ent who reached Helena yesterday
from Memphis gives the following
view of the situation: Along the liv
er banks there are not more than two
or three spots ; of dry land between
Memphis and the Point, and scores of
the best farmers in Arkanas and Mis
sissippi are in u, complete s atn oi
wreck. Most, of tliem are abandoned,
the owners and laborers having lied to
higher ground. In many places cattle
in the watar. Almost every gin house
is filled with colored people. At the
landing eighteen 'colored women in
boats were moored to a tree, waiting
for steamers to take them away. There
is not a foot of dry land in forty miles.
Boats ladened with colored people and
their goods were seen at various points
seeking for ground to rest ou. . At
Sterling, colored people, horses andjeat
tle were indiscriminately huddled in
the upper stories, of the only store
there. Fences and houses along the
river bank are still intact more or less!
though many of them have been lloat
ed away. At Star landing dwellings
are full of cattle, aud gin houses full
of negroes. The piospecLs are eeituiu
ly favorrble for a big rise below ht;i-,
as the flow of water from the St. Fran
cis river is undiminished. Capt. Ttior
