The Plattsmouth & Southwestern
railroad is progressing as favorably as
couKl be wished. The organization is
perfected in the many details neccssa
ry to place a corporation of that mag
nitude on a proper footing, and very
shortly the people along the proposed
route of this road will be interviewed
and consulted in regard to right of
way, and aid in const ruction of the
same. Of the many projfirted roads in
Nebraska, at the pic iit Jay, Una one
is the most practical aiiJ feasible; the
stockholders and director mean busi
ness, and the Herald hazards the pre
diction that the road will be built
much to the surprise of those who have
in their opposition to this aid other
proposed roads, which the people are
asking for in Nebraska, 9aid "we have
i enough of railroads in this section of
the state."
l$y yesterday's despatches the news
is heralded the yeomanry of Nebraska,
that Postmaster Hall has been suspend
cd as post master at Omaha, and lion.
Chas. K. Coutant appointed in his
stead. The despatch seemed to indi
cate that Mr. nail had been suspended
for cause; if this is so, of. course it is
the duty of all fair men to withold
judgment until the cause of the remov
al is made pub'ic. If, however, the re
moval is made simply to give some
other fellow a place, in order to remun
erate him for services tendered, it can
not be censured too severely.

which nothing can be said so far as Mr.
Coutant is personally concerned, and
we might add, a decided improvement
upon some other Federal appointments
which could be very t asuly namoJ.
It mav be that our Nebraska delea
tion is simply keeping its hard iu on
these offices, until Congress meets when
it will embark in that wider aud grand
er field called statesmanship.
THE ASIATIC CHOLERA.
The. dread plague, Asiatic cholera, is
prevailing to an alarming extent in
Egypt.' The "disease first made its ap
pearance at Damietta, at the eastern
racuth of the Nile, where it has proved
very fatal, the Inhabitants dying by
the hundreds; at other points it has
broken out in its most malignant form,
and Europe has become thoroughly
alarmed over the manner in which it is
spreading; especially in the neighbor
hood of the Suez Canal, where with
the great flow of traffic it is almost
certain to spread and find its way into
"Europe.
The arrival, the other day, of a ves
sel at Havre, from Bombay, with chol
era on board, is evidence that too great
precautions cannot be taken to prevent
its spread throughout Europe; should
it be permitted to gain a foothold there
the result will be, trade snd commerce
will have to cease by the way of the
Suez Canal and the Ited Sea. This
would effect the entire commercial cir
cles of the Old World and possibly of
! this country which would be
i a great calamity,, indeed. Speaking of
the imminent danger of a general visi
tation to Europe, and this country, of
this scourge, the Interior says:
"The present visitation of cholera
follows in due course the reat Kumbh
mela of last year at Allahabad, the
horrors of wh'utli were graphically de
scribed in the Interior of April 26. It
was first noticed in August last in the
Sooloo Islands, southeast of China,
where 20,000 people perished before its
ravages were stayed. From thence it
was carried north to Luzon, in tie
PhiUipiue group. The fatality there
was fearful, no less than 4 ,500 falling
victims to the plague in Manilla alone.
Later on it spread still further north,
appearing- in Japan and some of the
Chinese ports. During the winter it
made little progress, but in May it ap
peared at liombar, on its westward
jouruey to Mecca, and thence to the
Mediterranean. An international quar
antine was established against it at
Suez, at the southern end of the canal,
but it seems to have been feebly admin
istered, and the probabilities liow are
haf no precaution will avail to prevent
its spread. In cur own land the ap
pearance of cholera has been well de
nned in its perlodicit v. It came in
1819, in 1831, 1843, 1803-5, 186.5-7
There was no outbreak throughout the
world in tbe next twelfth period in
1877-9, but there is nothing in the his
tory of the disease which precludes the
possibility of a visitation duriug tlie
present er the coming year.

markable for its vigorous blackguard
utterances and homely truths in regard

styled, so-called, National Anti-organization.
Dennis toUt his auditors that
he and his colleague Maybell, were "the
only elected delegates to the concern-"
That " but a third of the States were
represented, and onc-holf of that third
by non-residents." Said he, " we
"found. a concern styling itself Na
" tional Anti-monopoly, with more than
"half the delegates from Chicago appoint
ed by themselves." Further describing
this Convention, which had refused
him " a seat, Dennis said, they were
nothing more nor less than a lot of
" free trade, free rum, free love, black
' mailing, hatchet-faced cranks, and
" profit-mongingdues, who knew as
" much about the labor question as a
hen knew about heavftQ."
From all accounts the members com
posing this Anti mopoly f'ouvention
were, with a very few exception, chea'
and frauds upon the concern.
The corn crop throughout Cass coun
ty has made wonderful strides during
the past tvo weeks, and the weeds have
received a very black eye at the hands
of our Cass county yeomanry. Our
farmers did not plant the "little yaller,"
it is great, stalwart, blue blooded corn,
apparently in full harmony with our
proliflc soil. Cass county can be safely
put down for its usual mammoth coru
crop, and of this, chronic grumblers
want tr take due notice.
