petetive Knights Templar drill occur
red this afternoon at Bay District park.
Long beiore tlie beginning of the ex

utmost and 1,000 were in the enclosure
below. Only three commandeiics com
peted, the Rapiers, of Indianapolis,
DeMolay, ot Louisville, and Bernards,
of Chicago. Each drilled with twenty
seven men, except the St. Bernards who
only drilled tweutA-fivor "Forty min
utes times was allowed for eech drill.
The Pacific coast commaudery refrain
ed from competiug, preferring that the
prizes should be won'pv, Eustern Sir
Knights, whom they regard 'as their
guestd. There were five prizes in all
varying in value from S4.000 to $5,000
The rule was made by the biennial
commission that the prizes should be
come the absolute property of tbs win
ners, and not be subject to further com
petition. There wre three judges, all
officers of the United States army. The
tactics constituted sword exercises,
military evolutions, and templar move
ment. The first to appear in the list
were Ui Kapier, of Indianapolis, the
privilege of the last drill being conced
ed to the St. Bernards, of Chicago. At
12 o'clock sharp they advanced, accom
panied by the band of the First United
States cavalry, and filing icto line, gave
the salute. This was the signal fer a
-reat burst of cheerins in which the
two commanderies heaitily joined.
Their drill was excellently perfermed.
The Rapiers were followed by the De
Molays, who as they marched in stately
column to the front of the judge's
stand led by the Eightieth United
States infantry band, were received
with great cheers. After them came
the St. Bernard's with Lyon & Healey's
Chicago band. They were greeted by
a continuous burst of applause. Their
salute to the judges was the signal for
renewed cheering, which was kept up
until they began their exercires. The
urill finally ended by the awarding
of the first prize to the De Molays, sec
ond to the Rapiers, and third to the St.
Bernards.

Upper Geiser Basin, Yellowstone

ston, M. T., August 20. At 1 o'clock
today after a dusty. marcL of 27 miles
over a rough trail, the president and
party arrived in the Upper tteiser Basin
of the National park, and went into
camp near the old taithful geiser, who
greeted us a few moments after dis
mounting, with one of his hourly erup
lions. All ot us were very . tired aud
hungry, and the exhibition, that seen.ed
gpeciaily to greet the chief magistrate,
could induce but few of our number to
abandon their lunches and rush to a
point for observing the display. The
afternoon was devoted to resting, bath
irig and overhauling our outfit, and but
little attention was paid to geisers, be
yond those in the immediate vicinity
of our camp. All are impressed with
the wonders that surround us. Tomor
row will no doubt prove a day of inter
est and pleasure. Of the curious freaks
that nature exhibits in this section, I
shall say nothing; the whole park and
all it contains has been often described
and I would not undertake to write up
that which has been so well pictured
bv others. After our ride on horse
back every member of the expedition n
in the best of health, and not an acci
dent of the slightest character has oc
curred on the w!r1c journey to mar
our phwnre. -

in this morning for fire- in a two-story
tenement house. No. Tacher'a court,
occupied by. eight families. The fire
spread with frightful rapidity. - Bo
fore the inmates could be takeu out,
four were" sniothered, and one fatally
injured by jumping from the building.

The killed are George and Thomas Mc
Laughlin, aged 14 and 11 respectively;
Mrs. Fred. Savage, aged 40, ana ivauo
aid Mamie Savage, aged 14 and o
months respectively. The cries for help
from the persons, imprisoned amid the
fUmes wero heartrending, but people
ou the street could do nothing towards
saving them. The flames were sub
dued in less than half an hour. John
Savage, first to discover the fire, gave
the alarm and jumped to the ground,
a distance of 30 feet. He had one leg
bAdly hurt. John McLaughlin, awaken
ed by lhe cries of Savage, saved his
wife and girls and two of his boys, Wil
lie and James. In his second attempt
to return, he was driven back by the
flames. Little George . McLaughlin

spread in the street below and he was
told by his fother to jump into his arms.
The boy bravely jumped, missed the

fore she could be secured that sue is not

doubtedly started in Savage's apart
ments. It is believed to have been a
kerosene lamp which one of the broth
ers threw on the other. It is also b
lieved that John Mcintosh had a hand
in causing the fire. John Flynn, who
slept in the room directly adjoining
the Savages, overheard some one crying
out '-lor God's sake don't throw that
lamp." Mcintosh and the two Savages
were arrested tbis evening, and held to
await developments.
A GOVERNOR IN TROUBLE.
Chicago, August 26. The papers here
have published in advance of its filing
a bill in chancery against Josiah W.
Begole, governor of V'chian, charg
ing him with malfeasance in the man
agement of the estate of his deceased
son, Frank C Begole. The son died in
Florida in 1873, and the bill asserts
that under duress he deeded to his
father 1.000 acres of Wisconsin land. It
is also declared that the governor paid
to the window of the deceased only
4.300 of the $3,000 insurance on the
life of the deceased, and that he lias
never made an accounting as trustee
and guardian. The bill is to be filed
oa behalf of the ini.mi irraiidson of the
governor.
