rell. ex-grand treasurer of the grand
lodge of .Masons of Illinois, convicted
at Carliuyille, Friday, of embezzling
the funds of that body, was arrested
hero last night as a fugitive from jus
tice. The arrest was made on the
strength of a telegram from the
SDrinsfficld authorities5. He is under
bail ponding a motion for a new trial
but as two more iudictmenis covering
other than that embodied iu that on
which he was convicted, it was
thought he uieuit to forfeit bail. He
is held pending t he arrival of Spring
field o Hirer.

Denvkk, Col. March 25. The llcr
rnano peniteut'is a t"ai:; ic religious sect,
cumbering about 2.000 in the territory
of 2s ew Mexico, who bi heve in periodic
al atonement of win by inflicting on the
body agonizing tortures. They inhabit
principally but four counties in the ter
ritory. Great cure is taken to prevent
discovery of their identity by .spectators
and all are masked while conducting the
annual penance. A body of the penants
reside at Los (Jriegos, a iinall Mexican
village near AllK-rpieniue. Friday
morning the cci eniouies were inaugurated
by introducing a procession containing
about thirty men and women. The pro
cession of puriheation by torture began
at 10 o'clock. Five men, naked to the
waist, barefooted and wearing black
hoods to conceal their identity, were
seen to issue from an adobe lodge house
of the sect, led by the master of cere
monies carrying a veritable cat o"-niu
tails. Two huge wooden crosses, weigh
ing two hundred and fifty pounds each,
were placed on the.naked shoulders of
tho two self torturers, the feharp edges
cutting into the naked flesh, causing the
blood to spurt and drop to the ground.
One penitent produced a bharp goad,
which he thrust into the flesh of fellow
sufferers from time to time while the
procession moved up the street, to a wild
gibberish chant in Spanish. Halting
once, the crosses were transferred to
others' shoulders, the . attendants apply
ing the rawhide whips niercilesgy, each
blow taking off the skin and bits of
flesh. The procession took its way to a
gool half mile away. During the march
not a grcan was heard or a word spoken,
but just before reaching the goal, a small
adobe hut the ordeal encountered tried
the nerves of the boldest. For some
distance before the door cactus had been
strewn thickly to the ground, and as th
barefooted cross bearers approached it
one hesitated. In&tantly a half dozen
whips descended oa his bare thoul Jcrs
and with a bound he leaped into the
cacti. His eyery step and that of his
followers was marked with blood. As
the torture crew more terrible the chant
grew louder, and the laches 1V11 with

erful men submitted their bodies to be
most mercileesy flogged, until in some
instauci s the bare muscle had been seen
covering every blow. The whole pro-
cce lings were a Ravage attempt to hon
or the master season. Hitherto the men
made no attempt to check tho wild ex
ercises, although one pofiitent, who threw
another hearing a cro into the river
near Kan Juan and drowned hiui, wns
lynched by infuriated witnesses.

aha dispatch says: Hon. T. O. Howe,
postmaster general, died at 2:20 this
afternoon at the residence of his
nephew, Col. Jas. II. IIowc. He con
tracted a severe cold a week ago at
Green Ilay, returned to Kenosha and
was very ill Saturdaj', when he seem
ed to improve. Plivsiciaus pro
nounced it pneumonia. He wa tak
en woisC Saturday night and sank
rapidly, passing away peacefully this
atiernoun.
THE FATAL ILLNESS.
Howe s illness was the result ol a
aevere cold contracted by walking
half a mile thioiiirli a bad storm at
Green I Jay last Saturday, which, on
his arrival at Kenosha on Monday,
developed into pneumonia. Dr. Ish-
am, of Chicago, was called in, and
uudcr his care he improved, but last
evening a change lor the worse en
sued, and absent members of the
iamiiy were sent for, his daughter
arrived from Vushiogtoii at 11
o clock, up to Mial hour lie was
conscious, but his mind after that
wandered, and at 2:20 p. in. lie pass
ed away without a struggle.
Ihc funeral will take place at
Green llay but no arrangements have
yet been made.

president received this evening, tele
graphic information of the sudden
death this afternoon, at his home in
Wisconsin, of Postmaster General
Howe. In consequence of this sad
unexpected event, the dinner which
was to have been given T-utisday by
the president to cx-Prcsident Diaz
and company, who aie to . arrive in
Washington Monday, as the guests
of the nation, will not take place.
The reception to have been given to
the same distinguished guests by
Secretary Frelinglitiysen Wednesday
will not take place.

tary Folder's physician reports at a
late hour tonight that the condition
of his patient is improved. It is
true that the secretary is suffering
from erysipelas in the face and head,
hrottirlit cm by a severe cold. The
disease is aggravated by tho lowered
vitality and impoverished condition
of the blood, due to overwork and
want of proper nutrition ; but it is
not thought there is as yet any rea
son for especial apprehension.
