Jt'DOE IIoADLEY's "key note'
speech, delivered at Hamilton, Ohio,
the other evening, proved to be a sorry
affair.
His arraignment of the republican
party was especially unfortunate tor a
man of his past record and affiliations.
Like all young, zealous, political con- j
verts, he seems to forget th9 day? when
he Was a member of that part v. himself ;
his attack upon it on .u-r-oiiiit of the
"whiskey frauds.' tin- " r-t-.r rottto'
scandals," the ' riv -f an 1 harbor appro
priation?," and the tanfV 1-islation,
exhibit his ignorance of the crttrrent
events of the dny, as these questions
aroe, and were disposed of, and also
his utter disregard for the position
the Democratic party occupied to
each of these events in our political
history, both in Congress and out of it.
It is true whi?key frauds existed,
which had their inception under the
true blue Democratic rule of Andy
Johnson; yet they were discovered, ex
: posed, and completely crushed out un-
der Republican rule. Judge Iloadlcy
doubtless remembers Grant's famous or
der, "Let no guilty man escape'
Yet he is a demagogue, and being a
demagogue, he presumes upon the ig
norance of the masses. As to the star
j route frauds, this teacher uf the peo
) pte should remember ihaLJhe smoke of
the conflict ha3 not yet cleared away
i from the atmosphere, caused by this
i republican party pro.rnitiaif the men
j charged with having hid a hand in
; these- frauds, and that ii;e person or
; standing cf no man has '-v.i respected

FACTS.
To our democratic friends vh 1 are
hunting for arguments in favor of a
change, we desire to submit a few plain
statistics. They would naturally raise
the cpuestion, Could democracy have
done better? The close of the fiscal
year shows that during the year 1883 3
our public debt was reduced almost
$138,000 000, and that during the month
of June, when the revenues are . nol
specially large, the reduction amounted
to over $18,000,000, the largest in any
one month under the existing system of
taxation. In August, 1863, the bonded
debt of the United States was $3,381,
530, 304, of which $l,281,736,o30 bore
0 per cent; 8;50,000,000 7 per ;cent, and
A-'OO 1 7.1. 7 7 5 ner cent interest, the
leeinan j total interest charge being $1.10,877,697.
onV'""" i debt statement issued June 30th,
jc, reiorieu me uouueu ueui 01 iub
government to be $1,438,220,150, of
which $22,082,600 bears per cent,
$304,204,350 3 per cent, $250,000,000
4i per cent and $073,580,300, 4 per
cent interest. That is, all the rates of
interest are now Irom 2 to 4 per cent
less than they were in 1865. Now the
interest charge on the public , debt is
$01,430,709. i,In other words, the - 4n
terest-bearing debt Das been reduced
1,043,301,144 during the past eighteen
years, and the interest change almost
$10,000,00. Our English free trading
friends-can also see in the Ogures an
excellent lesson. When England can
show a like diminution of her enormous
public debt, it will be time enough for
her eminent statesmen to set them
selves up as models for American fol
lowing. Inter Ocean,

OUR CEMETERY.
The Herald must again call atten

for it. The blue gras is becoming

Dennis Kearney has no notion of
pooling issues with farmers. His "phi
losophy" extends to the wage class
only. Following the logic of his po

reaches New York he may not find
