Kansas, looking hale nnd hearty.
They report quails plentiful but a

The I). & M. road received during
the past week W.ItO'J pounds of
merchandise; also nineteen full
carloads of material. There has

small lots; ten full carloads.
Kearney is making a bid for a
glove factory and proposes to send
delegates to Glovesville, N. Y., for
the purpose of inducing several of
the hundred factories there to
locate in the west. There is little
doubt that Kearney will succeed, as
the signs of the times indicate that
the capitalist are becoming
interested in the west.
An announcement appeared in
thin paper last week to the effect
that a change in the ownership of
Thk Hkkald was contemplated,
and in view of the fact that subse
quent development have altered
the original plans materially, wc
deem it expedient to state that TllK
llEKALD will continue to be issued
by its present management. The
office, already acknowledged to be
the best equipped establishment in
the county, will be replenished by
the addition of $200 worth of the
latest styles of type and other
necespurv appliances, which, un
questionably, will render our facili
ties for doing all kinds of printing
work unsurpassed by any office in
the county. It is our intention to
k?ep Thk Hekat.d in the front
ranks as a local paper, and to the
end that our desires may be fully
realized, we earnestly and confi

We npptTciaie the ahilitj of Mr.

with regret that the originally con

been consummated. For his
gentlemanly demeanor he has
made many friends during his

ever vocation he may choose to
follow, the best winhes of all will
follow him.

Painfully Injured.
C. A. Stevens, an employee of the
shops, met with a painful accident
last Saturday evening. He was
doingchisel work striking forcibly
with heavy hammer and .unfortun
ately just as the hammer was about
to land on the chisel he missed his
aim and dealt an exceptionally
heavy blow upon his left hand,
crushing it and rendering it to say
the least, very painful. It is prob
able that he will be laid oil lor a
period of several weeks.
It is unfortunate that Mr. Stevens
did not avail himself of the oppor
tunity of taking out accident in
siirance, n plan recently adopted
bp the B. A M., thereby, instead of
losing his time in this period of
misfortune, lie would be drawing a
fairly good salary.

Tho rejmrts of tin- d cnimont
aualy.sis, as made jmblii: from time
to time in the official reports, form
useful subjects for study. A great
deal of attention is devoU-d to the
examination of baking powders,
nmlvery properly so, for they are
articles of general use.and many of
them being so grossly adulterated
all po-isible information should be
given to enable consumers to dis
tinguish between the good and the
bad.
A large number of these article
have boon analyzed, Ihe samples
being collected from do, tiers in all
secti.ms. Tlv; impurities found
were principally nluui and lime,
both inwholesiiiiie. The nluui is
used I.) place of rro.im of t.lil-ir
because of its low cost. lime,
both tartrate, and luilphaie Mriug
found, was present from the u.-e i f
improperly refined cream of tar
tar. The analysis found nnd reported
the Roval Hakimr Powder to be
pure, tree trout lime, nluui and
phosphatio acid, and of high
leavening Ktrength. A complete
analysis would undoubtedly have
shown no baking powder except
the Royal entirely free from sonic
one of those objectionable ingre
dients. This, we presume, ac
counts for the lack of leavening
powder in the other powders, in
sometimes complained of by the
cook, nnd the bitter taste found in
the biscuits no frequently coni-
plained of by ourselves.
T,e i-i-asons for the chemical
purity of the Royal Jinking Powder
were recently given in the New
VorkTiine, in an interesting den-
cription of a new method for rcfin-
ing nrgols, or crude cream of tartar.
u seems that it is only under this
process that crearn of tartar can be
freed from the lime natural to it
and rendered chemically pure; that
the patents and plant for this cost
the Royal Unking Powder Company
about half a million dollars, nnd
that they maintain exclusive con
trol of the rights.
This official recognition of the
purity mid value of the Royal Dak-
h,ig Powder by the Government will
mj t Hie already wide popularity
of that urticle, and deservedly so.
