nearly prrpeudicular, and high up in
the sky, overhanging the track below,
the curiously formed picture of a face
belonging to that class of females,
clearly defines itself against the azure
blue beyond. Again we gaze upon the
mountain firs, stunted cedars, and here
and there Ihe patches of shrubbery,
seemingly growing out ol" and shooting
up through the fissures of those im
mense boulders, and wondering what
cau-es theia to grow. In fact, it is a
succession ot wonders, aud we almost
wished the trip would never end.
Beaver Brooa, a small wayside statiofT
but picturesquely situated, was passed,
and wc retched Idaho Springs, a town
of no mean pretensions as to size, cosily
situated between the mountain sides, in
a neat plain of some dimensions. Here
many of the excursionists left the train
to spend the hours until return time, in
that interesting locality, and leaving us
to pursue our way ouwird and up
ward.
Georgetown was reached at 12:30 p.
m., and now for more sights and more
wonderments. After hastily satisfy
ing the inner man, we formed ourselves
into squads, each squad taking a differ
cm route, ana maKing tne most ot tne-
intervening hours, until return time.
One party took the road to Green Lake
and the Garden of the Gods, another
the mountaiu path toward Silver Plume
aud the other ascended the mountain
sides toward tho south of Georgetown
Probably the finest trip was had by
the party that visited Groen Lake, sev
enjl lhoU3and feet above Georgetown,
and the regie u of everlasting snow.
Its distance from the latter place is
about four miles, and is reached by a
steep and narrow road. The trip can
be made by hack, holding six passen
gers, and drawn by four stout horses.
and although our party preferred to
take the journey afoot, and started at
the same time the hack did, they reacn
ed the lake one half hour in advance,
all owing to the steepness of the asc? nt.
It was also probably owing partially to
the unusual exertion and aain to the
rarity of the atmosphere, that one of
the party came very near succumbing
after reaching treir destination, but,
thanks to the presence of that cooling
element, waf speedily revived by a vig
orous application of snow, which was
still to be found in many places though
in a melting form.
Green Lake, the resort of so many
YiaitofB, i a reJnarltabl ahec of wat-
cr, as clear as a crystal, 'every fbject
being plainly visible at a depth of 2ft
feet or more, assuming towards thi
middle a bottle green apect, indicating
great depth. The Garden of the Gods,
in which this lake is situated, present
many peculiar features, not the least
being the interesting small mounds of
rocks studded here and there over the
plain, and the small patches of snow in
the declivities of the earth.
The second party ascended the moun
tain road north of Georgetown, also on
toot, and though not reaching so high
an altitude, they haJ, nevertheless, an
equally interesting trip. When about
yOO feet up, we took a view of that
city, far do wn below our feet and then
could notice, how compactly it is built.
presenting a dense mass of buildings,
many of them substantial structures,
narrow streets, aud seemingly every
inch of urouud built over that could be
made available for that purpose. Fur
ther on we we noticed one of the pecu
liar railroad engineering feats so much
iu vogue among the mountaiu routes.
namely that of a road doubling itself.
This is an extension of ho Colorado
Central, westward from Georgetown,
and as yet unfinished. The route leis
along the south side of the creek, ruu-
ning westward up the grade for a dis
tance of half a mile wheu it crosses the
north side of the creek, running cast
ward the same distance, where it cros
ses again to the sjutli side over a high
bridge, many feet over its own track
below, and then passing along the south
side, westwardly.
Near by we visited the Lebanon mine
owned by a Xew York compauy, and
classed as the best paying silver mine
in that part of the county. This mine
has been explored in a straight line for
a distance of 3,231 feet, and has four
side tuuuels. Lighting a candle, which
was kindly furnished us, we gtoped
our way into tho darkness beyond, lor
a distance of about 1,400 K-et, until
rcachiug a side tunnel, where work was
in progress, proceeded to look for
the precious ore, aud succeeded in se
curing several saiall samples.
The time drawiug nigh for our de
nurture we hastily retraced our steps
towards the outer worid, and reached
Georgetown in due time for 'he return
train, reaching Denver at 8 p. in., and
giving us ample time to get ready for
our return home over the 1. & M.
Throughout our viit we were blessed
with the most delightful weather, and
consequently were in the happiest of
m ods. Trae w r , dufty and weary
wc- reached home on the following eve
ning; but that trip will never be ef
fucad from our memories. S.
